Why do car stereos sound better than home systems?

Many people believe the systems in their automobiles outperform those in their homes and, for some, that is likely true. But why? Have a question you want to ask Paul? http://www.psaudio.com/ask-paul/

I am getting close to publishing my memoir! It’s called 99% True and it is chock full of adventures, debauchery, struggles, heartwarming stories, triumphs and failures, great belly laughs, and a peek inside the high-end audio industry you’ve never known before.

I plan a few surprises for early adopters, so go to https://www.paulmcgowan.com and add your name to the list of interested readers. There’s an entire gallery of never before seen photos too.

WHAT WORLD ARE YOU FROM ? Car stereos sound like shit, I have no clue what the fuck you are listening to, are you riding in the back of a Rolls Royce ?

  3. bryant ramirez on November 30, 2020 at 7:39 pm

A better answer to this question is; it is less expensive to have a good audio system in a car than it is to have a good system in a living room, I think we have to keep sq footage in mind. Just like a good set of headphones would sound better than most car systems, because it is less expensive to have. But inside of a room, you have much more possibilities but would be more expensive to build

  4. PrestoTechReviews on November 30, 2020 at 7:40 pm

I used to like tesla car systems, until I became more of an audiophile and realized they had WAY too much bass, and its kind of muddy.

  5. Justin Laing on November 30, 2020 at 7:41 pm

Because the speaker size and position is suited to the cars cabin..your home stereo has to be set up properly by you, and you need more power to accommodate the much larger area

  6. Kyaw Lin Saw on November 30, 2020 at 7:41 pm

After listening to the first 3 seconds, my answer would be : You have the wrong home system, mate.

  7. Anthony Martino on November 30, 2020 at 7:42 pm

Car stereos NEVER SOUND BETTER than home systems every time. First off glass everywhere. second you are not in a perfect stereo location. third car audio is crap "even higher end" so called car audio is not even close to what a true full range home system can do. Plus room size enhances sound if properly designed for specific amplifiers and stereo speaker location. In audio location is literally everything! top line car audio is plenty good to excellent if done well but not even close to home audio and never ever will be either.

  8. Mike Parker on November 30, 2020 at 7:45 pm

Although your Tesla might have great stock speakers, powered by a decent car stereo???? It’s not considered "high end" car stereo! Car stereo subs are twice the sub, a home stereo sub is!!! They have twice the size magnet, the cones are 2 sometimes 3 times as thick, the surrounds are way bigger thicker, the excursion is WAY more, taking 3 times the power!!! With that you have the answer to the question. After market "high end" car stereo is built for competition & spl. It’s much easier & less spendy to put together a great sounding, pounding car, & harder to duplicate that sound in your house.

  9. Ivan j on November 30, 2020 at 7:47 pm

    They dont.

  10. Snaus Pockets on November 30, 2020 at 7:47 pm

Another thing to consider is who cares about sound quality in the car when the road noise and the open windows and City driving provide so much background noise that the increase in detail from stock is nullified substantially.

I just got another JL 12" tw3 to add to my bass in the car so I do care about SQ there but I am also realistic. It is what it is. I’m really only here watching this video because the title of it made me think HUH?

  11. Dangerous Fandango on November 30, 2020 at 7:50 pm

My fosgate p3, on the performance technique 6000 sounds much better than any home audio

  12. lance kluemper on November 30, 2020 at 7:51 pm

I dont think most ppl know how good a car audio system can sound. Im sure some home audio systems sound better than my truck. But itd take a hell of a home audio system to compete. Maybe i need to get some new home audio speakers. That could change my mind.

  13. Jose Torres on November 30, 2020 at 7:54 pm

If your car audio sound almost identical the voice of the person singing listening the high frequencies then you know you have high end audio

  14. Snaus Pockets on November 30, 2020 at 7:54 pm

The entire premise of this video is wrong. My home audio way outperforms my car audio and I have Focal speakers and JL subs in it.

If your car outperforms your home it’s because you have some little Bose home audio system or something. The ceiling for home audio is much much higher.

  15. Robert Czajkowski on November 30, 2020 at 7:54 pm

    Woo-hoo, of course M. Knopfler! <3

  16. dhruv meena on November 30, 2020 at 7:54 pm

DSP is huge factor in car. Bose panaray for cadillac and corvette c8 blows many system in dust. Correcting a variable room is harder in general, but a home system can easily outperform if corrected with dsp properly

  17. CR1SP3RLOCO on November 30, 2020 at 7:54 pm

My Sony car stereo and jbl component speakers sound super clean…specially my flac files…

  18. Eleonik 76 on November 30, 2020 at 7:56 pm

Non sense. I have Technics SE-A1010 and SU-C1010 with pair of B&W CM10 speakers, I have been listening to many brands, models and years car stereos, and nothing comes even close to that setup, except perhaps the one in Lexus LS600, Mark & Levinson and Audi S8 Bang&Olufsen 1000watt monster. The secret is so, that listening space must be considered when it comes to set up.

  20. Firstname Hidden on November 30, 2020 at 7:59 pm

Car systems sound better than home systems when the idiot who owns the car system cannot hear a home system because he is deaf from abusing his hearing driving his 145 dB fart car. Surveys show that a sound system you can hear sounds better than the one you cannot.

  21. StoneWell Forever on November 30, 2020 at 8:00 pm

It can be resistance of each driver. In a car it can be lower than 4 ohms and home systems can be upwards of 6 ohms and higher

  22. ricky a on November 30, 2020 at 8:01 pm

i honestly havent come across car stereo that sound better than home stereo even competition set up. what am i missing?

  24. Erick R on November 30, 2020 at 8:02 pm

They don’t, if you think your car stereo sounds better than perhaps you should throw away your Onkyo ,LG, or Sharp Home Theater in a box and get a better stereo system.

  25. Genuine Audiophile on November 30, 2020 at 8:05 pm

“…we have succeeded in … creating a system… that… equals the world‘s best in-home HiFi systems.” – Paul Stephenson Managing Director, Naim Audio. He is referring to using Dirac DSP for Volvo, which Naim use to optimize impulse response before ever touching frequency response.

  26. Ibhenriksen on November 30, 2020 at 8:07 pm

That’s because the car speakers are calibrated just right, If you calibrate your home stereo speakers they will sound just as good as long as it’s not a cheap system.

  27. J.S. Hurst on November 30, 2020 at 8:08 pm

    So true.
Also car audio is a lot cheaper to upgrade.
I’m in the process of trying to get car audio in my house.

  28. Ti. on November 30, 2020 at 8:10 pm

Im guessing because the volume of the room which is (car) is smaller than a room in a house. I have 2 exact the same 400w woofers in 2 different rooms, 1 is very small and the other one is big. The woofer in my big room sounds decent but the woofer in my small room kicks ass and i feel the bass all over.

  29. abhimawa1 on November 30, 2020 at 8:10 pm

    Answer:
    1. Your home system is mediocre
    2. Your spouse speaks too loud and too much when you try to listen at home (and perhaps you’ve neglected the laundry)

  30. zerocapacitance1 on November 30, 2020 at 8:11 pm

Enclosed environment, speaker distance, direct voltage.

  31. shaun on November 30, 2020 at 8:12 pm

Car speakers sound a bit tony , I think he means the sound stage .
Home Hi Fi has a larger bigger sound with a better base note drop , its a bigger room .
You can open the back lid of a car & have some FUN .
Park it up in town & spread the sound , they will hear the Base for miles around LOL

  32. Delkomo on November 30, 2020 at 8:13 pm

Probably all the guy wants to say is that the price discrepancy between setting up a car vs. a home stereo system for achieving the same “sound quality” (whatever that means, although I agree with him…) is way too big.

Any advice on how to toe in a pair of Quad ESL 63s inside a 1970 Lancia Stratos?

  34. mazda2284 on November 30, 2020 at 8:16 pm

joke on all of you ! i run car audio in the home !

  35. Fredrik Svärd on November 30, 2020 at 8:16 pm

Because you buy bs home stereo products

  36. Andyw1228 on November 30, 2020 at 8:16 pm

The only thing which can and should be better is the kick bass and low bass. In you home there is normally much more air to move and to have a superior bass performance yuou have to do several cunning stunts (1 Subwoofer, 2 Subs and best is a DBA, a double bass array with time correction). Plus, in the car you have the pressure cam effect, which amplifies bass.

  37. Hungry Guy on November 30, 2020 at 8:19 pm

The "elephant in the room" with these kind of videos is that you’re not listening to the system under review… You’re listening to your computer’s speakers!

Despite that, I think the explanation is that audio engineers design the complete car high-end audio system, whereas home audio high-end enthusiasts are fixated with nonsense like tubes, and vinyl records, and magic speaker cables blessed by Jimmy Hendrix that cost $1000/inch, bleh — of course such a person’s car audio is gonna sound way better than their home system…

  38. THDS on November 30, 2020 at 8:22 pm

come on ! you know that car audio is so expensive for what it generally is ! when you drive you know there are a lot of frequency interferences and the sound becomes unnatural.

  39. Rx Tunez on November 30, 2020 at 8:23 pm

I only have heard the opposite, but anyways I watch paul probably everyday but im a car audiophile. Maybe one day I will set something up inside my home

    They never do.

  41. mark wilson on November 30, 2020 at 8:23 pm

sorry no comparison i have a car system better than any car has standard ANY and i also own bhk ps audio setup night and day ?????? i think this geezer needs new home system and his ears syringing LOL

  42. raksh9 on November 30, 2020 at 8:26 pm

Naim Audio amp and preamp, Linn Sondek turntable, Stax electrostatic ear speakers. My home system destroys my car audio.

  43. warpspeed on November 30, 2020 at 8:26 pm

    No they don’t. Period.

  44. Michael Walker on November 30, 2020 at 8:27 pm

And what would it take to produce this effect in home stereo? Just pull your car into the garage … and your home!

  45. Killa Bee on November 30, 2020 at 8:30 pm

Because your home stereo is crappy .

  46. Peter Otremba on November 30, 2020 at 8:30 pm

If I have a budget of 1000$, is it better to spend it on car or home audio for sound quality?

  47. William Su on November 30, 2020 at 8:30 pm

I’ve never really heard a good car audio system tbh it’s never really sounded very good to me

  48. Ali Mahdavi on November 30, 2020 at 8:31 pm

Let’s take this question seriously for a second. Despite all the obvious advantages a home theater has over a car stereo, let’s dive in and see what could be there that some may like better. I share my personal experience here.
First of all we got the room gain. A HUGE room gain. This makes the richest mid-bass and lower mids, especially when the car is at a stop with the engine off. I still adore this fact, and the fact that it’s not so hard to go down to 20Hz in a car. It’s super easy to shake everything in a car with just a couple 8 inchers mounted on the deck.
Second one is for the highs, I suppose. Since most of the highs reflects off the glass windshield and windows, it adds some kind of "magical" reverb to the highs. This makes the soundstage wider imho. Certainly not more "Hi-Fi" or "realistic", but more dreamy.
And of course, the third element is the adrenaline! Of course the scatman tune sounds much more catchy at 100mph😉
    .
    Here my two cents

car sounds better? news to me. I have 19 speakers in my truck, it sounds great… but not as good as a well setup home stereo
