Elden Ring Last-Gen PS4/PS4 Pro vs Xbox One/One X: Do You Really Need A Console Upgrade?

Elden Ring Last-Gen PS4/PS4 Pro vs Xbox One/One X: Do You Really Need A Console Upgrade?

Just how good – or indeed, bad – are the last-gen console versions of Elden Ring? With current-gen consoles hit by supply issues, can you still get a decent Elden Ring experience on an older console? By and large, the answer is ‘yes’, to varying degrees. With one exception.

You know, for those of us still reeling from pandemic job loss and enduring months of no pay…. the PS4 version is just fine. At least there is something to take your mind off how bleak our own world actually is.

I fucking hate the XBOX names. Am I the only one? I had to google what the damn models mean.

  3. Diego Salas on April 30, 2022 at 6:48 pm

  4. TRSH CLN 69 on April 30, 2022 at 6:48 pm

From software did the One X dirty

  5. GooeyGo on April 30, 2022 at 6:49 pm

Me an Xbox one plebian, not finding anything dire with the footage and still seeing a beautiful game

  6. Box Beat on April 30, 2022 at 6:49 pm

This game just runs better on all PlayStation console than xbox when compared last gen vs laste gen and next gen vs next gen

  7. Mitchel Kvedar on April 30, 2022 at 6:51 pm

why has everyone forgotten about the base Xbox one ? not the Xbox one s??? like day one version

  8. Justin Carson on April 30, 2022 at 6:51 pm

Here I am… Sitting in the dark of my bedroom with Elden Ring on my dresser… collecting dust… I thirst HARD for the game, but I don’t want to shame myself with experiencing it for the first time using my toaster of a console. That being, my xbox one… that’s RIGHT! My og xbox fucking ONE! JUST STOP BEING SOLD OUT SERIES X! I don’t care if it costs money to create more chips! OUR COUNTRY IS ALREADY ASS DEEP IN INFLATION! MIGHT AS WELL GO DOWN HAVING FUN WITH SOMETHING I CAN ACTUALLY FUCKING PLAY IT ON!!!!!

  9. PopPunkNerd on April 30, 2022 at 6:52 pm

So play the PS4 version on ps5? If you wanna save ps5 space

  10. John Blake on April 30, 2022 at 6:54 pm

75 hours into the ps4 version on my ps5..im getting a fixed 60fps and graphics is pretty good for a last gen game

  11. RogueSpartan 285 on April 30, 2022 at 6:54 pm

I’m calling it right here, 343, FromSoftware, and Bethesda need a new engine for their games.

  12. Captain Crunch on April 30, 2022 at 6:57 pm

    Xbox one s = trash….go with PlayStation don’t buy the series x

  13. Angelo Bitetti on April 30, 2022 at 6:57 pm

I beat the game on a old Xbox one s and I think is worth it

  14. You need a Tic Tac on April 30, 2022 at 6:58 pm

The latest 1.04 update makes the One X run much better, closer to 45-60 fps now.

  15. slay3r on April 30, 2022 at 6:59 pm

considering how read dead 2 looked and ran on base ps4, there’s pretty much no reason we can’t at least get a locked 30 fps with variable resolution

  16. Nicholas Ireland on April 30, 2022 at 7:01 pm

Dont care for getting new hardware as i dont really play games anymore but im a souls guy thru and thru so i appreciate a review for older consoles…
Tis downloading now, hope it wont suffer from bloodborne syndrome and be a messy pile of shit visually.

  17. Jas on April 30, 2022 at 7:01 pm

I don’t know why they make Xbox One X go higher then 1440p in resolution? If they kept it at 1440p with same graphics setting I bet it can hit 50 to 60fps no problem.

  18. Starlesslemon on April 30, 2022 at 7:02 pm

Why don’t you have a health bar?

  19. MrSer1a on April 30, 2022 at 7:04 pm

How do you run One X code on Series console?

  20. Geo Force on April 30, 2022 at 7:04 pm

Honestly if they only have an 1080p option for tge ps4 pro I’d buy it.

  21. Skipper The Eye Child on April 30, 2022 at 7:05 pm

The resolution on the Xbox One version gets worse as the game goes on. I’m up to the capital and the dynamic resolution is making it look like DS1 on 360. With Blighttown frame rate to boot. It is really struggling to run the game.

  22. Hoverbike on April 30, 2022 at 7:05 pm

Well at least the xboxes are Tinning smoothly.

The base PS4 runs closer to 10-15 FPS, from my experience.
The only times it touches 30, it doesn’t matter, because nothing is on screen. You’ll be fighting bosses and exploring Liurnia at sub 15 FPS, and I do NOT recommend it. PS4 Pro as a minimum.

PC is the obvious solution, but to be fair, even on it, the performance is seemingly random. Especially towards the Haligtree did I see some truly jarring stuttering on PC, however, it was also the only version of the game that would occasionally run smoothly at 60 FPS, which felt absolutely wonderful.

I wonder what kind of hardware from was using to play test. A 2060s is definitely below it.

  23. St@rLordx21 on April 30, 2022 at 7:08 pm

What is the base xbox 1. We got the old xbox 1 that was all black that came with the kinect, Then we have the Xbox1S that was all white both digital and disk versions. So if your saying base which is it because my Xbox1S looks way better than and runs smooth without any chips in anyway. I beat the game already also

  24. J. C. on April 30, 2022 at 7:08 pm

So the X-Bone X is the best choice for old last gen hardware. Playing on the Bone too, it’s reasonable. Comes nowhere close to the PS5, but it’s playable. Just a lottt of pop in.

  25. Nitish Aggarwal on April 30, 2022 at 7:09 pm

Why the eff they didn’t implemented high grass density on last gen consoles, atleast on pro and one X they could do it, lower the effing resolution to 2k Or around it and apply high settings preset

Man the grass really looks awesome on next gen with ambient occlusion combined

  26. TheSarcasticOne on April 30, 2022 at 7:09 pm

I’m on a base ps4, it definitely is functional, (I returned cyberpunk immediately that was garbage) framerate definitely not stable though, will dip alot in certain spots. But all things considered I’m glad I can still play the game since I cannot get my hands on a ps5 for the next decade.

  27. ItsJustAlex on April 30, 2022 at 7:09 pm

Fromsoft’s coding for Sony if just more of the same with Japanese dev studios half heartedly applying time and effort regarding coding optimization to platforms that are not Nintendo or Sony. if they actually cared about their fans on Xbox or PC both of those platforms should have seen much better optimization and the Xbox one x and series x should have stomped their Sony counterparts handedly in terms of in game performance with their superior hardware.

  28. jenesuispasbavard on April 30, 2022 at 7:11 pm

From Software desperately needs to outsource their non-lead-platform ports. OG Xbox One performance looks horrible, and PC is a stutter-fest.

  29. Narros Jefferson on April 30, 2022 at 7:14 pm

So if I have a ps5 I should buy the ps4 version and run in on performance mode for the highest fps?

  30. Nicane - on April 30, 2022 at 7:15 pm

jesus dont even think about farming in those consoles go travel is gonna be faster and easier lol

  31. nobody namedme on April 30, 2022 at 7:16 pm

Me personally i dont care much about graphics on my xbox one as long as i dont lag a bunch in combat with my friends. I hope this goes well

  32. MrBartman002 on April 30, 2022 at 7:17 pm

watching this on my $1300 gaming pc

  33. André on April 30, 2022 at 7:17 pm

Should I buy It If I have One S?

  34. Thrifty PS Gamer Reviews on April 30, 2022 at 7:19 pm

I play on my PS5 and I will say that the 60fps mode stuttering while riding the horse is super annoying and almost game breaking for me

  35. Veselin Ivanov on April 30, 2022 at 7:19 pm

The one x is still a pretty good console.

  36. Ask MiName on April 30, 2022 at 7:20 pm

Darn, I really dont know if I want so spend $560 (a new xbox plus game) just to play this with the best settings because I dont play much, but this game looks awesome. I I wish I played the other "soul" games to have a clue if it’s worth it.

  37. Fintan on April 30, 2022 at 7:20 pm

The game has far more demanding areas with tons of mobs and huge area of effects that tank performance on base ps4, you give it too much credit by only showing early area that is no nearly as demanding. You mention that you don’t recommend people playing on xbox as it would taint the experience, base ps4 experience for me has definitely been tainted. Im debating just not playing anymore until i get ps5 which unfortunately would not be soon. The game is just more frustrating than fun by a lot with the performance issues, when you die so many times not because you messed up but do to performance issues it starts to ruin the experience.

(Anyone who thinks i mean im frustrated because its too hard, I dont although i do have feelings about how they designed bosses but my issues could largely be due to the poor performance mainly. Ive been a huge fan since Demons Souls on PS3, i was doing sl1 runs back then before it became a big twitch game i can beat bosses)

  38. We were here on April 30, 2022 at 7:20 pm

PS4 back compat on PS5 is the absolute best way to play this on console. After playing multiple playthroughs on PS5, I’m not missing any cutbacks to foliage on PS5. Back compat method is virtually locked and it’s glorious.

  39. Nicolas l on April 30, 2022 at 7:23 pm

Why scrambling the one S again. It’s like a Serie S what expecting from something less powerful than an other…

  40. Trey2Da on April 30, 2022 at 7:24 pm

You guys have to re-do this one. Supposedly the most recent patch made some improvements. Would love to see you guys review it and confirm.

  41. TRSH CLN 69 on April 30, 2022 at 7:26 pm

The Xbox One X runs the same settings as the ps4 pro, is more powerful than the Ps4 Pro, et the game still performs best on ps4 pro. It’s so obvious that from software didn’t optimize the game for Xbox at all. It wouldn’t surprise me if until some stage in development, the game was meant to be a PlayStation exclusive

  42. Jenny Melo on April 30, 2022 at 7:27 pm

The low fps for characters in the close distance looks exactly the same on both. They both use a low fps very close to the character.

  43. MoonKnight/Real2911 on April 30, 2022 at 7:27 pm

Is there any way to test it on a base Xbox One? Not the S

  44. Brian Vasquez on April 30, 2022 at 7:29 pm

On pc it has been pretty solid! You have a good bit of settings to manually change to get the performance you want

  45. DoubleOh Dutch on April 30, 2022 at 7:31 pm

PSA I "won" a PS5 through the OWG Games channel. Until today I have paid $1000 IN SHIPPING FEES but Mr. Thomas won’t send it to me because he keeps asking for more money THREATENING ME when I refused his BLACKMAIL. Spread the word. Good, fair channels like this one deserve better.

  46. Project Pluto: Slam on April 30, 2022 at 7:32 pm

Huge souls fan here. With switching between jobs, I definitely can at least get a hold of a ps5 brand new BUT! After bills, etc. It’s still going to be roughly 2-2 1/2 months before I can buy one without having to break the bank so to say. I have a nice 60 inch tv with native HDR and using a PS4 Pro, would you say to wait it out or…? Normally, I can wait but this finally made an itch so to say and much harder to hold off.

  47. RA Babor on April 30, 2022 at 7:37 pm

I thought Xbox are more powerful?? is it one those so called not optimized game that they always say?

  48. Bloodyshinta1 on April 30, 2022 at 7:40 pm

so in the ps4 pro section he didn’t mention performance mode or supersampling mode, does digital foundry just not check those on ps4 pro anymore? seems like a pretty big omission.

  49. Exmachinagamma on April 30, 2022 at 7:41 pm

I have Elden Ring on the One X, which has a Samsung 2TB EVO internal SSD. I’ve never done a speed test when I streamed it, but I think it’s between 10-12 seconds.

  50. FenixA2Z on April 30, 2022 at 7:41 pm

FromSoftware Boss: Ok guys we got great performance at around 30+ FPS on all consoles! Ship it!
FromSoftware Engineer: But the base Xbox runs below 30fps most of the time!
FromSoftware Boss: Who cares, we put our entry level guys on that project. XD
