Can this battery also be used for the DJI Mini 2?
I got this battery as a present, but don’t know how to use it.
Thank you and great content tho

    Hi,

I have a question about charging the Dji drone’s smart battery with a standard RC charger through an XT60 adapter.
    (For example: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4799923/files).
I’m not that knowledgeable about electrical engineering, so I’d love to hear your opinion or experience on it …

The question is: is the "smart" part of the battery necessary for charging?
Or can you just ignore the data lines and let the charger do the "smart" part, namely not too fast, not overloaded, balancing, etc.?
And if so, what happens to the data recording of the battery in the Fly app?

thanks and keep up you nice videos
    Imp

Hi Mad, thanks for an informative video!
I assume most what you said is also valid for the Mini 2’s batteries?
One thing’s is particular to the Mini 2 though, if you have the Fly More combo with the 3 bay charger be aware that it doubles as a power bank and can charge stuff off your flight batteries. But do NOT leave your batteries in the charger when long term storing them since they will not then self discharge!

Thanks Mad, really helpful. Looking forward to the chargers diy video. I just don’t want to spend so much money on Fly and More combo

One of my DJI FPV batteries has discharged too low and will now not charge.
Do you know if there is a DC to XT60 adapter that will let me charge these off a normal charging board?
    Thanks!

  11. marweiUT on January 13, 2022 at 5:55 pm

Thank you for the great topic and video.

I am not quite sure about the 3 days term, when after this time the automatic discharging is triggered. I am used to fly RC helicopters, where the LiPo battery sets are also very expensive and thats why I immediately charging my all batteries to the storage level (3,6-3,85V per cell) after getting home after flying, like it is recommended by LiPo and LiOn producers. Than the lifetime is greatly improved by getting at the storage level as soon as possible (not in days, but in minutes).
I have asked my DJI dealer about the automatic discharging of DJI FPV batteries and he says, it is supposedly after 10 days for DJI FPV batteries. The mentioned 3 days are allegedly at e.g. DJI MAVIC , AIR batteries … I had no time to check it yet, but it is no problem to find it out by measuring.
Anyway, even the 3 days are very long time. If it should be 10 days, it is very bad for their lifetime. The same with charging – it should be done immediately before flying. It simply means, not to let run the chemical processses in batterries in fully charged state, when it is very strong and it shortens significantly the batteries life. And conversely, also not let them fully discharged. This little care is money saver, even it is sometimes a bit bothering.

hello ! Thank you for video! I have a situation: I’ve bought fly more kit for this drone and put it on charge with a hub. It was charged one bat after another one by one in line. But when these two were installed to the quad he said "battery software is not the right one, please update" and offered to update via Googles. The next charge they didn’t charge one after another and hub led became red as one of them charged. The next in the line was only able to be charged when I unplugged the charged one.. so the sequence was changed after update. Do you know how to fix it?

  13. al green on January 13, 2022 at 5:57 pm

Can I just add a note about cancelling the auto-discharge?
Correct me if I’m wrong; assuming the lipo cells act like traditional lipos, keeping them fully charged for an extended period of time can, and likely will, cause the battery to swell and potentially ignite. Cancelling the auto-discharge is doing exactly this, so anything over a week or so isn’t advised.
If you’re not going to be flying any time soon, just let the discharge happen and recharge when you’re ready to fly.

  14. Adam Gray on January 13, 2022 at 5:58 pm

Aren’t there any aftermarket batteries? I was going to buy the DJI FPV bundle until I saw the price of extra batteries! Rip off!

  15. Luke Stanton on January 13, 2022 at 6:01 pm

Thanks for this! I have a single battery that is stuck in ā€˜internal communication errorā€™ and will not charge or power the drone? Is this something you have seen before? Many thanks šŸ™šŸ¼

  16. Mickey McH on January 13, 2022 at 6:03 pm

I might fly my DJI Fpv once a week. I check the voltage with a meter so I have 22.8V to 23.1V total with no load before putting the batteries away. Other DJI batteries I check the cells on the app with the motors shut down. It’s not the best way to check them because the quad is still drawing some amps. I’d rather have traditional lipos with a balance plug.

This should be required viewing for anyone who purchases an DJI FPV.

I have recently brought a DJI FPV combo and the battery has been saying maintenance required since day what does this mean?

  21. Maddmavic on January 13, 2022 at 6:09 pm

I just got the fly more combo n the batteries don’t light up or seem to charge at all either one of them .are the in hibernation mode or anything I have to do

  22. Hendri Esterhuysen on January 13, 2022 at 6:10 pm

Every time you say self discharge I hear self destruct.

  23. Michele Marcucci on January 13, 2022 at 6:10 pm

I cannot understand if I can use a power bank to recharge the FPV battery. Any ideas?

  24. Byron Ramsey on January 13, 2022 at 6:10 pm

Hypothetically speaking if I were to strap an Insta360 to the bottom of the DJI FPV would the sensors detect it as an obstacle? Could it safely take of with an object hanging and potentially pivoting off the bottom?

  25. Mjbb on January 13, 2022 at 6:11 pm

  26. Erhan Simavi on January 13, 2022 at 6:12 pm

Was flying it the other day and realized the battery showing 100 percent charge after a few minutes. Figured something must be wrong, i did get a message saying battery maintenance required. Do you happen to have a video showing how exactly you perform the battery maintenance? Thanks for all the info. I fly over water a lot and it’s been a scary experience to see the battery percentage still at 100 percent after cruising it at 60 mph for a good mile.

Anyone know where the battery hack thread he posted that picture from where someone paralleled the batteries? Love to read about it.

  30. Artem Kanash on January 13, 2022 at 6:19 pm

    Hi!
Tell me what is better if I fly every day: half charge after flight and then full charge before next flight, OR leave ~15% after flight and full charge before next flight, OR full charge after flight and leave it charged to next day? Of course take 30-60minutes between charging and fly

  31. Lloyd Field on January 13, 2022 at 6:19 pm

What does it mean when I just unboxed my dji fpv, plugged the battery into the charger and it has 4 flashing lights? On my mavics, that usually means the battery is too hot. But my fpv battery has never been turned on.. its room temp

  32. Calvin Adger on January 13, 2022 at 6:19 pm

    Ian, itā€™s bluesgeek from RCG.

As always, you are at the for front of knowledge.

Have you anything to report regarding sag with these batteries? At what point in the percentage indicator is there an appreciable throttle performance hit?

  43. RBAD RBAD on January 13, 2022 at 6:31 pm

    Thank you Fine Sir!
My wife bought me the DJI FPV drone combo for Fatherā€™s Day.
It is my first visit into the FPV worldā€¦. I have had Mavic 2 Zoom, Mavic 2 Pro and a ā€œMavic Mini.
This is completely different in almost every facet of operation!

Though I jut know that Iā€™ll never have the balls to flip the switch to ā€œManualā€ mode, just flying in ā€œnormalā€œ or ā€œsportā€ is A phenomenal experience indeed.

    Just one noteā€¦
DJI, as always, though providing us with a Great Leap Forward in technology, they also figured out multiple ways to screw us .
The batteries are just one of those things.

My wife purchased it from Adorama in NYC.
She wanted this to be a complete surprise, she knew Iā€™d notice any incoming shipment of that size (Adorama is ā€œsignature reqā€™d)
so she actually made the drive into NYC to buy it in their retail store.

She knew that I always need to purchase extra batteries as part of a bundle.
She Also knew I would need at least four or five batteries minimum to be able to enjoy flying.
The salesperson in Adoramaā€™s store was the typical SLEAZY ā€œsmall hatā€ SALESMAN.
(she recorded the encounterā€¦. Itā€™s horrifying to see how they treat women. They take advantage of their lack of technology knowledge)

The salesperson AND ā€œfloor managerā€ told her that the FPV used a unique new type of battery technology.
They told her that the FPV batteries were unique.
They told her the batteries would only be capable of being charged 25 cycles BEFORE SHUTTING DOWN PERMANENTLY!!
(I initially thought there was a miscommunicationā€¦. UNTIL I WATCHED HER VIDEO RECORDING!! ā€” she had recorded everything as part of the whole ā€œFatherā€™s Dayā€ presentation šŸ˜³šŸ˜ )

They told her that the average customer was purchasing 10 additional batteries with each
drone combo pack. (5x the double battery set)

She said she felt under tremendous pressure.
She knew I desperately wanted this craft and wanted to thoroughly enjoy it.
Sadly, she believed what they were saying and spent more money on batteries then on the craft!
They make life very difficult with their returns and many times friends have returned items and not been credited Iā€™ve had huge restocking fees applied.

So, I now have a ton of batteries. Itā€™s actually phenomenal having so many to use, but that was a fortune and I couldā€™ve used the money in so many other waysā€¦.

    Thanks for your videos ..you
ave a great channel. Itā€™s about the only channel related to drones that I watch..
other than Kenn Heron and original dobo .

Great as always!!!! The BEST!! Thank you so much on letting me know on what happens when I press the button to check battery level. I did not know that it resets countdown to discharge. Thank you so much! Keep the GREAT work up.

  48. Kitzzy155 on January 13, 2022 at 6:37 pm

Thank you for de-mystifying the FPV Smart Battery! I just love that you share some info that will keep all of us flying!

  49. FPVSlice on January 13, 2022 at 6:37 pm

Great video! What do you exactly mean by, run them through a cycle? 13:10
Like go out and fly once in a while during winter when they are inactive?

  50. Thomas G on January 13, 2022 at 6:37 pm

These smart features to be built into the battery are bullshit. These can be built into the drone and the battery could be cheaper. I fly RC helis, we alo have Battery capacity measurements, voltage, and current measurements built into the speed controller itself. So i know exactly that i discarged 2893 mah from the 5000 battery. They just want to make more money on batteries….
