**Why do I need antivirus protection for my computer?**

According to reliable statistics, there is a malware attack every 39 seconds. According to SonicWall, the global malware volume hit 10 billion last year. Similarly, 187.7 million ransomware attacks, 40.8 million web app attacks and 4 trillion intrusion attempts were also recorded last year.

According to Forbes, the cybercrime damages will cost the world a whopping $6 trillion a year by 2021.

So it’s critical to have reliable antivirus protection if you want to keep your computer and other internet-capable devices free from malicious programs and hackers.

**What’s the difference between premium & free antivirus products?**

Premium products come with a slew of advanced features and utilities that you won’t get with a freeware. These include a file shredder, multi-layered ransomware protection and web protection, a full-fledged password manager, a useful system optimizer, parental controls, encrypted storage, a VPN utility, and more.

The free versions aren’t as sophisticated as the premium ones when it comes to anti-malware protection. But most free solutions out there do offer a bare minimum level of antivirus coverage.

From my own personal experience, these paid anti virus products are not invulnerable to being successfully hacked. I had an account with Bitdefender that was compromised via a hacked Bitdefender server. My account details listed someone else as the owner, most likely an alias with an email that wasn’t mine. In addition my hard disk was wiped by the attacker. When I contacted Bitdefender, they were not willing to offer any information as to what occurred. I had to change all my passwords to my sensitive accounts and reconstruct my computer data. The lesson learned, don’t trust any of these products to protect you. YOU, and how you use the internet are the ultimate front line defense against cyber attacks. I have now set up VLANS and keep all unknown traffic off my home network. I only visit websites I trust with my home network and don’t open attachments from unknown unsolicited emails or click on to links I’m not familiar with. I have also set up very strong passwords for my sensitive accounts and even with those will be changing them periodically. Sure it’s a lot of work and not much fun. But fixing the problems created resulting from an attack is much more work and a lot less fun.

I always buy my security at local computer outlets. The software is always on sale for about $20.00/year. 3-4 months ago I picked up Bitdefender Internet Security for $25.00 – A 2 year subscription.

  28. Thommadura on December 4, 2020 at 5:50 pm

DO NOT BUY BITDEFENDER – it is Madening – everytime it detects something it sends out a notification – often MULTIPLE notification that Stop your computer until you close the notification and there is NO WAY TO TURN this nonsense off. I have times when I get 10 notifications in a minute making MY computer useless with this installed. While they tell you how to disable the many notifications they use to try to sell you more of their products and it works sometimes – it does nothing about the notifications for other things and it is worse than spam that takes over your computer – which is ALL IT IS.

Honestly, i would say Windows Defender is better than the 3rd party free tools.
Saying this as someone who works in the cybersecurity space himself, and defender Advanced Threat Protection is a far more complete solution, and a level above everything mentioned here.

  32. First on December 4, 2020 at 5:51 pm

Just a note when you get infected:
    That’s not the malware,

    McAfee is the malware

The best security for 10 is what comes with/in it, which is excellent, free & On by default. DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE❗

Windows Defender which is included in Windows 10 is all you need. It is not a resource hog and you hardly know it’s there. Having been a Malware expert for over ten years I find that attacks by viruses is almost non-existent. There is no profit in infecting your computer. The real money is in ransomware where they can lock your files and demand payment to release them.

  47. James Edwards on December 4, 2020 at 6:14 pm

Why didn’t you talk about windows 10 security suite. I think it’s called Microsoft Windows Defender?

  48. Thomas Andrews on December 4, 2020 at 6:14 pm
