If you need a cheap laptop go with an old thinkpad, better io, hot swappable batteries, incredible keyboards.

im using a 9 or 10 year old thinkpad and it vibes for most things.
especially with a custom linux setup with kde (which in my opinion looks better and has vastly more features than a windows desktop) the performance is amazing
2 and 4 gigs memory. Here I am not even considering 8 anymore 🤦🏼♂️

For 150 dollars you could get a lenovo T430 that has an upgradeable cpu ,max 16gb ram and place for 2 SSD and an ips display
I’ve been using a dell inspiron 3541 that I bought back in 2015 for around $200. It came with a 500GB HDD that spun at a whopping 5400 RPM, 4GB or DDR3 RAM at 1333MHz, an AMD A6-6310 with integrated graphics…
Let’s say it wasn’t doing much quickly at all. Battery life was okay and the touch pad was well.. trash. But it got me through in a pinch.
I still have the device today. Though with a few updates. Swapped out the ram for 8GB at 1600MHz and the hard drive to a 2TB SSD and swapped out the wifi card to a wifi 6 dual band card that is faster than the 10/100 ethernet port on the machine.
Hooked it up to a USB dock and run a few monitors off it and use a keyboard and mouse now rather than the integrated keyboard and track pad.
Anything to he bought for less than 200 dollars running windows 10 or 11… good luck. Especially with 4GB of ram and a HDD. You’ll get a chrome tab and wait 5 minutes to open a PDF document.

I have a Compaq Presario from the mid thousands that has better clock speeds, AND it has a disk drive
The only thing these laptops have over my Compaq is that they have more ram.

I will tell you that the AMD A4, A6, A8, and A10 processors suck real bad
I am watching this in 2022. Looking at the deck flex on the keyboard, To be honest HP Elitebooks even have a fair amount of that flex around the keyboard, which really shouldn’t happen at the price point of the HP devices.

Wal-Mart used to sell E-Machines (and Packard Bell’s I think.) Since I saw those junk PC’s there in the 1990’s I’ve maintained this motto: "Never buy a computer from Wal-Mart."
