Appliance repair ripoffs caught on camera (Marketplace)

We wire up a house with hidden cameras, rig a washing machine that’s easy to fix and then shop for appliance repair companies on Google. Will you get the fix you need or get ripped off? And what happens when you end up with one company you never called in the first place? We uncover fake listings across the country and many lead back to one call centre north of Toronto.

I run an hvac company, these ppl are bad but a lot of what CBC says makes no sense it’s not the job of the company to know exactly what’s wrong and give you an exact price before even seeing what’s wrong..

When people can’t bother to spend 30s on Google finding a list of tests to run, then 5 minutes running those tests, ofcourse you’ll get scammed. Even if you don’t feel comfortable replace a part, even though it’s just a few bolts and wire harnesses, you’ll atleast know you aren’t being scammed.

As a technician I am always worried about someone else checking my work at anytime down the road. So I make it a point to do quality work that should be done in the best interest of the customer. Not in the best interest of my paycheck.
And 700 dollars…. just go get a new washing machine!

  32. Quack Smack on April 6, 2021 at 3:53 am

  33. bob dylan on April 6, 2021 at 3:53 am

if someone rips you off by saying $80 on the phone and then changes the price to $300 just tell them to take it out then. put in a complaint with the company and/take legal actions. dont even need a lawyer tbh.

  39. Jay Uribe on April 6, 2021 at 3:59 am

Thats not how it works. You can purchase the part on your own but for warranty purposes they go through their own part vendors. Just like every other service there is a markup on the price to make a profit to continue to use the resource of said vendor. I cant speak on behalf of the ones doing repairs where none are needed. Any real company will not use customer bought parts. You get what you pay for buying aftermarket parts on places like amazon, and often times people dont know how to buy the correct parts. Cheaping out is never the answer. Look for a company thats highly recommended and licensed and insured to show they take responsibility. My company goes as far as insurance to protect scratching a customers floor with an appliance. A few bad apples should not be responsible for everyone disrespecting the profession of another working man. Every service trade works this way, from plumbers to electricians.
