TOP 5 GAMES OF 2020 | STRATEGY, TACTICS, RPG & SIM (PC)

2020 draws to a close, so it’s time to look back at a great year of strategy, tactics, RPG, sim and management games. This list of top games was tough to curate – there were many games that released in the strategy, tactics, RPG, sim, city-building and management genres this year, but quite a few didn’t leave the “Top Game” mark on my mind or heart. And I didn’t want to simply fill out a list of 5 without feeling passionate about each choice. Fortunately, spending some time with my backlog highlighted some absolute gems that I hope you’ll enjoy, if you haven’t already!

On the topic of gems, here are Top 5 Games that you may have missed in 2020: https://youtu.be/eYaW1nvDI3E – these aren’t the best games of the year, but they are certainly special, and well worth your time and attention.

I did ignore Gears Tactics, I’m buying it when I get home, for sure!

  2. MALEK HAYYANI on January 9, 2022 at 3:39 pm

    Anno 1800 ? Warhammer2 Total war

  3. Paracelsus93 on January 9, 2022 at 3:40 pm

I must sadly admit that CK3 is worse than CK2, at least at this moment.

  4. Rix Gaming on January 9, 2022 at 3:41 pm

I’m really not interested in any games made or published by paradox at all. No matter how good they are i won’t care. That company is just cancer with their monetization. Also what’s port royal 3 doing on the list? It’s exactly the same game as part2 – super lazy, no improvements, no new features. Port royal 3 is just a remake of an ancient game. We’ve been playing this exact game since the 1990s and nothing has improved. Not worth to be on any list. 2020 was a bad year for the genre. Let’s see if it gets better this year.

  5. simplyafederalist on January 9, 2022 at 3:42 pm

Banner lord. Just like warband with some of the good modsl for now. Port Royal 4 just like port roryal 1 2 and 3. Ck3 a pale much less detail game than ck2 with dlcs so much less varity and debth.

  6. sai srinivas on January 9, 2022 at 3:43 pm

i wanted to know iron harvest 🙁

  7. foolproofman on January 9, 2022 at 3:45 pm

I have only played one Gears game. when it was new, all the years back, but im not into shooters so I didnt finish it – even though i remember it was a good catchy game. HOWEVER as a fan of tactics games I see a must play. Thanks! I would not even think this exists without you!

  8. MathewWithOneTea on January 9, 2022 at 3:46 pm

Bannerlord 2 is undeniably my favorite. It’s not perfect by any stretch, but it’s a diamond in the rough. I’d like to see the crafting to include armors, some sort of "transmog" system, better army UI, etc – but even still, I have clocked over 600-700 hrs, and I don’t plan on stopping next year.

I was eager to try Bannerlord, but the fighting system already made me weary. And I felt lost so quickly that I gave it up after only a few minutes. Port Royale is even worse. I played the demo and bought the game but I was bored with it so quickly, I didn’t even get much for my investment. Hard to tell what my favorites were since I played mostly older games like EU4, but CK3 was definitely up there. Ostriv, Avorion, Sky Haven and Dysmantle also did well in my playtime.

  12. ibnfuzzayd on January 9, 2022 at 3:50 pm

You convinced me to give PR4 another shot

  13. Saketh CVES on January 9, 2022 at 3:51 pm

I am truly sad you never finished deperados 3

  14. Jack Nørdam Pedersen on January 9, 2022 at 3:53 pm

I do not quite agree with you. Crusader Kings 3 and Desperados 3 are top 5 games, but then I disagree. I have Anno 1800, Snowrunner and C & C remastered/Space Haven even though it is only Alpha right now. But maybe I’m just enjoying other types of games than most people.

  15. RemusKingOfRome5 on January 9, 2022 at 3:53 pm

I would reverse your order, Bannerlords (1) because it’s battles are class leading, while CK3 gets (5) because their tactical battles are very poor.

  16. King Arthur on January 9, 2022 at 3:53 pm

I want a game like total war medieval 2…but…not off sega…ca…l wish someone else would make one and include detailed fighting animations…make battles ultra realistic ..none of this mobile phone game rubbish creative assembly is starting to do like 100% arrow blocks etcetc…also like bannorlord if you could woth a co op friend share troops out like wh2 mortal empires campaign..but then like bannorlord zoom in and actually fight with men…total war games were great but now they look dated…Troy as troops just all run into each other in a mess and zero animations is just boring as hell….l want to zoom in..see men us a shield to brace ..to see there seord finish off a enemy…to see actual realistic fighting..total war games are now becoming dumbed down mess and boring as hell to zoom; n on troops as they just sll hit air like its a rpg or randomly fling! THemselves to floor as they die for zero reason….l dont like turn based or strategy games with no actual fighting in..l like to see my troops win in rts

    Incredible content, sir

  18. hadess 101 on January 9, 2022 at 3:54 pm

we NEED A FREAKING GAME LIKE RED ALERT 2 ALL DOGSHIT

  19. JVee Veneracion on January 9, 2022 at 3:56 pm

watching Port Royale having weak ship battle and i’m like, "i’m gonna play Sid Meier’s Pirates! instead"

  20. DUB on January 9, 2022 at 4:01 pm

ultimately, for me, it’s a shame there are not more city builder or city managers on the list.

  21. Danny Thomson on January 9, 2022 at 4:03 pm

love how you split the sections of your videos up with separate titles (on the red playing line under vid) makes it so easy to skip a section i perhaps dont like or want to see.
anyway now ive got that out the way, im glad you included gears tactics, i was never a fan of gears but decided to try gears because i love the XCOM series, i am so glad i did try gears, yes there are similaritys to XCOM’s style but gears made a very welcome addition to that style of tactical game, graphically it is beautiful to look at and a whole bunch of fun to play.
edit, a prediction for number one game of 2021- Falling Frontier! i only heard of it on your recent video about it and my god i have not been this excited about an upcoming game for nearly a decade, i have watched hours of preview vids of it on the dev channel and other reviewer vids now.

  22. Nick Dzink on January 9, 2022 at 4:04 pm

    I don’t see Warhammer 2 Total War here… I unsub!

  23. Rex1987 on January 9, 2022 at 4:06 pm

i think besides Gear Tactics, i think that wasteland 3 is one of the best tactical games of the year. Really, really good!

  24. Saketh CVES on January 9, 2022 at 4:08 pm

    WOOO!! BANNERLORD!!!

  25. Bozo Bandoroso on January 9, 2022 at 4:10 pm

Happy New Year! Thank you for an excellent list. I agree until number one. Probably because I’m an old CK2 nerd, with 5000+ hours invested. Imho Wasteland 3 ends up at the top, as the best game of the year.

  26. DeFa - Fun Play on January 9, 2022 at 4:12 pm

I wish they did this in port royale 3 what they did in 6:05 . I don’t like loading from island view to global/sea map.. mixed reviews in steam, don’t know which part makes it not good..

  27. Zac on January 9, 2022 at 4:12 pm

Can confirm banner lord is awesome. I have 60 hours in it!

  28. TheLukeFalcon on January 9, 2022 at 4:13 pm

These were some good years for strategy games overall. I’m still ‘stuck’ enjoying games from 2019 and now I really want to try all of the ones from this video :p

  29. Kristofer Ogg Castanié on January 9, 2022 at 4:13 pm

My man PE with another great video. These are why I am a member of the channel for sure.
    5. Still holding off on Bannerlord for the full release. But hope this vision is realised.
    4. The port royale game hasn’t received much good coverage. What I have seen doesn’t look all that fleshed out or great for that matter. Interesting to see it on your list. Maybe one day when it is more fleshed out. Regardless , its now added to my wish list.
3.Gears tactics looked great. Would have liked to have seen more options in customisation and more sandboxy options for a career type mode.
    2. Desperados , for me I loved watching my favourite creators play it but that was me, i was then content with the content. Didnt feel the need to playthrough myself, but was great to see a good release this year which seems to be uncommon nowadays.
    1. CK 3 – Fantastic. Cant wait for more content and events which it really needs. Well worth top spot!
Thanks for a great year of content PE.

    Cheers

  30. Nesgamer7 on January 9, 2022 at 4:17 pm

Immagine a game from the fusion of Bannerlord and Crusaider Kings 3

  31. Mule Avenger on January 9, 2022 at 4:18 pm

Paradox: We are removing the words Deus Vault from CK3.
    Me: Never again

  32. Jazzy B on January 9, 2022 at 4:18 pm

Awesome selection, I own two of these already and Desperados 3 has been on my radar too. What other games would you say were worth mentioning for 2020 that just missed the cut?

  33. Werewolf13 on January 9, 2022 at 4:18 pm

Port Royale 4 – Very suprised to see PR4 on the list – I’m biased though because it was not what I expected based on the marketing hype (which was a 21st Century spiritual successor to Sid Meirer’s Pirates – my all time favorite PC game). PR4 turned out to be too similar to PR3 for me. That said: as usual – your commentary about each of the 5 is spot on and peppered with interesting notes about things this one never considered. OH – and by the way – with the exception of PR4 I either already own or they’re still on my wishlist. Great minds think alike. 😎

  34. King David on January 9, 2022 at 4:19 pm

Awesome list and I couldn’t agree more with what you had to say in this video.
    🤟🤓👍

  35. Carol Wilson on January 9, 2022 at 4:23 pm

I am looking forward to what you are looking for in 2021

  36. Marlon Li on January 9, 2022 at 4:23 pm

My man you have the same taste in games as I do and I demand that you do 10-15min long game reviews.

  37. golan on January 9, 2022 at 4:25 pm

It’s kind of weird to rank such a list considering the trends in the industry. Not sure CK3 is that good at the moment, it just shows potential and it’s good enough so that I won’t be able to play CK2 anymore despite it being feature complete. But CK3 does also feel incomplete, so I wouldn’t have put it on the first spot for that alone.

  38. Kings and Generals on January 9, 2022 at 4:26 pm

I was hopeful that Partisans 1941 will be as good as Desperados III. Alas, no luck.

  39. Trifler on January 9, 2022 at 4:27 pm

So may curb stomps that the curb itself got stomped.

  40. PartyElite on January 9, 2022 at 4:28 pm

Don’t forget to check this video out for 5 more games that I think are worth your time and attention – https://youtu.be/eYaW1nvDI3E !

How do you feel about the state of these genres in 2020? Any games you think should be included in here? Factorio and RimWorld have been playable for so long, it’s hard to think of them as 2020 releases… and we also had some games finally arrive on Steam after first arriving on EGS. Would love to hear your thoughts and picks, as always!

  41. Jon Taylor on January 9, 2022 at 4:29 pm

Great video, but I’m afraid I can only go with Desperados on the list. I’m not a fan of the other games at all.

  42. Big Dan Deg on January 9, 2022 at 4:31 pm

CK3 is another league compared to other 4X

  43. Dwan Raimee on January 9, 2022 at 4:31 pm

Merry Christmas and a happy new year mate from Australia. Thank you for the Strategy love you’ve been sharing

  44. Elmer Fudd on January 9, 2022 at 4:32 pm

Which tactical RPGs would you recommend for beginners, please?

  45. Byron Knight on January 9, 2022 at 4:32 pm

Port Royale 4 = Slaver Simulator 4 smh lol

  46. Sick Bozo on January 9, 2022 at 4:33 pm

bannerlord frustrations : seeing the khuzait roll over the entire map every single game since launch. (at least time i checked)

  47. Saketh CVES on January 9, 2022 at 4:34 pm

"There are some issues" *goes to calatilds army*

  48. Liimbo on January 9, 2022 at 4:35 pm

Great video. Recently got into CK3 and Soviet Republic from your channel. Great content and super welcoming and helpful to new players.

  49. Bearded Guy on January 9, 2022 at 4:36 pm

Bannerlords, Mount and Blade II, easy win.

  50. X Maestro on January 9, 2022 at 4:36 pm

    Turn-based games are a niche.
