    The power numbers are more interesting for engineers than all the other equipment. The laptop you buy should depend on the software you use.

    CAD: CAD-Software uses only one thread of you CPU. That means that the number of the cores isn’t that important. For CAD you should look for a CPU with the highest clock speed you can get.

    Simulation programs: Simulation programs are the complete opposite the CAD-software. They use all the cores of the CPU. If you do a lot of simulations you should get a PC with a lot of cores.

    GPU: You should definitely look for a PC with a discrete graphics card. Some programs are able to use the GPU as a second CPU. And don’t get fooled be workstation GPUs. The only difference is that they are more expensive because driver problems get solved quicker compared to a gaming GPU.

    RAM: Get at least 16 GB of RAM. Engineering work tasks heavily rely on memory. 32 GB would be ideal.
