Tested brutally! Bicycle smartphone handlebar mounts

Tested brutally! Bicycle smartphone handlebar mounts

If you don’t want to shell out for a dedicated Garmin or other advanced cycling computer, your smartphone can be a great alternative. The question is, can you really go mountain biking with one on your handlebars? To find out, we test these phone mounts on a hardtail and subject them to some pretty hard hits.

In the same order as the video, here are the mounts we tested with links

Silica Rubber Mount https://amzn.to/31k2sc2
This one could be great for road or gravel, but for rough mountain biking it’s going to move around.

VUP Detachable https://amzn.to/2Vta34l
Road cycling only. This one can’t get tightened enough to work for mountain biking without creeping towards the more narrow part of your handlebar.

GUB metal phone mount https://amzn.to/2Vp4CDx
Very secure, but potentially hazardous. For a motorcycle this seems good since it sticks out far enough to clear the instrument cluster, but on a bike this seems needlessly dangerous.

Quad Lock Out Front Bike Mount https://amzn.to/2VqfCAq
Quad Lock case for iPhone 11 Pro https://amzn.to/2ZgNH71
Functionally, this product is as flawless as it gets, but it’ll cost you dearly. Another downside is the fact that you need to change your phone case to use it, and not all cases are available. Choose from a variety of mounts.

The Gub Phone holder not really designed for mtb cause it has a sharp edges because if you go otb the sharp edges can cut your neck or your chest because during a crash the phone holder is supposed to budge but the one on the gub is allen key mounted

Tip: Use a protective layer over your screen.

I’ve gone through several of these phone holders. They all wear out. My robust Samsung xcover s4 phone has flown 60 km/h down and along the road/gravel plenty of times due to malfunctioning equipment. I was lucky the s4 survived. You may not be. Take every precaution you can to save yourself data and 100s of dollars.

sorry might be a stupid question- is quadlock thief-proof? like a random thief randomly pulling your phone off the handle bar?

  13. GOLDEN TYPHOON on January 10, 2021 at 2:26 am

What a burn to Samsung, DAMN Seth.

Do a diss track on Samsung lmao

  14. Jack Bevan on January 10, 2021 at 2:26 am

i’ve had a lot of issues with these styles of mounts transmitting too much force to my phone, and the shock damaging internals/back of phone (I road bike, but I ride pretty hard, especially up/down curbs potholes etc.)
That’s why I moved to phone bag mounts, the bag works as a shock-absorber, and I can also have a power pack with me if I need it.

  15. Henry Siemer on January 10, 2021 at 2:30 am

  23. RIZΞ_ AIRIER on January 10, 2021 at 2:37 am

Ahhhh ik i sound like I’m trying to nit pick everything, but quad-lock actually makes a universal sticker of the quad-lock to stick onto ur pre existing case. Which I used on my Samsung j5.

  24. Blu CZ on January 10, 2021 at 2:38 am

  30. Daegan Patterson on January 10, 2021 at 2:43 am

I used the Rockform mount and it worked amazing. It was magnetic, latched and had a leash. But I went otb and smashed my phone.

  31. Matt Kauffman on January 10, 2021 at 2:44 am

    Totally enjoy your videos.
My Hack for a phone mount, is simply using 2 zip-strips and fastening my belt clip phone holder, to my handlebars, centered above the stem. Never had my phone come off, even OTB in the rock garden. It mounts flat and out of the way, never changes position.
    Keep up the great videos!

  32. Jrmy Jansalin on January 10, 2021 at 2:44 am

If you have a plastic strap be sure to put a rubber strap (a small piece of old tire) below it before locking it so in that way it makes the strap more secure 😉

Quad lock sells adapters you can add onto your case, for example for phones they don’t make cases for

  41. Ryker Alvey on January 10, 2021 at 2:57 am

  43. ridingwith_JP on January 10, 2021 at 3:03 am

You actually don’t have to use their case, because they sell a universal adapter, that you can be used on any case.
