I like the video’s you guys make but this one missed the mark. Your video’s name is, Sony PlayStation 1 :: RGB206. Not the PS2 or the PS3 Or PSP or VITA. It’s Sony PlayStation 1 :: RGB206. There are other ways to get RGB from a PS1.

you guys made me buy so much shit over the past couple weeks. Im all geared up now

I’m curious about the PS1 emulation on PS3. For Classics, when the smoothing is turned off and the screen mode is ‘Normal’, are they being displayed in the proper pixel ratio at all? I always figured they weren’t, as they look slightly stretched vertically, but just want to be sure.

Also, the fact that some discs give a sharper image is fascinating. Is there a list somewhere of all the games that benefit from this? I recently put in an old demo disc and I noticed that it looked really good. Very clear, and that it may have even been in the correct aspect ratio. Wondering if those discs have different pixel scaling too.

2021 Have my PS3 for the first 3 generations and PS5 for gen 4 and 5. Also a PSP 3000 for on the go.

My og fat ps2 can’t play music in castlevania chronicles arrange mode

  6. ViciousDave4Life on November 20, 2021 at 11:23 am

I do what I can. I usually play PS1 games on PS3 and play them in movie picture mode. It softens the graphics so I don’t see the jaggies as much and makes the games look much better. However to play them on a CRT tv would be way better.

    PS1+ S-VIDEO CABLE+ CRT 240p= HANDS DOWN!

  9. Orkestrius Music on November 20, 2021 at 11:26 am

Anyone else play ps1 games, on a ps3, with a ps4 controller plugged directly in? Feels like a totally different game when using a ps4 controller

I wonder if a modded psp go would have any extra benefits regarding crt gaming

  16. Guy Manley on November 20, 2021 at 11:35 am

Good to know I can use my PS2 component cables with my still in mail Retrotink 5x to play PS1 games at 240p. 🙂

  17. Kevin Vo on November 20, 2021 at 11:37 am

I do have to ask with the psp and psgo. How would you get these ps1 games? Thought the services had shut down a long time ago, even when this episode was released

  18. Indexical on November 20, 2021 at 11:38 am

Great video guys. Out of interest what screen size preset do you use on vita for psx games? It looks great here and I’ve been messing with the settings but not sure I’ve got it right.

  19. Peter Hoeller on November 20, 2021 at 11:39 am

10:20 timestamp for PS3 backwards compatibility.

  20. Steele Furey on November 20, 2021 at 11:39 am

Yeah PS2 supported PS1 games but the LED TV’s didn’t, due to the low resolution. So without an extremely expensive and now scarce official upscaler you have to play in Composhit video!, finding a HD TV which states low res support is non existent and a bit of a lottery when choosing a Smart TV. My old Smart Samsung supported ps1 games with Component cable it but my LG does not.

  21. Gerjan D on November 20, 2021 at 11:39 am

Hi guys, I was curious if you know if there are differences between PlayStation drivers on PS2 for smoothing etc. I have a PS2 Bravia console and psx games look absolutely fabulous on this system. I found out that the PlayStation driver on the Bravia console is on a higher number than previous PS2’s.

  22. o1230sponge on November 20, 2021 at 11:40 am

My theories for why the disc versions of PS1 games are sharper than the Classics is that they use either different emulators or the settings can be customized per game for classics. I’d guess the scaling settings are either set different, or maybe they emulate the console at different resolutions.

  23. Kai Tsurugi on November 20, 2021 at 11:41 am

    This was very informative!
    Thank you so such! 😀

  24. ArcaneTuber on November 20, 2021 at 11:48 am

11:47 So, when you play PS1 games on a PS3, playing in 720p is better than 1080p? (because the scaling is better?) 🤔

  25. albino_gringo on November 20, 2021 at 11:50 am

fun fact the psp emulates the ps1 cpu in hardware because it also uses a MIPS cpu

  26. one on November 20, 2021 at 11:51 am

The PS3 actually uses two separate PS1 emulators, ps1_emu for discs and ps1_netemu for downloads. Netemu applies the blur filter while emu is sharp.

There’s a third one called ps1_newemu but it remains unused on stock systems.

  31. L-ONE-X - Video Game Music & Discussions on November 20, 2021 at 11:58 am

I love emulation. I don’t usually use it to play the full game. but dotting through games maxed on on epsxe is always fascinating.

I hear that Final Fantasy IX music!

  33. baby boomer twerk team on November 20, 2021 at 11:59 am

The PS1 processor IS NOT onboard on all PS2 models! The PS2 Slim SCPH-750xx and later removed it and replaced it with a PowerPC chip that emulates the PS1 chip. These models have worse compatibility with PS1 games. The ORIGINAL slim model (the SCPH-700xx) DOES have the PS1 chip and overall has the best compatibility with PS1 games of all the PS2 models.

  34. Drone Adventures on November 20, 2021 at 11:59 am

Very happy you guys are opening up about your crt addiction 😀
I just got into it, and its AMAZING
Smooth like butter, great blacks and such vibrant color. So my addiction has yielded a 20f1u, hdm 20r1u and a 14n2u, the bvm is fantastic for 240 with those awesome scan lines, but the hdm when playing 240p through emulation is the greatest prettiest image I’ve seen In my 40 years.

  35. Zachary Drummond on November 20, 2021 at 12:01 pm

Someone needs to hack that PS1 TV for 480i and 240p.

just bought an old ps1 on eBay then found out my ps3 will play ps1 games……dang

  43. brandontalbort on November 20, 2021 at 12:10 pm

These days PS3 is also great for some of those "way out of my price range" PS1 games like the Arc the Lad games, Silent Hill, Vagrant Story, etc. I’m building a cart as I’m writing this.

  44. Kr!t!cal K!tsuné on November 20, 2021 at 12:10 pm

What’s the game at 21:46 called?

  45. AbstractM0use on November 20, 2021 at 12:10 pm

I’m mixed on whether PS1 games look better on PS2. They certainly look sharper, and colors are a little more vivid, especially if you’re using S-video or better, but the dithering is an eyesore. Especially on particle effects like smoke or water spray. The slightly blurrier look on the PS1 hides that and gives it a sfumato effect, like a painting.

  46. DJ No-Good on November 20, 2021 at 12:11 pm

    Great Video, Thanks a Million!

  47. Jay Time on November 20, 2021 at 12:11 pm

PS1 is the my favroit console ever made just look how well they got it….. not much else could have been done to make it any better…. I wish THAT was the retro mini instead of the stove top one

  48. Alan Lee on November 20, 2021 at 12:11 pm

Ps3 can disable the upscaler on ps1 games as well as dvds. It’s awesome to output raw video to an m classic and it looks much better than the internal upscaler. I don’t know how it compares to an ossc or framemeister but it is cheaper and easier. I also don’t know of too many consumer dvd players that output raw video. Dvd video looks great when put through an m classic
