Pathfinder Kingmaker Review PS4 – Definitive Edition – [5 Step Review]
Pathfinder Kingmaker Review PS4 – Definitive Edition – [5 Step Review]
Pathfinder: Kingmaker Definitive Edition has hit PS4 today. Here is my Pathfinder: Kingmaker PS4 review – I do my 5 Step review of this isometric classic RPG based on Pathfinder D&D – this is a good game, but not great – looks like Baldur’s Gate, but not for everyone.
Pathfinder: Kingmaker looks to be getting a sequel Pathfinder game at some point based on the success of Kingmaker. It’s a good RPG with great story, interesting mechanics and Pathfinder Kingmaker on PS4 is obviously strongly based on the elements of the table top adventure.

I’m sorry but you can’t have an in-depth review in 9 minutes, and this is certainly not an in-depth one 😉 I don’t understand why you’d have to spend time on Youtube etc. "trying to understand the full extent of the game", because it’s pretty straightforward, and as every single CRPG, there are wikies to summarize the information (perhaps if you took the time to elaborate?). "Designed for PC" yes, agreed, I don’t undestand why they’d port that to console, it’s indeed a different audience. Your main gripe is "I had no idea what I was doing at times / game doesn’t inform me"… Firstly, from your review it doesn’t seem that you played it very long, and it’s normal to be a bit lost at the beginning of a new CRPG. Secondly, the journal is very thorough and even shows the type of quests and their progress, there are also indications on the towns about which quests are awaiting, I find this is already more than enough. The problem is that nowadays, people expect a pointer "what to do next" and an arrow on NPCs that give quests or allow to progress in them, like in Ubisoft’s games. And there is even a map… personally I find it’s already way too much pointers. Paying attention to the narrative should already give all the information the player needs. Let the people actually *think* again. "Tutorial over-complicated"? May I ask if you are actually familiar with RPGs, because I simply can’t recognize the game you describe at this point. Or perhaps you were unlucky to test it on the new Definitive edition, which probably needs some ironing out. I had zero freeze or problem so far (but I stopped a little before this last update), and haven’t lost any saved games.
My advice: have a look at the Pathfinder rulebook (1st edition) to get familiar with this sytem, which allows for more freedom in character evolution than D&D, wait for the game to get some hotfixes, and take the time to play it enough to give a review. Then take the time to elaborate and justify your claims, because otherwise we can hardly acknowledge them.
Is it a good console port? Or is it a horrible nightmarish mountain of dog shit like pillars of eternity?
I’m sorry, but you not getting how to deal with Swarms is 100% your own fault, there’s a tooltip telling you how to do it and the NPC even gives you free Bombs in case you missed the first hint.
Given how much depth this game has compared to every other modern cRPG I’d say it does a pretty good job explaining its mechanics, especially regarding the ruleset.
I have 230 hrs in this game on steam the only things I dislike are the hidden time limits and sometimes kingdom management is frustrating
Cool review mate. Keep it up!
Good review, personally l am loving this game. Highly addictive, l actually like the fact that it doesnt hold your hand. At the start l had similar issues with the game crashing but since the update l have had no issues.
idk y but i just keeps crashing, non stop.
Quality review. Found it fair and honest. I personally like the game but I can see those who never played a CRPG, it will be overwhelming, which could ruin their experience. So your seven out of ten is understandable.
Keep up the good work.
Great review, and I’d like to ask. As you levelled up, were the dice rolls better? Or were you still missing hits at higher levels at the same rate at lower levels?
I got this on the Xbox and the freezing and corrupt save files is it’s own specific rng based roll system. Never did I get a nat 20… always ones or twos
This is a really good review. You didn’t beat around the bush and said it as it is, excellent job.
I want it on ps4 now super bad 🙁 that new turn based mode is a god sent . I stopped playing on PC because that pause real time garage is horrible AF.
A heads up about normal difficulty is that it is a VERY hardcore dm style mode..no allowances no fudging just straight up by the books..meaning last of checks are above what your group can handle yet or are up there in difficulty
As for the tutorial they’ve said in the next game they will focus on making a better one
1) You prefer baldur’s gate because it’s better?
2) Is this a review or a comparison to baldur’s gate?
3) You blame the dice rolls, imply their tainted?
4) It’s not fun to play any RPG knowing everything you need to know before hand.
5) I agree with you that playing this requires lots of patience.
6) All in all I don’t like your review much.
Just hope it dont freeze lock up to much I’ve got few games that do a little but can general make do as I’m offline only
Poor man’s Divinity?
How to be a YouTube game critique = keep refrencing other games.
I think the proper nomenclature is Pathfinder RPG, not Pathfinder D&D. Pathfinder 1e was based off of D&D 3.5 but it is its own animal.
Always have 2 savegames, basic rule for any gamer. And at diferent points, save once on each one.
Can you tell me how to level up my characters I have been going nuts for hours to figure this out. I go to my characters sheet shows I need to level but it wont give me a option to level up. I just got to olegs and in the rest phase.
I loved pillars of eternity 1 and 2 but enjoyed 1 more, will I like this Game on PS4?
Thanks for the review
Dude, it’s "Without further A DO". not ADUE". It’s not french, it’s english
There’s a reason when you look at the video length that it seems like he’s telling the truth when he says "in depth". because he spends the first 30% of the video talking about himself, how he THINKS he reviews games, how he needs your money, how he wants your money, how he wants your likes, how he wants your views and your comments, how he wants your patreon, want want want want want,
My good sir you nailed exactly what my experience has been so far.
I had to stop. I feel like you were explaining your review more than the game and every critique about the game, when it came up, was couched with how you’ll explain it later and you talked more about your review.
Sorry but all i heard in this video was. "I like Baldurs gate!

Good review mate & congrats on the huge view count :-O
Great review! Now I will note, part of the reason you were confused on mechanics is because pathfinder as a game system is VERY confusing for new people. But this helped me decide to wait on buying it on ps4
Halp! Game hard and doesn’t hold my hand…this is your gripe, seriously? I mean I get the port issues but a game that makes you think, adjust, and experiment is not a fault imo.
It seems to be a recuring theme among tabletop versions of prewritten Pathfinder campaigns to be overly difficult for the party. Maybe it’s because Pathfinder’s core fan base is made up of min-maxers and power gamers, and I don’t mean that in any negative light.
So, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having to play Pathfinder: Kingmaker, the video game, on easy difficulty.
Great review. Will you be reviewing Wasteland 3 on ps4? 🙂
Me: "Its pathfinder but it’s a video game, so all my problems with that system being complicated for the sake of being complicated should be taken care of by automation."
Watches review: "this game is fun but overly complicated."
🙁
I love my PlayStation but I would never play a game like this on anything other than PC.
I think you a re e underselling how fantastic this game is for people who actually either know or want to learn to play pathfinder/D&D.
The difficulty and knowledge is part of what makes it so extremely engaging. Dont turn down the difficulty. It’s like playing dark souls on easy mode.
OMG, this game is ASS. At least on PS4, I haven’t played the PC release. The AI sucks, enemies will fail to notice someone who shoots at them and then backs away forcing me so step back in front of the entire firing squad, after casting a spell my mage will just walk into melee combat for no good reason instead of waiting for a new command like she should and I can’t choose who disables traps so when the best in the party is low on HP, I can’t send in the second best for just in case it fails and goes off.
The RNG is garbage, I’ve tracked all of my rolls over 4 hours of combat play and 60% of them were below 7 on the d20 with only 13% being above 13
Then there’s the smaller things like, sorting inventory is more complicated than it needs to be, which would all be passable as it’s their first game but at this point I’m like "Have they even play another Isometric RPG to see what’s been done before?"
For reference I’ve been playing D&D since 2nd, I’ve played Pathfinder 1 and 2, and many other tabletop RPGs that are not really all that comparable. I’ve play every Isometric RPG I could get my hands on. I have a lot of experience to draw on and it really just feels like the people who made this have none when it comes to the video game side of things.
This game is great, but …. soo long. The story is nice, the difficulty is quite hard even in normal.
I adore it, but I’m biased (I was a kickstarter backer for this & also for Wrath of the Righteous). With turn based mode now official it’s like an entirely new game. For better & worse I’m glad you didn’t see this game when it initially came out, after chapter 02 it was a buggy mess on PC, which was why the reviews were mixed. I mean the bugs REALLY HURT what was otherwise a really good "old skool" single player party based RPG. Hopefully OwlCat learned their lesson & won’t release Wrath of the Righteous until it’s bug free.
The game is a HUGE time sink folks. I spent all of 238 hours finding everything, & this was before the DLCs hit.
From someone who has played lots of these specially on console
Best to worst
Dos2 – amazing game hands down and not long ago they released more free dlc still doing playthroughs years later
Pillars 2 – spent over 120 hours and got the platinum amazing but console port ruined with bugs and crashes etc
Pathfinder – Haven’t finished but so far riddled with bugs hopefully updates will fix if there are any past the first couple initial ones
If you love these types of games you can’t go wrong with any but DOS2 has the best content, made by larian studios and no where near as many bugs thanks to constant work
Good review, covered all bases…
I played dnd 3.5 and later pathfinder 1st ed. for YEARS so they helped a ton with the learning curve for me lol. It’s actually less daunting than the number of choices you get in pen and paper
All in all, great review. Only gripe, which almost made me click away, (glad I didn’t, and only almost did because I was already in a mood) is when you said its based on the "pathfinder dungeons and dragons game". Pathfinder is a separate game by a different company. Very similar games, and pathfinder is compatible with dnd 3.5
i find the game actually unplayabe. Trying to get past the the Varnhold vanishing chapter is nearly impossible without turning of the ps4 every 30min preemptively to avoid crashing, the season of bloom chapter is where all the problems begin and it only gets worse from here. but with frame rates slowing to less than 10fps and consistent crashes for playing more than an hour. its unplayable still
Ty for a very informative review.
Finally, good console review, thank you, good sir!
Three things about Pathfinder:
-35 seconds is a huge 20sec increase from the previous cooldown of 10. He can no longer swing away like a spiderman but it’s now a one time get out of jail free card X amount of distance. Use only begins with a drone to swing on or a jump pad. 25 seconds is reasonable.
-kingmaker is an interesting skin. Servin MRVN seems to be the one of choice.
-The newest season introduced a new passive. The zip line gun gets a 10 second cooldown from 120 to 60 seconds WHEN you use a survey beacon. Essentially meaning you have to endure 6 rings for quicker zips, the risk doesn’t fully match the reward and at most times, it’s hard to rotate through every beacon with crafting materials around, devotions, treasure packs, and that pesky enemy team with volt smgs.
In conclusion I hope needed changes and adjustments are completed accordingly. I don’t want most of us holding our breath for the seventh iteration in November! <3
It sounds like D&D isn’t your cup of tea, management is paramount in this game, with as little hand holding as possible!
Pathfinder =/= Dungeons & Dragons
Played for hours… game sucks
