What makes a good laptop for an engineering student?

You guys working hard at university to get the best grades and learn everything you can to get to the next level succesfuly need a fully functioning laptop.

As a student or scholar, you want something that is fast, snappy efficient, lightweight and most importantly you want a good Battery-Life so you don’t have to worry about the charger all the time.

Engineering programs usually use up a lot of Processing and a lot of RAM. So the main 2 components you have to look out for are the CPU and the RAM.
Generally, I would Recommend and I7 As you need as many cores possible, and i7 are a good option.
Ram-wise you need around 8GB Minimum, and preferably around 16 GBS.

This is a very important investment for you to make as a student. And is gonna be your main tool as an engineer, you want it to last a long time, and serve you after you finish studying and land your job.

In order to achieve this, you can’t go cheap on your engineering laptop. Because what happens when you go cheap, is you end up pushing your pc components to the max all the time. And that wears the laptop out pretty fast.

That’s why you generally need to invest a good amount of money for a good laptop, this way your laptop will last much longer in the mean-time And will be future-proof too. You see how fast technology is evolving and engineering programs are always evolving. So if you don’t get something fast now, you will regret it in a year’s time.

Dedicated Graphics cards can definitely be helpful for engineering software, as some programs will take advantage of it for processing, however generally, its not a requirement. But its definitely good for Future-Proofing.

I Gave you 5 Options for the Best laptops possible for engineering students.

In number 5 is the Asus Vivobook S15 Laptop. This laptop is your best budget laptop as a student.

Number 4 is the Dell XPS 15, this is a Legendary laptop. Well concerned as one of the best laptops built in this year, you can’t go wrong with it.

In 3rd place is the Dell G3 15 laptop. This option will give you the highest performance to price ratio. It’s the best option for game enthusiasts.

In 2nd place is the Microsoft surface pro 6, An amazing 2-in-1 laptop by Microsoft, and is definitely good for engineering students.

Finally, in 1st place is the HP Spectre x360 15T Laptop. This has so many amazing features, and has an amazing stylus pen which is extremely accurate and useful for engineers of all types.

all gonna be good options for you.

Hello. I’m an entering freshman going into mechanical engineering at a competitive school and would like to buy a laptop that will last me at least through my undergrad experience and longer if possible. The only program we will be using specifically listed on the school website is SolidWorks. I’ve been doing some research but don’t know what would be a good option. Also, my college apparently has an agreement with Dell to give discounted prices to students buying computers that meet the required specs, but if another vendor would be better it’s fine. My price limit is around 1600. Do you have any suggestions?

  15. Nancy Flores on August 20, 2021 at 10:26 pm

Hi my name is Nancy Flores and I am going to study Mechanical Engineering at cal state Fullerton. I have done research on the laptops to buy although and my school has a contract with Dell they sell The Dell XPS 15 9570 for ($804.00). Although they also sell Apple computers and was thinking of buying the 13in MacBook Pro (2020) 2.0GHz 10th-Gen Intel core i5 for $1703 (512GB) and $1903 (1TB). I was told Dell is easier in my case because most things are done on windows and I wouldn’t have to download programs. But then again learning the programs would not be to big and I am still not sure I am going to stick to Mechanical Engineering. And do not know which to buy. I also heard the window surfacebook is great and I haven’t tried these computers so I wouldn’t know. What would be best in my case? I am planning to use my financial aid money and some money I’ve saved and I would spend at most maybe $2000 for a computer that will work well and will last throughout college or at least 2-3 yrs. Hopefully you see this, thank you for your input in these types of things.

    Hi,

Ive been thinking to upgrade my laptop so can you suggest me any laptop range 900-1000$. I usually use Solidworks, Dev C++ , Catia, and Lisa. I’m still a student so it might be not many parts to create and maybe some rendering. Im from Malaysia so maybe you can suggest me any laptop that is available in my country. Thank you ✨♥️

I was wondering if the laptop shown here https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9396461?rec=PDP%5B9195057%5D:bottomSlider:P1:OHAT:alternative:9396461:XECsUeCQWvLGuIZJ73hF is the same as the Asus Vivobook you talk about in the video at number 5? I did try clicking the link in the video and for the UK it is saying currently out of stock

Hey! So i plan to major in Civil engineering when i go to college. Any specific recommendations for laptops in the civil engineering field

  27. Reid Youle on August 20, 2021 at 10:36 pm

bruh, "buying a budget laptop… means in the long term your cpu and ram (memory) will run at 100%"
    thats just bullshit.
i had a absolute peice of shit. 4gb ram and a pentium processor. it didnt always run at 100% only when i did big tasks.
dont listen to a guy that is literally stuttering. if your going to do engineering get a *new* laptop with either a core i7 NOT i5 or go for any ryzen cpu (a ryzen 5 or ryzen 7. you definitely want at least 16gb ram. oh and get loads of storage. if your running a thin and light laptop for the long term, your gonna use so much storage.
so to sum up, get a laptop with a core i7 or ryzen 5 or ryzen 7 paired with at least 16gb ram with 1tb of storage. if you do any CAD work, you must have dedicated graphics otherwise wasted time will be your friend.

Thanks for the information, I’m studying Architecture, and I would like to know what’s The best option for designing large OR small projects? so that I do not have to change it throughout the study period . I will use programs like AUTO_ CAD, SketchUp, 3dmax and also Lumion, V-Ray for renders, I’ll be looking forward to your answer.
my maximum budget could be $ 1250 . I have already Laptop dell G5 15 5590 , it’s for gaming already so is it good for architecture student or i should change it ? My problem is that this laptop is very heavy, and I think if there was a lightweight laptop, it would be better, and I am now in my first year in studying architecture, so I am confused. I hope you will help to choose the appropriate laptop .

  43. Giuseppe Nativo on August 20, 2021 at 10:55 pm

This list matches the needs of first year engineering students. They are good just for Cad but not for Bim. You don’t want to buy a windows machine to code.
With ask the respect, i think you know nothing about talk computers for engineers. You didn’t even proposed the Dell 3530, that is entry level machine, a bit garbage but his enough for students.
