Smart project but done completely wrong. Microwaves works on water. Chocolate contains about 0% water, so it can’t get warm. Your microwaves warmed water in air and because air got hot it melted your chocolate. It didn’t harm your bars but if you were to close it could seriously hurt YOU. Next time you should use something what contains water like fruit, mashed potatoes of other food. Hope you kept your open machine and you can do it once again.

You are assuming that the microwaves expand in a circle. They are not. there are hot and cold spots Quit guessing. Buy an electromotive force meter. They cost about $20. The waves are directed by internal "horns’ That’s why there is a spinning plate in ’em.

I think you did the math wrong. Assuming the power spreads out evenly as a half sphere, you’ll need ~179cm (6 ft) to get a half sphere of over 200,000 cm^2, which you need to divide that 1,000,000mW over to get below 5mW/cm^2. A=2*pi*r^2. And that’s assuming you wouldn’t have more power in some directions than in others, but you probably do. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Your last comment… "interfered with electronics". Microwaves run at 2.4ghz which is the exact same frequency as home WiFi. So you created a big WiFi jammer :-). The reason why WiFi does not cook you is because WiFi runs at very very low power (about 0.01 of a watt), when microwave ovens run at 850 to 1000 watts.
On a nice cloudless sunny day, a square meter is getting about 1000w of energy just from the sun. If you concentrate that down, such as with a fresnel lens, you see similar behavior as heating with a 1000w microwave. Advantage of the microwave oven is that it keeps the waves inside allowing them to bounce around making multiple potential passes through sensitive molecules (such as water) before they completely dissipate.
You guys should find a physicist to give science explanations to the work you do.

What would happen if you put metal in a door less microwave?
You need to use things that have a water content much higher than chocolate. Microwaves work best with things that have water in them, it vibrates the molecules and warms it up. Of course you could still use chocolate or other things like that, but I guarantee you’d get a better result if you used something else entirely
That won’t work with microwaves now because their manufacturers made them smart enough to know that their door is open if you attempt to start the microwave up without closing the door

I’m pretty sure the water vapor in the air is absorbing all those microwaves. Because that’s how a microwave is designed, right? To match the resonant frequency of water. So basically you warmed up the room 🤔 maybe do it again with a thermometer

Hopefully, you guys didn’t damage some of those cells that are stored for reproduction. If you had a multiple EMF strength meters about the room, you both would have left the house. Even with the microwave door closed EMF readings exceed comfortable limits while standing in front of the microwave. If you do not believe me, get a strength meter and try it. Gives new meaning to women cooking eggs for breakfast if you get my drift.
