Equipment Review: Toaster Ovens

Equipment Review: Toaster Ovens

The uses for a toaster oven go way beyond making toast. A good toaster oven functions as a small second oven, and can even take the place of your big oven—it can handle a 4-pound chicken or bake potatoes or a batch of cookies, and it preheats faster, uses less energy, and is easy to clean.

Thank you. What a nice Video. I would like that oven. I do not have any Coupons. Would be so nice to get a reduction in price.

Can anyone please tell me why the best kitchen review series of the last couple of decades has never tested the most important tool in any American kitchen…… the oven….??? (Not a toaster oven, I’m talking about a full size oven, gas or electric) they’ve never done it….

  3. rpols22 on March 7, 2021 at 12:52 am

Btw, I do have the previous model of this breville toaster oven. It is everything they say it is. Hands down the best toaster oven I have ever owned and I would buy it again in a heartbeat. One thing to remember though…. as good as this is, it is not a traditional oven and do not use it as such. You will wear it out. Its fine for the occasion small roast chicken or frozen french frys, tator tots, etc. But do not use this to cook things you would/should in a traditional oven on a regular basis. It will fail on you as mine did. My wife use to cook things that had long cook times (in my opinion, long cook times for a toaster oven constitutes anything at or around 20 minutes) almost daily. I think the high temps and long cook times fried the circuit board cuz the oven setting doesn’t work anymore. Toaster setting still works great but the roast/bake setting is inoperable.

I wish I saw this video before I bought my toaster
We replaced our 10yr old Black & Decker toaster with a new Black & Decker one but it is worse than the old one
    I am so mad

  5. paul torres on March 7, 2021 at 12:55 am

Excellent review. I have the top rated Breville and I agree 100% with the review. It is an excellent toaster oven. However, I am on my second unit in 8 years. After 4 years, the control board failed on the first one. On my current one, the start button requires two to three pushes to start. When this one fails, I doubt I’ll get another Breville, not at $280.

Will their be any review on countertop convectipn 🤔oven with air fryer within the current year? My brother will be buying one, this review was not including air fryer

  7. ArkansasBadBoy on March 7, 2021 at 12:57 am

This is basically a full-on countertop oven and is far and away the best. Not one single time have ATK reviews let me down.

  8. Arizona John on March 7, 2021 at 12:58 am

Ya but what are the brands? And these fancy ovens are in the hundreds

  9. o0Avalon0o on March 7, 2021 at 12:58 am

Beautifully done! I love how you didn’t just tell us all the things you did but showed it too, so we’d better understand.

    WOW! Great info, thank you!

  11. dtimboggs on March 7, 2021 at 12:59 am

I have had two brevilles. Both had even heat for about 6 months. Then the heat from the broiler element became uneven

  12. Layarion on March 7, 2021 at 12:59 am

Can you review Zakarian’s air fryer? i suspect it won’t pass some of the test in this video. I have it, and tbh i feel like i’ve been scammed.

  13. Heather Knapp on March 7, 2021 at 1:00 am

Can a convection toaster oven like the black and decker one bake small cakes, brownies or cookies?

  14. amazon amazon on March 7, 2021 at 1:00 am

    OMG
you guys are so thorough on everything
    we love you

I know this is about a year old, but I did see your recent (Aug 2020) ATK online review of “air-fryer” toaster ovens and the Breville Smart Over Air was your winner. However that oven has gotten some pretty negative reviews on their web site (and Williams-Sonoma) for leaking grease, smoke and condensation happing around the controls, some the buttons and fails sticking, and the oven’s fuse failing.
I hope you can go back and review these toaster ovens with the air-fryer function (the Breville, Cuisinart, Ninja Foodie, etc.) and really put them through their paces. Being they range from $300-$400 that is a huge investment.
BTW: I have a15 year old Aroma Toaster oven that still performs as well as when I first used it, but I’m doing research for when it finally quits. Thanks ATK!!!!

I feel like the Breville/Sage brand has some really good stuff

  18. Simon99 on March 7, 2021 at 1:05 am

    It’s too big.

  19. Marc Millet on March 7, 2021 at 1:07 am

I have a Breville. I love it. The only time I use the wall oven is when I am baking an item on a large pan that requires that space.

  20. Trevor Greenbank on March 7, 2021 at 1:08 am

    $772 CAD 🤣😂🥲🤮

  21. Alex on March 7, 2021 at 1:11 am

Doe’s ATK review a microwave & toaster oven combo?

  22. RC66 on March 7, 2021 at 1:14 am

I think the best buy is now $215 on Amazon.

I have one of these ovens and like it very much but not for toast it dries out the bread like eating cardboard

  25. Alex S on March 7, 2021 at 1:23 am

Thank you so much for this review. I have been committing all sorts of sins with my simple little toaster… it’s officially time for this upgrade!

  26. D.R. W on March 7, 2021 at 1:24 am

Bought the Breville – love it!

  27. Little Huey on March 7, 2021 at 1:24 am

You need to make a variety of categories for these ! Cause your parameters aways show the rolls Royce models ! You need to show them by size ,price and usage . Like I want one that primarily used to reheat small items and cook sandwiches. Others may want one that can bake pastries or cookies in smal to medium batches, and then there are the ones you showed here that want a secondary oven ! This would be a lot more helpful to the general audiences! But over all good stuff !

  28. T Sav on March 7, 2021 at 1:25 am

I have an old manual GE that takes longer to cook thicker meats but does a good job with fish fillets etc. About 15 yrs old and use often so got my monies worth. Use more than my regular oven.

  29. Mark Terzigni on March 7, 2021 at 1:26 am

Use the convection feature on that Breville and then get back to us…. Lot’s of reviews showing how it breaks or gets really noisy.

  30. Anthony Hawkins on March 7, 2021 at 1:26 am

Who actually makes toast in a toaster oven? Why not just use a "toaster"? Geez

  31. Bob Rogers on March 7, 2021 at 1:28 am

I buy odd-sized bread, so I toast in my Cuisinart toaster oven a lot. I also bake and reheat foods that do not spatter, since cleaning the inside of an oven isn’t just wiping it away. Microwaves do a terrible job of cooking/heating proteins, and the toaster oven does it well.

  32. nancy maddux on March 7, 2021 at 1:29 am

We ordered and LOVE our Breville.

  33. K Hervé on March 7, 2021 at 1:29 am

This was a scientific review, best ever for any product i have ever watched

  34. Elva Estrada on March 7, 2021 at 1:30 am

I have an Oster. No complaints on the cooking part, BUT the grill is dangerous. When you go to pull it out, it just slides out too easy. If you have someting cooking on it, the whole thing can fall out ! Have had too many close calls. Wish grill had some kind of stopper.

  35. Kyle Wagner on March 7, 2021 at 1:32 am

Outstanding review, great information, and you pointed out a lot of features I hadn’t considered. Thank you!

  36. Joe Reynolds on March 7, 2021 at 1:32 am

I tend to do a lot of research before making a purchase out of fear of regretting the purpose. That fact that you go through, what I would call, very extensive testing puts my mind at ease and is greatly appreciated. The video also conveys the information effectively and concisely. I will be making it a point to check out the channel whenever I am considering a purchase in my kitchen in the hopes that you have covered the item I am looking to buy. Thank you for the effort that has gone into this video.

That toaster over is 270 bucks. Sheesh!

  38. Kip Paseo on March 7, 2021 at 1:34 am

I have a Kenmore elite convection toaster oven that I use almost daily. I love its accuracy and functionality but after almost 6 years of heavy heavy use the digital display is starting to go out little-by-little. Even more sadly Kenmore recently discontinued all of their toaster ovens So I keep scanning eBay For a replacement.

  42. Jenny Maywood on March 7, 2021 at 1:38 am

Would love it if you did a review on all the new toaster ovens with the air fryer option.

  43. D Wall on March 7, 2021 at 1:39 am

I have owned a Waring for 10 years and had zero problems.

  44. francine corry on March 7, 2021 at 1:39 am

I own one of these Breville ovens but the setting that works really well which wasn`t covered is the bagel setting that toasts only the top cut part of the bagel, perfect every time.Well worth the $$ btw also has convection.

  45. Ken S on March 7, 2021 at 1:40 am

I bought the number one rated oven they recommended and yes, it’s a good oven BUT! and this may not be important or it may apply to all of them but mine gets VERY VERY hot on the outside. I moved it to a part of my counter top where i’m not liable to accidently touch it but just know (and again, this may apply to ALL toaster ovens but had I have known how hot this thing gets on the outside I wouldn’t have bought it. Oh well..

  46. Peter Bradshaw on March 7, 2021 at 1:42 am

They didn’t test the one I have, the Wolf Gourmet, – I’m sure it would take top honors. But it’s nearly $700. And it’s big enough to fit a 13 x 9 dish, or six slices of bread. And it weighs almost 50 lbs. Also has a temp probe. Make sure you buy one with convection, and get the biggest one you can find. I use my Wolf counter top oven a LOT more than I use my Bosch wall oven. Oh – the Wolf has a five year warranty, the Breville one year, and some others might be 90 or even 30 days.

  47. Dan Sanger on March 7, 2021 at 1:43 am

I’ve had my Breville for ten years, and it’s the only oven I use. It’s big enough cook full size pies and pizzas, and do it well, but small enough to heat up super fast. The convection fan still works. The only thing that’s gone wrong is that the spring that pulls up the door broke. Supposedly, it’s not hard to fix, but I haven’t bothered since it works fine without it. Toast is good, but still not quite as good as a dedicated toaster. I don’t think any toaster oven is.

  48. paul Hicks on March 7, 2021 at 1:44 am

I was given one. I soon realized it was just yet another kitchen gadget I just didn’t need and took up precious bench or cupboard space so I junked it. It just didn’t cook as well as a proper oven so why use it? BTW, my new rule is if Jacques Pepin doesn’t use one then neither do I.

  49. JnetCalo on March 7, 2021 at 1:47 am

America’s Test Kitchen forever and ever amen!

  50. Chuck Ransdell on March 7, 2021 at 1:48 am

The Breville is a piece of junk! I bought one based on this review and sure enough, 22 months into ownership the convection fan has stopped working and it cannot be fixed by the owner. Although, the wonderful folks at Breville will repair my unit for the approximate amount it would take me to buy a whole new unit. Brilliant! I checked on line and many owners have this same built in obsolescence problem with the fans.
