Does The Shearwater Peregrine Measure Up? 4 Dive Computers Under $500. Which should you choose?

Yesterday, Shearwater Research announced their entry into the recreational dive computer market with the Shearwater Peregrine. I watched the live stream release and I was… whelmed. Meh. So I thought I’d find three other dive computers for under $500 and compare features… the Suunto D4i Novo, the Aqualung i470TC and the ScubaPro Aladdin A1.

We’re looking at cost; color display; nitrox capabilities; watch factor; air integration; Bluetooth; Power Supply and Algorithm. I’ll tell you what I like in each category and which of these dive computers measure up.

At the end, I reveal my pick for a recreational dive computer under $500.

I know! A Friday video! Crazy, right! I’ll see you all on Monday! Have a great weekend.

For me, color display isn’t so important as a larger display. The other item you didn’t mention is how intuitive the menu system is. I have limited experiences with different dive computer brands having first used a Suunto Mosquito (junk), then a Zoop (lousy) and finally found the Uwatec Galileo (awesome) and haven’t looked back since. However, with the Suunto and the Zoop, I found the menuing system to be completely incomprehensible. The thing I like about the Galileo is the menus work more like modern devices. From my friends who all own Shearwater they say the same thing about their computers.

Mares Quad Air… Is my choice… big minus is the lack of Bluetooth and digital compass on the plus side is the big display (for my tired eyes and I don’t need a diving computer as a watch)

  3. Dan Gammie on March 23, 2021 at 12:56 am

Love your video!! but i say just buck up and buy the perdix. Than buy the peregrine, if you want that aswell. If you can’t afford it than work harder, your buying dive gear, the best thing to do with your money!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Doug's Messy Garage on March 23, 2021 at 12:58 am

Thanks for this video James, I am just starting into the scuba world and it was a great comparison to help me narrow down my dive computer purchase.

  5. Douglas Brown on March 23, 2021 at 12:59 am

As you talked about digital dive logs, which I also use (2020 and all), how did you select your digital log? I was diving a couple of different computers depending on gear and trip so I went for a log that can work with both. How did you pick yours?

  6. Scuba Tom on March 23, 2021 at 1:01 am

A lot of the time I don’t pay attention to a lot of reviews due to companies giving the product to them. Not necessarily scuba equipment.

  7. Gunner Waldmann on March 23, 2021 at 1:01 am

Mr. James… Can U recommend a rec dive Wrist Computer..I’m getting older.. my eyes are getting older… Im been using the Mares Puck Pro.. Id like a wrist computer with the largest numbers on the face. Maybe a colored background???I have a $400-500 budget.

  8. Caleb Mcelhaney on March 23, 2021 at 1:02 am

James, what app do you use to log your dives?

  9. Bill on March 23, 2021 at 1:03 am

Hey James, I messaged Atmos, and they said you wanted to charge them too much for a review……

I’m sorry but is your dog malting? I couldn’t help but notice all the hairs on your shirt 🙂

The perfect watch for tropical vacation diving: James white dial Citizen Aqualand👌

  12. Brian Whitney on March 23, 2021 at 1:07 am

James. Recently got introduced to the scuba world loving it ready to go in on my first computer. Was thinking about the Atmos mission one. Anything thoughts or insight on this computer any help would be appreciated love the channel

  13. Gage Rasmussen on March 23, 2021 at 1:07 am

wish these videos would actually show the function of the computer rather than trying to sell me one. I would be more inclined to purchase a computer if I could compare the funcionalitly of different computers rather than comparing "dick size"

not just this chanel but all dive shop chanel’s need to step their game up on that aspect.

  14. m Bryant on March 23, 2021 at 1:07 am

Love your comparison, however one thing i disagree with is the battery, you said OH you show up on your dive boat and your battery is dead!!!. Honestly if you are not smart enough to charge your damn computer, or get a new battery, or check your battery before you go, then you deserve to miss out on the dive. Just my thoughts

  15. michael g on March 23, 2021 at 1:08 am

So I am a recreational diver who is interested in doing tec diving. Would you recommend the peregrine if I am mostly going to be doing recreational dive but may do a tec 40 course in the next year or two?

  16. John Montgomery on March 23, 2021 at 1:11 am

If the shearwater does not have ai capabilities, does that mean you need a separate spg. I would assume that a hose doesn’t connect to the computer

  17. Martin Blanchard on March 23, 2021 at 1:12 am

Looked up the Auqalung and it looks like you have to also buy a separate $399-$425 AI transmitter (which makes sense of course). Ouch. Do I understand that correctly? If so, that completely changes the price point discussion.

  20. Josh Alms on March 23, 2021 at 1:15 am

I was surprised that you didn’t weight AI as nearly the top factor for recreational AI. I really appreciate that you explain why and how you form an opinion. Highly educational and as unbiased of a review as I have seen. Thanks

  21. Robert Hartley on March 23, 2021 at 1:16 am

Wish the Peregrine had a compass.

  22. Bubbles and Boats on March 23, 2021 at 1:16 am

Great review, really enjoyed that. Only problem is now I’ve realized how out of date my current computer is. Time to do some gear shopping again!!

  23. J Albert on March 23, 2021 at 1:17 am

Great vid may consider the peregrine as a cheaper backup to my perdix. I was looking at the aqua lung before and now I am not sure.

  24. Wayne Sitarz on March 23, 2021 at 1:17 am

Diving for 30 years. Still using a Suunto Companion after many years. Got a TUSA Imprex copy of the Companion in case the Companion fails, but it’s still going with only 1 battery change. Basic and reliable. Suunto Zoop if I had to buy another one.

  25. nyconti on March 23, 2021 at 1:19 am

When students ask for a computer recommendation, I have say a Perdix. It is simple and easy to use on top of so many other loves. New divers are taken back by the price, so I’m excited by this. I think it’s a great recommendation for entry level divers who aren’t ready to invest in the more expensive models.

Where do you Log your Dives?

  27. CHETHAN B on March 23, 2021 at 1:23 am

I am chethan from India, nice information video, sir can u suggest me a best dive computer in aqualung under $500 , I choose this bcoz i have only aqualung dealer near my home town( around 500km) .pls.. (i450t vs i470tc vs i200c vs i300c)I have done 10 dives and counting… I am planning for advance courses also…

  28. jochem groen on March 23, 2021 at 1:24 am

I bought the peregrine and used it the last 2 weeks in bonaire, very happy with it, easy to read and the log sync to the app works great! Battery lasts a long time (charge it in the evening and you never go wrong, had a battery pack in my kit that can charge it 20 times when on a boat)

  29. giopuma on March 23, 2021 at 1:24 am

The AI comparison is partially flawed for the simple reason that you have to add $300 to the base price for the transmitter, which puts the two AI computers way outside of the budget. A fairer statement would be "at $500 no DC has AI, two of them are compatible for expansion after shelling out an additional $300"

  30. Neil Quinn on March 23, 2021 at 1:25 am

I’d also put it up against the new Atmos Mission ONE which can be had for ~ $300 on sale. Color screen, buhlman, custom gradient factors, no AI. Also seems odd to compare it to a bunch of watch-style computers with no color screens, one of the obvious differentiators.

  31. Karim Haridi on March 23, 2021 at 1:25 am

Good morning I have a old Cressi Leonardo dive computer and I want to change it, what do u think about Mares Genius with led Transmitter?? Is it a good choice ?

  32. Joe Welsh on March 23, 2021 at 1:26 am

Hi James. When my Vyper Air finally let me down, I bought the Aqualung i770R. It looks very similar to the Peregrine with colour screen, has Bluetooth and I got a deal that effedtively got me a transmitter free of charge. Needed the bigger screen as my eyes are not what they used to be.

  33. Wayne Hall on March 23, 2021 at 1:30 am

Why didn’t you toss the Atmos Mission One in the mix? I’m really torn now between the Peregrine (brand reputation) and the Mission One (many more features, but new kid on the block)

  34. skzion2 on March 23, 2021 at 1:32 am

Hi James. The issue with the Aqualung is that, yes, it’s AI, but a transmitter is about $400 extra. That’s no longer in the targeted price range.

  35. Angel Mountain Scuba on March 23, 2021 at 1:32 am

Great information James! Could you possibly do a comparison video with the Shearwater Perdix AI vs Aqua-Lung I770r. Both are priced comparatively. I’ve seen reviews on both individually but not both head to head. Pros and cons of rechargeable vs replacing batteries, etc. Which I remember you saying 9 out 10 dive instructors prefer to replace batteries. Lol Trying to decide on my next level computer for tech diving. Maybe you don’t have to do a video but just some advice. Thank you.

  36. Scuba4Families on March 23, 2021 at 1:33 am

I have dived with the Suunto Viper for 22 years but need to finally upgrade…was a good watch and loved it. What would you recommend for a higher budget?

  37. Michael Galietti on March 23, 2021 at 1:34 am

James, forgot to inform that the transmitters for most are a separate. And this does add to the expense. Newbie and love the vlogs!!

  38. leah yeahnah on March 23, 2021 at 1:36 am

Well thank you for this video! I loved the look of the peregrine, loved the price in comparison to the teric which would probably be my next choice – but didn’t even realise it didn’t have AI. No deal for me.

  39. IreneWY on March 23, 2021 at 1:37 am

A laptop without USB? What kind of abomination is that… How would one charge the phone?!

  40. Cheetheng Lee on March 23, 2021 at 1:37 am

Hey James, what about the mission one Atmos? seems to be competing at the price range of Suunto D4i Novo.

And I’d love to one day hear your explanations and takes on the gas model and bubble model algorithms… cheers

  41. Johny dela Cruz on March 23, 2021 at 1:38 am

Direct to topic.. too many intro

  42. Darrell Grainger on March 23, 2021 at 1:39 am

I like to have multiple Nitrox settings because all the local dive shops fill your tank with any percentage of oxygen. I plan my dives and know the depths. So I’ll bring a mix of different gases. I might have a 3 day dive with EAN28, EAN34 and EAN37. So it is nice to have them all programmed into the dive computer the night before. During the dives I’ll switch my gas setting as I switch my tanks. It just nice to have.

I, also, am not wild about non-user replaceable batteries. WAY better than checking the battery level the night before and charging the computer. I just dive it until it tells me the battery is low. On the next surface interval I switch the battery. This is why I use a Perdix and not a Teric.

  43. Elliot Beerline on March 23, 2021 at 1:40 am

Pergerine is perfect. I’d rather glance at my spg than spend $399 (almost the price of the computer itself) to have air integration.

  44. BOHICA Nation on March 23, 2021 at 1:41 am

You don’t even need to start down the list and I will knock off anything without a user serviceable battery.

  45. Alex Gikiere on March 23, 2021 at 1:42 am

Something I’ve seen I’ve seen other review channels do is have a Patreon. the money from the backers is used to buy equipment to be reviewed, which helps you stay independent of your review and no way of having a "paid endorsement", and then the equipment is given to a random patreon supporter. Just an idea. Newly certified diver and new subscriber.

  46. gary T'to on March 23, 2021 at 1:42 am

Adding a transmitter to one of the AI computers adds $300-$400 dollars to the price so then we are comparing a $450 purchase to an over $800 purchase when comparing to the Peregrine. Quite a difference. For what it is worth, I am a dive instructor in Thailand. Dove for 5 years with a AI setup (and a backup SPG) before the transmitter stopped working. Since then I have used an SPG. For me the difference is minimal. Enjoyed the video though!

  47. sinetwo on March 23, 2021 at 1:44 am

    Whelmed 😂

  48. 757H2O on March 23, 2021 at 1:47 am

Thanks James. Great content. This really helps me with others concerned about price and their first computer. I have personally dove with the G2 on just shy of 300 hundred dives. I really like the ease of use but miss the larger screen of the Luna. I just recently started diving with the Scuba Pro HUD. It took 4 dives and I am now hooked. Thanks again for an awesome breakdown. Again, this will help in my recommendations at the $500 price point.

  49. Andrew R on March 23, 2021 at 1:47 am

If you had the category of been visible to older eyes, the shearwater would be leading the pack.

  50. Shun Tao on March 23, 2021 at 1:49 am

Good Analysis, Fair and just. You missed 1 category? Customer Service….. Of course Shearwater owns the one. Flip side, it does not change the end Result. I too would buy the i470tc as a Recreational Diver, of the 4 on your list. BUT WAIT……… You did forget the Atmos Mission One, no AI, but it does have GPS. Hands down the BEST recreational computer display on the market. (Let me know if you want to test it James, I can drop it off to you). Now lets be fair to the Non AI computers, I have meet a lot of divers with their own Dive Computer and not Regulator. So this is important, and Many dive shops will not put your transmitter on their Rental Gear.

Ok, so for me, I own the OCi (last generation of the i470tc), the atmos, a Teric and Petral 2. I teach and dive in a BP/w always, so I always have a spg. So, since Teaching is a lot of sunlight and up and downs, I decided to sell the OCi (on ebay now) and use the Mission One for Training sessions (the screen is that amazing), then back to Shearwater for check out dives 3-5 OW and all other diving. Of course the Atmos goes on all trips so I can steal those super secret dive site GPS coords. 🙂
