Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 Tiger Lake Review | 2021 Laptop/Tablet Hybrid Tested

Reviewing Dell’s XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop/tablet hybrid in 2021, with Tiger Lake smarts. I’ve been testing this flexible notebook for a fortnight following my review of the XPS 13 9310, just before we hit 2021. Here’s how the gaming performance, battery life and other bits hold up vs best rivals like the MacBook Air M1, if your budget stretches to that £1400 mark.

Dell’s 2-in-1 laptop boasts the latest Intel Gen 11 chipset for smooth everyday running and capable creative work. This is one of the best ultraportable notebooks around, and tough competition versus Apple’s new Macbook Air M1 (and even the Pro). It’s skinnier and lighter than those Mac laptops, with a flexible design that converts into a tablet. Although the keyboard isn’t as good as the XPS 13 9310, the display is another stunning Full HD LED panel. With full touch controls naturally.

The XPS 13 2-in-1 also offers respectable battery life, although vs the Macbook Air and Pro with Apple’s M1 platform it can’t quite compete. Check out my review of that Macbook Pro for all you need to know, and I’ve also fully tested Dell’s 931 here on Tech Spurt.

As a xps 13 2-1 user, the easiest way to deal with the dog shit page up/do keys is to download sharp keys and re bind them to the left and right arrows respectively. It’a a small thing but that 5 minutes it took to install has made a huge difference in my productivity. Great review!

    Is there a 15" 2 in 1 version of this ?

6:48 that is surprisingly my experience with a dell monitor. Usually happens in 10 minutes after turned on, and the black screen continues for more than a couple of seconds. I think Dell should go over its drivers.

  4. Robb Ryan on January 17, 2022 at 4:48 pm

I’m wondering if the "black screen" issue is related to drivers. As the Intel Iris Xe graphics is new, there could still be bugs in the drivers.

If you dont need the PageUp + PageDown keys that often you could use a key mapper (like Sharp Keys) and map PgUp to Left and PgDn to Right. To use PgUp + PgDn you could use Fn+PgUp etc.

Do you know if it can work overseas in term of ~220 to 240 voltage? Or it specified for 120 V and 60 Hz?

  13. Trig on January 17, 2022 at 5:05 pm

I was going to purchase a refurbished one of these yesterday. I had a XPS 13 back in 2010 which was permanently broken and crashed all the time.

Dell don’t seem to get the stability right on their top end machines as their rivals. Thanks for the honest reviews. Lots of feedback on the John Lewis site about the screens going blank and crashing too. I’ll avoid.

Any idea on a stable I7 36GB memory laptop? Dell latitude?

  15. Anand Suralkar on January 17, 2022 at 5:08 pm

    does it support pen tho?
thats most important question otherwise 2 in 1 form factor would be useless for many.

Did you get a anti-glare screen for it? It seems to not have that. I wonder if it affects the quality

  23. sbrahma2006 on January 17, 2022 at 5:16 pm

DON’T BUY XPS 9310 LAPTOP Series. This series has a screen flickering problem and all users are struggling with it and even Dell is not able to fix it. I have received my New laptop and it has screen flickering problem and Dell doesn’t know how to fix it. DON’T BUY XPS.

  24. Nonja Biznas on January 17, 2022 at 5:16 pm

This computer was the most expensive piece of garbage I’ve ever bought. Worked for less than a month and have had nothing but problems with it. Dell’s customer service is an absolute joke and did nothing to rectify the problem. They sent me a broken computer. Refused to refund me or send a replacement. Only people I could get on the phone were from india who barely spoke english. I literally just took a sledgehammer to it. Threw this piece of trash in the dumpster where it belongs. Fuck Dell and their shitty computers.

Getting really tired of you "YouTubers" reviews. Becomes apparent in an instant that the only thing you use the machine for is watching videos and surfing on YouTube. Only reason I even watched this was to look at the machine again, but no. You are to obsessed with filming yourself instead of the machine itself. 🙄 🤮

  31. M JP on January 17, 2022 at 5:28 pm

Hi, I’m currently using an old ipad pro which I love but , I’m need to change to a laptop something I can use for my studies but that is lightweight that I can still use my data sim in. I would preferable 2 in 1 that is fast but very capable for lots of different task.
    Can you suggest anything?

I’ve owned mine for a few months. Heavy daily user. Light gaming, heavy programming sessions with dual external displays using the Dell TB16 docking station. Fits nice in my 10in SOLO sling bag. Great machine.
