Cheap Office Chairs vs. Expensive Office Chairs

Cheap Office Chairs vs. Expensive Office Chairs

What’s the difference between a cheap office chair and an expensive one? In this video, we break down everything you need to know before deciding whether to save or splurge.

14,000 hours. If you have a full-time desk job, that’s the minimum amount of time you’ll spend sitting over the next 10 years. Add the nights you have to work late, the weekends you’re called into the office, and those unfortunate occasions you end up scarfing down lunch in front of your computer and the hour count only goes up from there.

We now know that any sustained ass-in-chair time can be detrimental to your health, but a bad chair only adds to the problem by putting you in positions that add to long-term risk. If you have a home office, finding a chair that makes your desk time more comfortable and better for your health is a worthwhile endeavor.

If it’s $200 and below don’t bother with it. It’ll break within a year and they don’t have any warranties. Meaning you’ll be dumping $100 on a chair yearly that won’t even be that comfortable.

Any good midrange chairs (like 300-400)

Did I just hear "cheap" and $200 dollar" in the same sentence??????

  13. Simon Electric on November 24, 2020 at 4:36 pm

More expensive chairs are not always the best. I purchased a chair for about $170 from Office Max for my home office. The most comfortable chair I’ve had in years. My expensive "ergonomic" chair, provided by my employer, lacked in seat cushioning and the lumbar support was quite rigid. I found myself having to stand every 2 hours because my tailbone ached. When buying a chair comfort and quality are always first priority. The lack of moving parts also allows less opportunity for mechanisms to break. Expense and quality are not always synonymous with one another. Just look for a sturdy build and plenty of comfort.

  14. EJM3 on November 24, 2020 at 4:36 pm

He says "Ultimately you want something that makes you feel comfortable and supportive… regardless of the price" tf, regardless of the price? First thing i look at is price, then ill worry about comfort and support. Not spending $500-$1000 on a chair. I think 180 is a lot for a chair

It’s real difficult chair shopping online if you’re looking for 200 – 400 range since so many fake reviews out there. Beware of those that start off with "OMG this is the best thing I ever used in my life" 99.999% fake.

  16. krankenheim13 on November 24, 2020 at 4:38 pm

I needed a good chair, wound up spending $200 because I didn’t want to spend more. Now I have a chair I absolutely hate and cannot use. It’s sitting behind me, my cat is on it. I should have trusted my gut feeling on this and bought the chair I wanted to begin with.

  17. KAR on November 24, 2020 at 4:40 pm

40 bucks chair get me no pain in anywhere and I received high end achievement from my life.

  22. Rick Derico on November 24, 2020 at 4:45 pm

Hello @Wirecutter, I’m having trouble deciding if i should buy a Steelcase Gesture with or without a headrest. I’ve never really rested my head on any office chair I’ve sat in before and frankly, i find the variant without the headrest (like the on in your video) much sleeker and cooler looking. However, it *might* end up being more comfortable… Any thoughts?

  23. Brehn The Magnificent on November 24, 2020 at 4:45 pm

    200$ is not cheap

    CHEAP chair 200$ 😮

  26. Sohail Hyderi on November 24, 2020 at 4:50 pm

If you guys think $200 is expensive then you haven’t really researched any ergonomic office chairs. I understand that without context $200 is a lot of money, but most good quality chairs are well North of $200. Having said that, most people DO NOT need to spend that much. But if you have issues with your back, legs, etc. it’s highly recommended to splurge a little. It’s an investment in yourself…much like a great bed. You’ll be spending 8 hrs a day in this thing….don’t be cheap or it’ll show up in your productivity and health.

  27. Jesus Adame on November 24, 2020 at 4:51 pm

I was gonna get a 200 dollar one because I thought thatd be like a good mid range then they call it budget….

  32. Sergiy Rudenko on November 24, 2020 at 4:54 pm

Do you know some good chair for under a hundred bucks? I don need all this ajustments. I just need a chair to stay in the same position, I have only one position which is comfortable, just seat straight.

  34. Arch on November 24, 2020 at 4:59 pm

I wouldn’t play around with quality

  35. jackthegamer on November 24, 2020 at 4:59 pm

hum, i’m literally sitting in a free chair from a junkyard, clean it and soon will turn it into a much more confortable chair with a car seat i used to drive alot,
in my honest opinion, just find the chair that is COMFY for you cause why would you need all those options if already you get what you wanted

  36. Brian Johnson on November 24, 2020 at 5:01 pm

Shouldn’t a computer chair have a head rest, so you can lean your head against it? I feel like my neck hurts after a couple of hours of PC usage…

  37. Olddirtytiger on November 24, 2020 at 5:03 pm

200 is cheap 👀 man I’m so poor

  38. Sonamor on November 24, 2020 at 5:04 pm

The thing that gets me, is that there is NO POSSIBLE WAY that a hunk of metal and fabric that you put your ass on should be worth 1000 dollars. Its a chair. There is no reason any stupid metal/plastic office chair should be over 200 dollars. Maybe if its a delicate finely crafted wooden artwork that took time, sweat, and the death of trees to build, but these office chair factories literally pump out hundreds of chairs an hour and charge thousands percent markup. Truly the scum of capitalism, up there with bankers and college textbook publishers.

  39. Gareth K Music on November 24, 2020 at 5:06 pm

Chair prices have shot up due to BS factor. $200 is not cheap. 1,000+ is for either people with severe disabilities or money to burn.

  40. Muhammad Arif on November 24, 2020 at 5:07 pm

I use a cheap 7" high and 3 feet wide wooden leg rest with my cheap chair. It does wonders to improve my level of comfort.

  41. mikelo303 on November 24, 2020 at 5:10 pm

I have expensive chair. 400 bucks. Better build quality? Yes a little. However cushion got hard after a year and now is like sitting on plank. Back material started ripping off (mesh) after 5 years), so overall it was not worth it. 6th year and it is going to trash. I will buy Ikea now and just get over with it.

Who is looking for a chair becasue if the covid-19?

  47. DungeonRunnerTank on November 24, 2020 at 5:21 pm

I feel poor when every video says that a $200 chair is cheap. I consider $100 or less a budget anything over is more expensive.

  48. thewewguy8t88 on November 24, 2020 at 5:24 pm

honestly i just need a chair that is comfortable to use while playing video games on a 55 inch tv.
