finding the perfect laptop for architects and architecture students in becoming more and more challenging every year. Especailly as we move from CPU to GPU software demands. Today we review my top 5 laptops for any architect or architecture student.

In no particular order.

1. the surface laptop 2-4 are epic. these devices are epic and can handle all the programs you might need to use.

2. macbook pro. as long as you get the right speced out version, you will be able to handle most of the architectural programs the world has to offer, you’ll just have to deal with slow render times

3. Dell XPS 13. This is a classic. But cheap and nasty. dont expect it to do everything or look the part.

4. MSI: purpose built cad stations. these definitely do not look pretty. As architects or future architects aesthetics are important. If for some reason they arent the answer is simple.

5. Thinkpad: very business forcused but there is a reason all business use it.

It would be more useful to tell on which Specs the buyer should focus on. To pick 5 Laptops out of hundreds doesn’t make any sense for me… So: Is a dedicated Graphics Card necessary for archiCAD? Should i focus on Single Core or Multi Threaded Performance of the CPU? What is the minimum amount of RAM you suggest?

I’m looking at getting a lenovo p51 for the beginning of architecture school this year. It have an i7 processor and quadro m1200 graphics processor with a 256gb of storage I’m wanting to upgrade that and add a 1tb hdd. I’m not sure if this will be enough and any help would be appreciated

  9. Vittoria on August 6, 2021 at 9:34 pm

I’m an architecture student and I can guarantee you that every laptop he mentioned is not good or overrated (except maybe for the msi). If you have a mac you cannot install Revit (unless you install windows). The microsoft and the dell xps (as well as lenovo) are sooo unnecessarily expensive. At the same price you can get a gaming laptop with a good nvidia

  10. Pedro Torres Guzmán on August 6, 2021 at 9:35 pm

What about a Macbook Air M1 16GB RAM 512SSD? Ive used gamer pcs all the way through my carreer, Alienware and MSI with similar specs. But this new M1 chips performance seem promissing. I know it has no fans but as i saw in many reviews the throttling doesnt seem to affect that much.

  15. JULIA Buli-e on August 6, 2021 at 9:40 pm

Hey man! I was wondering if you could do an in depth review about the surface laptop using architecture programs, such as revit or cad. I’m really considering buying it but there are no videos or information about it at all 😭

  16. Bhavitha Chennupati on August 6, 2021 at 9:42 pm

Is surface laptop 4 useful for render softwares like vray , enscape, lumion , 3ds max and indesign ?

  17. Tesla Porn on August 6, 2021 at 9:43 pm

What you really need to focus on is the specs and cooling system.

Architectural work uses more of your processor and ram than your graphics card.
So the higher the core count the faster it can execute commands within your softwares (and on multiple programs) and the bigger projects it can handle.
However another thing you need to focus on is cooling. The more demanding the task the higher the cpu/cores activity and the more the heat generated so if the system is not built to cool the components in it properly it will slow down the performance, thereby negating the need for that much core count.
In other words, buy a gaming laptop like Alienware or ASUS ROG or ACER PREDATOR.
They have 8(octa) cores and above
    16gb ram +
And are properly cooled for extended usage while maintaining peak performance.

mate, im currently 16 years old and for now i intend to study mechanical engineering when i finish high school, but i needed a laptop now for studies (school and a technician car mechanic course, for which i guess i will not need any graphics performance). im wondering if i already make the investment on a reasonably spec’ed laptop (like, maybe a nitro 5 i5-9300h or ryzen 5 3550h with a gtx1650 or a lenovo ideapad l340 gaming with the same i5 but a gtx1050, cause these are the types of laptops id be able to stretch) so that when i enter college i will not have to worry about that, however, im afraid of it being too early to make such a big investment whilst i wont get the most out of it due to the fact that i will not be running (or as far as im concerned, wont need to) any type of 3d software like revit or autocad. instead, im thinking of buying a 14 inch aspire 5 with just an integrated gpu or a 15.6 inch one with an 15 10th gen and an mx250 to get me through high school and maaaaaybe scratch the surface at college with these softwares, as they would barely or not run at all
sorry for the long text but id love to know your opinion, do i wait to buy a more powerful one for college and buy a simpler one for now? and if were to buy a more powerful laptop, would those i mentioned above (nitro 5 and lenovo l340 gaming) be enough for 2-3 years from now?
    cheers from brazil 🇧🇷

Hi , i just saw your video and wanted to ask you sth . I have bought a laptop – Dell inspiron 15 7000 2in1 i5 8GB ram / 512 Gb . I bought it last year when i was in highschool and i didn’t know i was going to study urban architecture because i wasn’t sure . Is this laptop good for me for studying or did i waste my money ?
I hope you see my comment 🙏🏻

  20. Mathew on August 6, 2021 at 9:50 pm

For any of you guys that are on a budget, DO NOT buy any of these on the list, except the MSI one. Rendering requires a good graphic card. Therefore, the MSI has the best one. If you’re on a budget of 700-100 dollars, I really recommend any of the asus Tuf or the acer nitro line ups. They have enough ram, easy to upgrade, plus the 1050-1650ti would do the job better than any of the macbook products

  21. Biggie Boii on August 6, 2021 at 9:51 pm

Don’t get the XPS13 autocad kept shutting down due to its graphic card not to being up to scratch to handle the program

  22. ElmoRa on August 6, 2021 at 9:52 pm

    thanks bro

  28. Janelle Dela Roca on August 6, 2021 at 9:59 pm

I’m planning on buying the Surface Laptop 4, but I was wondering if the size of the screen matters? Would you recommend a 13.5" or a 15" screen for archi? Thanks so much :))

  29. Alexandra Levy on August 6, 2021 at 10:00 pm

Hello David, do you think getting a laptop with 13.5 inches a bad idea? I will not be buying a desktop.

  30. Niresh Shrestha on August 6, 2021 at 10:05 pm

Hey David….I am in Perth and currently studying Civil Engineering…..
Which laptop is best to buy currently for Engineering🤔
    Can u please recommend… Thank u

  31. AKTINODIAGNOSI BACKUP on August 6, 2021 at 10:08 pm

For architectural stuff you need at least RTX level graphics. Quadro would be the ideal but they are quite expensive

  32. Christy John on August 6, 2021 at 10:09 pm

Hey how is asus xflow 13 a 2 in 1 laptop
    32 gb ram

Despite the prices, between Microsoft Surface Book 3 and Surface Laptop 3, which one is the better choice for architecture design? I am in urgent need of a new laptop… someone please give me advice

  41. Tesla Porn on August 6, 2021 at 10:13 pm

I’m an architect and I won’t recommend getting any of these laptops except the MSI…
However any good gaming laptop would outperform what’s on this recommended list in this video

  42. Debasmita Basu on August 6, 2021 at 10:15 pm

I am a biotechnology student, do I need a gaming laptop or a non-gaming one?

  43. Naxan Axeex on August 6, 2021 at 10:17 pm

Honestly, its better to buy a budget gaming laptop for around 800 to 1000 usd, even more so if you’re a student. They have a much better price to performance ratio and heat management comparet to the high end ultrabooks. Either way, why waste money if you’re gonna upgrade it in 3 years time.

  44. Shannon Benson on August 6, 2021 at 10:17 pm

What about the Alienware M15 Ryzen Edition R5? Thoughts, anyone? My daughter will be a first-year architecture student.
