UPDATE 1: Older Canon’s may work with the Web Utility software despite not being listed as compatible. Thanks @Zulf Photography

UPDATE 2: Reincubate Camo App + a USB cable improves the iPhone’s “webcam” footage substantially! https://reincubate.com/camo/

UPDATE 3: I got the Elgato cam link 😂. Super crisp, better than Canon’s Webcam software (which still looks great)

Below you’ll find *both* non-affiliate and affiliate links. Why? Because I’m making these videos for the love of it, and if you want to purchase through an affiliate link, I want that to be a choice! In case you don’t know: if you click on an affiliate link and buy something, the person posting the link earns a small commission (e.g., from Amazon) but the price to you is the same. If you’re wondering I’ve done with the affiliate income from my other 3 videos, I spent it on this video (lol).

* M50 has a smaller sensor than the EOS R which indirectly lessens bokeh. Gerard Undone explains https://bit.ly/3jsWZ9C

**Adapters needed: EF to EOS R; would not use this lens for the M50. Webcam shots from this vid used the Canon 50mm EF 1.4 but the 1.8 will give a ton of blur for a lot less $$. Studio shots used 35mm.

I was shocked when you said that’s your 4th video, congrats! I see you grew quite a bit since that was published too!

  7. Dr Jorge Reyna on September 23, 2021 at 11:44 pm

You are awesome Julie! I have the Bryo and definitely, it makes me look very professional on my zoom calls. If you want to record short videos and you don’t want to set up the hardcore equipment, plug into a Mac and Logitech capture supports 4K. I use the Bryo with a couple of YN300 Air lights and I got better results than the softboxes I used to have. I will say, never use the fake greenscreen feature on Zoom, it does look shocking, especially when you move a bit. Also, never use the fake bokeh on Zoom. Maybe I am biased as I do photography for 15 years. For Audio I use a POP Voice microphone, crystal clear! The only problem is that I forget that is stuck on my shirt and I tend to walk away after a zoom call and pull off the cable. I may break it soon. Keep the great work!

Thanks for the video, but I can’t believe that a M50 and EOS R looks so washed out even on 1080p on youtube. Are you sure you edited it right?

OMG best webcam review/tutorial EVER. Subscribed. My Anker WhatEver C300 arrives this evening but now I wonder if I should return it and get my Panasonic G85 and 25mm f1.7 working as my web cam?

I really don’t understand why we don’t have compact and easy to use DSLR-Like-Webcams. Especially in times of corona, where video calls are more important than ever.
There once was a a kickstarter project called "Z Cam E1", which was super compact and with some patience you got the thing for 350$ (+Lens). But somehow, they don’t produce it anymore.
These type of products are soooo overdue… please, companys, bring us decent professional webcams!

Very informative video! But one thing you didn’t mention is the 29 min 59 sec recording limit on the Canon camera’s. I’m looking for a camera to help a yoga teacher who has lessons running up to 90 mins.

  21. Adam on September 24, 2021 at 12:01 am

Who’d have guessed a sub $200 webcam would be bested by a $1,000+ mirrorless camera…

I come on this video to look for a webcam, but can’t stop looking at you, such a beauty ❤

  34. Peter A Edwards on September 24, 2021 at 12:14 am

I am surprised that you even got the Drivers for the PapaLook, I have one in a box somewhere as it never worked. My Laptop has a better webcam. The one I purchased would not work and the Chinese site was permanently offline. Just purchased an AoBoCo stream webcam and it is great on Live Feed. Just need to get it to record. Smartphones are a great webcam substitute and so are iPad’s or Tablets that support Camera functions. My Samsung A21s mobile phone has a better webcam and camera than the Apple 8 mobile phone.

5 videos and 32k subs, well done.. teach me that trick

  44. Ish Rashad on September 24, 2021 at 12:24 am

Wow. Julie, I was browsing around webcam reviews and landed on this one.
And not even halfway through it, there was no thinking twice, like Mr Dylan: Like? Check. Subscribe? Check.
Why? Because you have the most engaging and watchable presentation style I have seen in … sigh … a sea.. no … an ocean … of bright-eyed and bushy-tailed video presenters.
And that’s even before getting to your content, which is perfectly paced (PP’ing is big with me) and right on point.
And of course, right through this YT on cameras, I am looking at your own image and setup and thinking just how terrific it is. Great clarity, great lighting … and hallelujah .. no sound track drowning out your words, the domain of They Who Should Not Be Making Video of Any Ilk. Bless you for that.
Keep up the great work. You have a smile and conversational ease that draw one in. And will bring people back for more.
Now … where’s that video you’ve made on your own setup… (old guy, walks away mumbling to himself… fade to black)
👌 from Down Under in Oz. And as they say here… Onya!

  45. K Zawada on September 24, 2021 at 12:25 am

Thanks for this video. I’ve been on video calls with people from everywhere and I found 1 person with that amazing blur & was dying to know how they did it.

This video does such a great job at explaining. I wish you could have tested with Elgato HDMI to USB.

  46. jaguarguitar on September 24, 2021 at 12:25 am

    Hi Julie,
I am a photo enthusiast who needs to present live for an online event, and I’ve found your nice channel while researching my options for video camera equipment. My stills camera system is a Pentax K-1 II, which is relevant because it absolutely sucks in terms of video, with no way to stream from it other than through non-clean HDMI output. I also have a sizable collection of manual focus full frame prime lenses (because my hobbyist stills needs were satisfied by those). On one hand, I would like the video to not suck, so I need to film it with something I currently don’t have. On the other hand, the conference is a one-time thing, so I don’t really want to splurge and invest too much in a second camera system. So my options are basically either to get something cheap but good enough that will then sit in a drawer, or splurge after all on something which I can integrate with the system I already have (Pentax K & M42 lenses), and for which I can try to find a purpose later (like mount to my trinocular microscope for soldering, a la Louis Rossmann). What do you think, how far to go?

  47. MAHAPRASAD NANDA on September 24, 2021 at 12:27 am

where are you and why aunt you making videos

  48. Paulo on September 24, 2021 at 12:30 am

Great video. Congrats. Would it be a good idea to use an iPhone 11 Pro Max or iPhone 12, Pro Max, as the external camera instead? And what about the Logitech ScreenCam?

  49. Michael Autry on September 24, 2021 at 12:33 am

Just subbed I can see how hard you have worked on this video! 1 more subscriber on your road to 1M, yay 😁
