Top cabinets really aren’t that hard to install. When we did our last kitchen, we installed the lowers, then built a box as tall as our backsplash. We put the box on the lower, then the upper on the box, shimmed like you shim the lowers, then screw into the wall. Some systems are even easier and use a cleat system. You level and screw the cleat into the wall (usually a 1” tall aluminum track), then the cabinet hangs off the cleat. You usually have to add a few more screws after hanging the cabinet on the cleat, but it stabilizes it enough that you can let go and use both hands to screw it in. You also don’t need to level it with shims, since the cleat is already level.

No. 1, I’ve never seen that problem? All the homes I go to including mine have the cabinet flush with the front of the fridge, so easy to reach. I don’t think kitchen designers are that stupid? Great tip on overhang and fridge 🙂

This is the most informative post – great job – full of informative details that one must know before starting.

the reason over the fridge is only 12" D so it won’t pull off the wall……. so yes unless you put a panel you should only put 12" D above fridge

  9. madusonkeeper on August 10, 2021 at 10:02 pm

Say no to open shelves!! Especially next to where you are frying!

  10. Texas Wyldcat on August 10, 2021 at 10:03 pm

How are those shelves doing with the cat I see on the couch there? Looks like a great place for it to walk and knock stuff off of.

  11. S D on August 10, 2021 at 10:05 pm

This was awesome, so informative. Theonly thing I would add trim around the window to help with the transition from tile to the wall above it.

Love the info except suggesting amazon instead of hardware store. I feel we need to be careful of not supporting our local businesses

Kitchen from IKEA only and fridge and freezer build in. Open shelving is nice but so demanding for cleaning as whatever you put there will get dusty.

The countertop overhang is such an important point. I have young children who make an endless mess. In our last rental I was constantly opening the drawers wipe then out after a spill.

I don’t like open shelving though. I live in a dusty desert area. Even our bookcases have glass doors to prevent dust. The kitchen is worse with the greasiness and steam.

  18. Sophanara Chay on August 10, 2021 at 10:11 pm

Open shelving is pretty but you need to put pretty things on it. If you have kids or live with teenagers you can say adios to your pretty plates and glasses.

  19. Dear Miss K on August 10, 2021 at 10:12 pm

Flush countertops make it very difficult to catch the crumbs in one hand as you’re wiping with the other hand. The overhang let’s you place your hand in such a way as to be able to wipe all the little bits & pieces of stuff and then easily catch it all to throw it away. Know what I mean?

If you plan on installing a built in mini refrigerator, make sure the manufacturer has rated that specific model for such an installation. Many mini refrigerators are intended for use as standalone in open areas, and as such aren’t rated to be used under a counter.

Purchasing your draw/cupboard handles from Amazon instead of the local hardware is an OK idea. But I went one step further and purchased from the distributor. I live in a rural community and one of the workers at the local hardware complained because I wasn’t buying much there for my home build. I told him he was charging three times what I paid for drawer handles. He said “we have to pay transport for stuff” to which I responded “and you charge me delivery. The distributor (Wilson and Bradley) delivered for free!”
“But they’re wholesalers,” blustered hardware store man. “Like I give a fuck,” was my response. Wilson and Bradley also sold me high quality European draw components that made making drawers a doddle compared to fabricating them. The sales rep at the wholesaler also gave me several ideas to think about that ultimately made my kitchen work much better.

Any tips on kitchen faucet choices? They come in all price ranges and shapes.

  26. Silver fox Homestead on August 10, 2021 at 10:29 pm

I like most of the ideas but not buying more crap from B&L-I mean Amazon. They are putting other small businesses out of business with their economies of scale. And their cheap products that break quickly or were stolen ideas from other companies.

No upper cabinets is fine if all you care about is the kitchen as display area. But for most of us, the kitchen is a work area for food preparation and service. Upper cabinets are, for the most part, much easier to use than base cabinets, and provide much needed storage that base cabinets cannot provide by themselves. Standard depth upper cabinets, being more more shallow than base cabinets, keep items more in view and easier to reach. While open shelving has its place, most of us have items that aren’t really great to look at that we’d prefer to to keep behind doors

  28. Elle on August 10, 2021 at 10:30 pm

Nice video. Great ideas, however, the reason the cabinet over the refrigerator is residing is nothing should be sitting on top of the refrigerator or directly above. Refrigerators need room to breath. Heat from the top and also the sides and the back needs to escape otherwise the compressor will overwork and cause the refrigerator lifespan to be shortened and electric bill higher.

Where did you get your cabinets from?

  30. MotoChic on August 10, 2021 at 10:31 pm

Omg YES on the knee space! I see that in bars also.

  31. Sara Shepard on August 10, 2021 at 10:32 pm

Open shelving looks horrible and messy and isn’t as clean as having cabinets to protect the dishes and cups from dust and flies.

  32. jay c on August 10, 2021 at 10:35 pm

Let me guess more grey? How about some fake wood flooring?

Adjust your sound levels … get them as close as possible; not "too loud" and then "too low."

  35. Willie on August 10, 2021 at 10:38 pm

Countertop overhang is kind of necessary to have actual "counters". That lip was useful for counting pennies or other items that you rake into your hand below the lip, hence the name counter. With flush mount all you have is a topper, can’t count nothing.

  36. Sydnee Mikumuren on August 10, 2021 at 10:38 pm

the fridge one is definitely something that was important for me in remodeling. I hate how common it is for the top fridge cabinet to basically be way too hard to reach for no good reason.

  37. Marcia Brothers on August 10, 2021 at 10:38 pm

We HATE open shelving. Otherwise, good ideas. Also, outlets in island and in drawers.

  38. momma T on August 10, 2021 at 10:38 pm

Unless you’re Martha Stewart with a cleaning staff , open shelving for the kitchen is a nightmare.
Looks pretty in a magazine tho

  39. Mark Burling on August 10, 2021 at 10:40 pm

Consider having cabinets up to the ceiling- thus way you won’t have a top surface to clean (a nasty job). Use glass splashbacks as they avoid grouting, bounce light around the room and are easy to clean. Put sockets away from areas where you want your storage jars to be. Mount vertical knife racks to save wall space, and if mounting floating shelves make sure to place shelf holders/sticks into holes filled with resin. Then mount hollow shelves onto them for a solution that is rock solid, which will take a great amount of weight, and which will not drop ir sag. Mount smooth handles on doors to avoid tearing your clothes and use brushed steel rather than chrome to avoid endless polishing. Finally swap black for white countertype because black shows up every crumb and you will be wiping them down forever. Buy chairs that offer lower back support.

Anyone recommending open shelves in kitchens, clearly doesn’t have to clean them! Pass!

  43. YadaYadaYada on August 10, 2021 at 10:42 pm

Pull out trash can drawers seem nice, but when those rails break (and they will) it is a real pain in the butt. Plus that back can is super tedious to remove. Skip this idea– been there done that–never again.

  44. Carmen P Bronx on August 10, 2021 at 10:44 pm

Upper cabinets are better for people who are not organized and don’t have a lot of stuff 😀

  45. Elena Bolio on August 10, 2021 at 10:45 pm

My space is a rental with zero cabinets. Open shelving of pots and a mini shelves for spices (a kind “L” shape avoids jars to fall out) where an excelent solution. I added hooks to the mini shelves and now there is place yo store mugs: cheap, looks beatiful, useful, and even secure

  46. Kim Kerr on August 10, 2021 at 10:46 pm

Lots of good little hints I didn’t think about. We’re too messy for open shelves but they look pretty!

Support your local hardware stores. Amazon and HomeDepot are wiping them out. Amazon is already controlling what you can buy but not what you should buy.
