There is a lot of competition in the home theater and AV receiver market. Denon, Marantz, Yamaha and Sony all have great dolby atmos surround sound receivers. Knowing which 4K or 8K receiver can make building a home theater challenging especially for beginners, but Sony’s line of AV receivers makes set-up simple. The Sony STR-DN1080 receiver is a great surround sound option for people on a budget.

Buena combinación. Pero como no conseguí el Sony a buen precio compré un Yamaha srt-700. Me faltan solo los Atmos para una inversión a futuro

hi Andrew. Thank you for a very good review. I have been looking for a hometheater system and many likes the Sony DN 1080. Which loudspeaker brands should I be looking for to match the sound of the Sony DN 1080 ? Best regards Michael , Denmark

I replaced a Denon avr 3803 with the 1080. So in terms of model it is a step down. But it sounds fantastic and better in stereo and 5.1, does 4k/60hz with my ps5, runs my pj and telly, has spotify and chromecast build in and works like a charm. Best budget product i ever bought.

  14. 3dbadboy1 on April 27, 2021 at 5:46 am

I am a novice to all this speaker equalization, etc. so you stated that it doesn’t always work … great … how do I know it ‘didn’t’ work. Frankly I wouldn’t know what it sounds like when it doesn’t. Please advise and give examples to this newbie.

  15. TOP BANANA on April 27, 2021 at 5:49 am

I got the 790 as it was alittle more friendly to my budget.haha still a decent entry level receiver tho

  16. David Milliern on April 27, 2021 at 5:50 am

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thank you so very much. I’m very fortunate to own this very unit, and after watching your video i decided to dig into mine a bit further, and BOY did I. I even followed your instructions with calibration (and yes it took me three times to get it right, but i had speakers connected wrong). and it worked out wonderfully. Thank you for your honest review and please continue to produce quality content, such as videos like this one.

  17. Don Jaun on April 27, 2021 at 5:51 am

Super awesome review. Did you have trouble pushing 7.2?

  18. John L on April 27, 2021 at 5:51 am

The Sony receiver has been out since 2017. Why have they not updated it?

  19. mablenay on April 27, 2021 at 5:53 am

HDMI supports "4K and 4K 60" … does that mean 60hz refresh rate? Will this unit support HDMI 2.1 for my PS5? If no, what do you recommend at $600 or less?

  20. harleyblue999 on April 27, 2021 at 5:53 am

Not one available to purchase the whole of the UK,a farce,i have tried so hard to get one, what gives Sony.

  21. Calin Mihai Bota on April 27, 2021 at 5:54 am

Hey Andrew, will this av reciver have enough juice and clarity for pair of q acoustics 3050i?

  22. Marty Jensen on April 27, 2021 at 5:55 am

I just bought the 1080 as my first A/V receiver. Went to set it up and realized I needed? an RCA cable to hook up the subwoofer. Or it just seemed easier perhaps. And I bought some banana plugs for ease of connection after seeing a few of your videos. I’m excited to set up my first system this week, albeit a bit nervous honestly. I’ll be watching your "how to" on setting up a 5.1 system a few more times in prep and during install! Thank you for clear, beginner friendly videos! Glad I found your channel, and I will be subscribing!

can You please review the Sony STRZA810ES AV Audio & Video I purchased this model thinking it had a better punch than 1080 was I wrong and which model gives the real 7.2 surround sound I want to set up the atmos speakers with back speakers at the same time. ?

  28. Martin Pratley on April 27, 2021 at 6:05 am

I have the str-dn1060 would the 1080 be a worthy upgrade

  29. Total plonker on April 27, 2021 at 6:05 am

I auditioned several receivers during this pandemic (3-months extended edition time) two of them being the Denon 3600 and the Denon 6500. I don’t think I should mention my thoughts on the Denon 3600 just in case there are owners reading these words. But as far as the Denon 6500 is concerned with it being a mid-range receiver therefore it’s sound seem to carry a lot more weight especially when it multi-channel 5.1 or Atmos but I can honestly say when it came to 2-channel audio the Sony was able to hold its ground with the 6500.
Now I know why most Denon receivers needs to have pre-outs! Lol

  30. Harold's Voyage on April 27, 2021 at 6:08 am

Love your review. I’m in the market for a new receiver and this vid helped a lot. Thank you.

  31. Tan Kevin on April 27, 2021 at 6:08 am

Dear Sir, your video and content truly amazing second to none. I’m new into audio world. Wondering this Sony could fire up Q Acoustics 3020i/3030i or perhaps Wharfedale DX-2? Hope you could guide me thank you very much.

Features aside (internet connectivity and apps) how does the STR-DH790 compare to the STR-DN1080? Would the sound quality be equivalent?

  34. Camarosspr Camarosspr on April 27, 2021 at 6:09 am

Don’t understand, cheap budget ATMOS article, but this receiver can’t, since 7.2
ATMOS mean ear level speakers 5-7, & ceiling height speakers 4-6, and woofer(s)
    You say ATMOS needs 9.2;
my question: in a 7.2, can preamp outputs, add for the 4 ceiling speakers?

Hi Andrew, really nice review I ret enjoyed it. Can those Zone 2 Out connectors be used as a Pre Out to connect a stereo amplifier. I have a nice NAD and want to use for music! Thanks a lot!

  37. Pete Halcrow on April 27, 2021 at 6:11 am

    Hi Andrew

I am thinking of buying this receiver, but I am having a hell of a time finding the right speakers to pair with it. I think I will start with just 2.1 speakers and build from there. Can you please make some recommendations on the best sets to purchase? Thanks!

  38. markusgrim112 on April 27, 2021 at 6:12 am

Ordered the 1080 now paired with
    Jamo S803 Front
    Jamo S8 ATM

I’m so disappointed Sony didn’t give their lower models 790 and 590 this beautiful set up UI.

  41. deeteepeafore on April 27, 2021 at 6:15 am

I can’t see that well so that’s why I’m asking. Does it have Dolby Surround upmixing ?

  42. Michael Sherman on April 27, 2021 at 6:17 am

@Andrew Robinson – If I have the STR-DN1080, would it be worth upgrading to the RX-V6A if i am using a next gen console w/ the LG CX OLED? With eARC, do I really gain any benefit running video through the receiver over just connecting directly to the tv’s HDMI 2.1 port and utilizing eARC for output? Also are you aware of any issues with the up firing height speakers w/ this device?

  43. Jas George on April 27, 2021 at 6:18 am

It would be interesting to hear what you think of the Sony STR-DH790 as it also supports Dolby Atmos… It’s about $500NZD cheaper than the 1080 in New Zealand. The 790 doesn’t have some of the features of the 1080 but for the price seems like a good deal…

  44. Ben Cravin on April 27, 2021 at 6:20 am

Hi Andrew, thanks for your insightful reviews on audio products. I bought the Sony STR-DN1080 receiver after watching your review of it 2x. However, I have it all hooked up and working (sort of). But I have at least 5 issues with it. I was wondering if I could ask your expert advice about them or can you direct me to a forum that maybe could help? If I can get these issues fixed It will be a great receiver. Thanks.

  45. Richard T on April 27, 2021 at 6:21 am

Have just bought this to replace a much-hated Denon X2400. Full disclosure: I own the previous model 1050, and it’s the main powerhouse in our lounge set-up, and I love it – the Denon was for the library and I’ve hated it since day 1. The 1080 is already so much better – I can hear every word spoken, it’s punchier, deeper, just far more capable.

I’m even thinking of using it as my 2-channel amp, replacing a stand-alone PMA-800NE with Concept 20s and REL subwoofer – it will mean fewer cables, fewer speakers (the current set up has Concept 20s next to 3020i’s) and means I can utilise 2 REL T-Zero Mk III’s. Music is provided by a Node 2i and a Denon DCD1500 CD/SACD player, so as long as they are doing the DAC work I’m hoping that using an AV receiver rather than a 2-channel amp won’t see too much of a dip in performance, if any? I’ve also got a REGA turntable , but I have a Project phono stage so that should connect up just fine, too. Nothing extraordinary in my modest-budget set-up, but just want to make the most of what I have, and also make it easier to live with!

  46. Austin Hickey on April 27, 2021 at 6:22 am

Hey I doubt you’ll see this but I am stuck between the Sony 1080 and the Denon 750H for a 3 channel bookshelf movie system. Using Sony Core series speakers. Any input?

  47. Bill May on April 27, 2021 at 6:22 am

What is the best sounding 5.2 Network Receiver for under $2,000 CDN? It must be able to play music from a network NAS system. THX.

  48. Steven Collier on April 27, 2021 at 6:22 am

  49. Farhan Siddique on April 27, 2021 at 6:23 am

I dont need home theatre, just stereo to power a pair of bose 301 series V.

  50. Rudy Vargas on April 27, 2021 at 6:23 am

What would this sony work best with? The speakers that match the receiver or would it be better with the klipsch surround they sell in costco?
