Speaking as someone who is used to doing fast and smaller pen strokes, due to my arm having shaking issues for as long as I can remember, I find that most cheap drawing tablets and drawing monitors are unresponsive to me. I’ve had plenty of bad experiences with XP-Pen (or more accurately, Ugee, since they rebranded) over the years, and I’m tempted to just buy an expensive Cintiq or iPad/Surface (alongside setting it up to be used like a PC monitor) and call it a day.

I wish Wacom made a 120Hz drawing monitor with a higher USB polling rate to actually compete with the iPad Pro and Surface Pro, because I want something that’s close to responsive like the instant response you get from drawing on paper while also not feeling crowded. I find it crazy how drawing monitors still seem like they’re using cheap IPS panels, and how ridiculously overlooked and scoffed at having a responsive tablet is, considering how cheap and accessible IPS high refresh rate monitors are nowadays. The DS stylus even feels more responsive than most tablets to me, and that was a device that released in 2004. It’s crazy how Wacom is essentially the Adobe of drawing tablets, where most professionals end up using them despite them not doing much to improve their product line over the years. Speaking as someone who spent $250 on an XP-Pen Artist 10, I thought it was a waste of money (or more accurately, not good for the price), as it basically took every issue that I have with cheap drawing monitors and ramped them up to 11. The UI for Clip Studio and Krita took up 90% of the space on what’s essentially a marked up 720p display, and the USB C cable bundled with it doesn’t meet any sort of display standards, making it hard to replace. You also need to factor in the cost of a stand as well (Which those don’t include) to not strain your neck or back from incorrect posture.

I don’t feel like there’s that many options that will actually work with how I draw.

I’ve been doing digital art for long and wanted to start trying ipad but I’m worried the quality of art I will produce by using procreate will not be as good as using photoshop. I’ve been researching artists who draw using procreate and I have to say most of them only making flat colored art unlike in photoshop where you can render almost 3d-like image I just haven’t seen that in procreate

The Apple pencil is a wonder, and IMO the stylus is just as important as the tablet. Now that the iPad pro is purported to getting a dimensional upgrade it should be all you need, but always remember that you can always just go the traditional route and use paper/canvas/traditional materials and capture them digitally afterwards.

I need a tablet(non- stationary) that can handle Cricut Design Space, Affiinity Photo or PS, Canva, 5 browsers open, and “10 screen ideal, adobe dream weaver, adobe xd.

😬any recommendations anyone? Can the iPad Pro handle all those downloads and some apps running at the same time??

  6. CartyCartoons on July 5, 2022 at 12:07 am

Hey ergojosh which tablet would you recommend to me? I have been drawing for a while now but im still new to animation judging by the animations i make on youtube.

  7. Lego Minifig on July 5, 2022 at 12:08 am

Ah yes, I remember when I first got into digital art and wanted the cheapest display tablet I could find. Bought a Parblo Coast10 for $250-300. Man have tablets come along way since then. You can now get an XP-PEN Artist12 with a much better looking and larger screen with a higher resolution and shortcut buttons (and actually working drivers) for $200 or less.

I now use an XP-Pen 22e pro on a cheap $30 arm when I’m working at my desktop and a M1 iPad Pro when I’m on the go. Despite the fact that I wouldn’t recommend the Coast10 even with the $80 price tag now (mostly due to their older drivers that actually worked not being available) I still respect that tablet. The best tablet is the one you have access to.

For 14 years I’ve been working as a digital artist and 3 modeler. I work in zbrush, Maya, 3ds max, Photoshop, blender, cinema4d, after effects. I model, sculpt, texture and render.

The only thing I can say to beginners is that you don’t need an expensive tablet. Buy a cheap one an plug it into your pc or phone. Don’t waste money until you know it’s right for you.

I still use my wacom intuos 3 at times, I bought 15 years ago 😊 atm I mostly use Wacom Intuos BT medium which is just awesome..huion is both cheap and good also.

Worthwhile it is, to warn people about display tablets and its downside for messing your posture and ergonomics

    I need some advice
I have built an desktop set up through out the last years and I’m pretty happy with it. Since I draw digitally on regular basis I thought of purchasing something more portable for university. I want to keep my current setup as my main drawing device for home though.
I’ve been researching and for now the wacom studio pro would be my dream device. But I don’t have the money to spend 3000€.
I’ve been tempted to purchase an iPad but I’m concerned about the compability with my windows setup.
Since I use nothing from iOS ecosystem and don’t plan on doing so. If someone knows how these two work together I would appreciate the help ❤️

Ive been drawing storyboards, character 2D/3D art, and animations on a stationary display tablet with my pc, and can definitely agree with what was said in this video.
However, I also work and go away on courses away from my pc/tablet at home, and have been looking into something more mobile for my storyboarding, animation, and 2D character art.
I think iPad’s the way to go for my mobility needs, and i almost bought a 2in1 tablet/pc but i think its just cuz im used to thinking about drawing on pc and needing those apps instead of focusing on mobility with just 2D needs.

I’m pretty much comfortable now with my Wacom One pen tab. Very very basic and still work amazingly.

But for a while I’m considering if I should buy budget iPad or the pro one because I also will use it for my future college. Thanks for helping me to choose ☺️

  25. Nakano on July 5, 2022 at 12:29 am

This is the exact video I was looking for! I haven’t really been drawing a lot, but I want to pick it up as a hobby. I wasn’t really sure what types of tablet types that existed. Got a 32GB ram & Ryzen 9 5900x Processor, which is pretty good. Being able to see what I am drawing is the main feature I wanted, now I know what I want, thanks!

  26. Nansify on July 5, 2022 at 12:30 am

I begun on my sister’s laptop with a Wacom tablet thing where there’s no screen. The usual ones- and then I stopped, used only my phone and finger XD did some art, and now I got an iPad and Apple Pencil, iPad 8th gen :p with the 1st gen Apple Pencil and keep on practising rn. It all works great ! I suggest that if you can and want to save money ? Definitely can go with the 7th and 8th iPads. Idk why everyone disagrees, many find it weird with the gap the glass has with the screen but honestly. I don’t even notice it. So it’s ok as long as you just- use that.
If you haven’t yet been comfortable with the pro’s then they are pretty good for start :DD

Sorry for my weird English ? I’m still learning :”)

im getting my first ever one but i dont know witch one to buy

  28. 「Keiraaa」 on July 5, 2022 at 12:32 am

I’ll be honest with you I haven’t gotten the Wacom, iPad, or the 2 in one things. But I will say definitely just get the iPad. I know myself and I know that even if I was deep into art I wouldn’t get the Wacom. I’d get the *innovator*16. Please and I mean please do some research on the innovator 16. It has a very good price for what it comes with. I hear a lot of good things about it and even people who got the Cintiq said it definitely was better for them. Especially in price! If you don’t want a iPad and want something that is made purposely for ART, I’d say check out xp pen. (innovator 16 is from xp-pen) Very affordable prices!

Just a side thing. I did not know Cintiq got THAT big. I can’t see how ppl can draw on something so big. Just looking at her screen while she’s drawing made me feel so overwhelmed. Goodness gracious!

I have a question, if someone will answer. I just started drawing, and I want to go digital, should I just buy a stylus and go on my I pad tablet? If so, what drawing app should I use?

  31. Dark Slayer on July 5, 2022 at 12:33 am

Facts All of them is expensive

  32. Carlo Molina on July 5, 2022 at 12:35 am

I’m definitely not an artist, I’m a software development and recently I have been drawing a lot on paper all of the flows that we develop, I would like to share with my team all of those drawings so, what I really need is to have a visual representation plain white background and changing been able to swap colors of what I’m drawing so, I think that my goal it’s very simple drawing boxes, simple lines just like a flow diagram and put some notes that’s it. Do you think that an actual iPad would do the job just fine or it would be kinda overkill ?

  34. Crystal Williams-Brown on July 5, 2022 at 12:37 am

My struggle is I have wanted to travel for a very long time and I’m finally in a place to do that but don’t have a way to draw digitally while away from home. I have been using Krita to draw and would like to stick with that rather than learn new software.

I was doing digital art solely on my iPhone 6S+ with just my touch screen for 2 years. I had to quit because my screen (internal and external) was becoming damaged from the work. Now I’m trying to get an XP-Pen innovator 16 Pro anniversary edition, but there were some issues and it’s become a mess. I have a laptop, not sure if it’s up for the task of digital art, but we’ll see when it’s time to cross that bridge. At the very least it’ll work until I can get a work space (currently using my bed) and a desktop PC. Then I can just use the laptop for travel.

you just saved me 1400 dollars, you reminded me that I have a wacom one laying around, its so easy to get caught up in the what seems to be fast fashion for technology these days. my wacom one paired up to my 32 inch viewsonic screen is so much better than an 11 inch ipad.

wacom or xp-pen? I have both, but also a huion, a very good brand too.
I started with an xp-pen,and I had to buy a new one, for personal reasons.
but then, I found a very good ,affordable huion, second hand, and only after a year I found a wacom.
I do reccomend the huion brand, they are all three chinese brands, and very good even for beginners, because they provide a big display and you can see the work better.
