Should I Get 8K TV? | Benefits vs 4K, Best TVs in 2020 & AYNTK

Full guide to 8K TVs in 2020, including the advantages versus 4K television, how upscaling makes a big difference, and a look at supported Mega-Ultra-HD shows and movies. I’ve also rounded up the best 8K TVs you can buy right now, from Samsung, Sony and LG. It’s a pretty short list, sure, but at least one of them costs under £10,000!

Right now Japan is the only country to offer a dedicated 8K channel for shows and sports, while most streaming services max out at 4K. However, these clever 8K TVs offer upscaling smarts for your HD or 4K content, so you can watch with improved clarity. That’s similar tech to the upscaling you’ll find in Nvidia’s Shield TV 2020, or smartphones like the Xperia 1 from Sony.

All the same, the difference in picture quality between Ultra HD and 8K isn’t huge, unlike the price differences. So if you’re looking to buy one of these TVs, such as the Samsung Q800T, Sony Master ZG9 (also confusingly referred to as ‘Z9G’) or LG’s SIGNATURE Z9, you should think again unless you’re already minted.

So hopefully this guide to 8K content and TV tech has helped out, let me know what you think of these pricey goggleboxes down below.

Let us know how you get on with that Tube Tv shield. See if you would recommend it.

I won’t fall into that trap again! I bought a 4K TV in 2013 and its not compatible with any new sky Q box because it hasn’t got HDMI 2.0. That was £2,500 well spent!

I want an 8k tv that’s bigger than my 65 inch 4k tv I love the newest technology and I don’t care what others say about it.

of all tech reviewers, tech spurt and Dave2D are my favourite. Tech spurt is informative, high-paced and amusing while Dave2D is very modest. Love ya, cheers

    £80,000 for a TV!? No thanks! 😒

they are starting to go down in price but still pricey .. this has recently been listed on curry’s and argos 55" £2499 or £2999 for a 65"

    https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-home-entertainment/televisions/televisions/samsung-qe55q700tatxxu-55-smart-8k-hdr-qled-tv-with-bixby-alexa-google-assistant-10212166-pdt.html

the reason i’m here looking at youtubers thoughts on the them lol my lg 4k tv has started to flicker then go out of focus and then snap back to a good picture every few seconds after their recent firmware update a couple of weeks ago so looking for a new tv as lg are not helping at all

No I think 4K with a high refresh rate of 144 Hz is enough. 8K TVs will definitely sacrifice on refresh rate which is bad. For example, Samsung S20 can record 4K @60 fps but 8K @ 24 fps only. 4K 60fps is better than 8K 24 fps

8k is better than 4K. Similarly, 2 masks are better than 1 mask. Fauci is a marketing man than a medical doctor!

There is no such thing as a 8K TV …

  24. TopHatCat1989 on June 1, 2022 at 11:14 pm

It won’t be worth it to upgrade to 8K for another 2-5 years, and by then the price will probably have come down so us mere peasants can actually afford them, though somehow I doubt it. 4K will still be the standard for the next decade I think.

  25. Waris on June 1, 2022 at 11:16 pm

Enjoy your Shield TV, wherever it ends up in

  26. Israel Lai on June 1, 2022 at 11:17 pm

The only thing 8K TVs are good for is lowering the prices of 4K

  29. Oprea Daniel on June 1, 2022 at 11:23 pm

Any recommendations on 4k TV to buy in 2020 and based on price, value and performance?

  30. Geordi La Forgery on June 1, 2022 at 11:23 pm

My TV is HD-Ready so it should handle 8k no problems.

Also I’ve got a few AOL floppy disks with over 100 hours free internet.

As an early adopter of 4K tech back many years ago now I’m hearing all the same tired arguments trundled out. Back then it was "There’s no 4k content, the panels don’t look much better than HQ 1080p panels so you may as well just buy the best value FHD TV".

Fast forward a few years and there’s plenty of UHD Blurays, quite a large selection of 4K streaming options and by and large its been adopted as the industry standard and plenty of your average joes now own a 4K panel. Terrestrial broadcasting still hasn’t quite caught up but we all know that’s going the way of the dodo anyway. 5G internet will be the final nail in that coffin there as most forms of content transfer over on to the more cost effective internet delivered method.

There’s every reason to be advocating for 8K adoption now, for those who have the financial means of course (bearing in mind 4K panels were very expensive when they launched also). Pixels per inch does matter to overall image quality and 8K panels allow for much greater pixel density, AI learning algorithms built in to 8K pansls will legitimately enhance picture quality over time. You’re also pretty much buying a computer when you buy a high end TV, buying an 8K flagship means you’ll get the best hardware and software configuration offered by the relevant manufacturer. Couple this with all the other enhancements that have evolved over the last 5 years like HDR and now HFR that are built in as standard in 8K tvs and I struggle to see why you wouldn’t buy one if you’re in the market today/next 6-12 months.

Considering how rapidly TV tech changes most 4K TV’s will look pretty ho-hum in 3 years time when compared to the new best thing on sale whereas a 2020 model 8K TV will still hold its own and then some. Eventually there will be 8K content in large supply, plotting the same course as 4K content did. The delivery of the content is the current problem preventing it from wider adoption but with AI compression and upscaling tech making inroads and .h266 on the way it wont be a problem.

TL:DR – Buy an 8K TV and enjoy having the benefits of such innovative tech long before the captain sensibles of the world do the same. Considering how much time most people spend in front of a TV in this day and age why would you not want the best of what’s out there?

LG Nanocell 8K is where its at – relatively affordable and utterly brilliant. The other affordable option is the Samsung Q800T but imo is no better than the LG and chews significantly more electricity.

I’ll *wait* to purchase an 8K tv.

    I just bought a *2019 Samsung 50-inch 4K tv* for *$347.00 USD.*

About a year and a half ago they were *priced at $2000 USD.*

Funny that what it replaced was an *LG 32-inch HD 1080p* It was purchased for *$1300* USD on Black Friday.

  36. Dave Biswas on June 1, 2022 at 11:32 pm

8k tv only for millionaires and billionaires

  37. Andrew Wiles on June 1, 2022 at 11:33 pm

What advantage to the Nvidia tv shield 4K AI upscaling have over televisions which do 4K scanning? Seems like if you have an Apple TV which isn’t 4K Or any other non-4K streaming device for a TV, a TV with 4K would be able to upscale for tonight 1080p to 4K. Happy to hear why you’d get the shield tv still? Is it because those TVs cost more? Something which is a downer is shield tv doesn’t do 4K ai upscale from videos streamed from PLEX.
