10 British TV shows all foreigners should watch
Today we’re talking all things British TV! Here are my favourite British TV shows from when I was a foreigner living in England. The UK has a LOT of TV, so it was extremely hard to narrow it down to just 10 shows – but I’ll be posting more videos on British TV eventually! For all viewers living in the UK: what’s your favourite British TV show??

Hey! I’m Alanna – a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it’s really like living in the UK. It’s not always easy, but there’s been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a Youtube video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

Bradley Walsh (of your beloved The Chase) has also been a main supporting cast member in the last two seasons of Dr Who.
Apart from that you clearly have excellent taste and judgement.
Misfits is my favorite British TV show
Most American TV shows have Canadian actors
Bob Bob Mortimer is a true British nut.
Most of these shows are on youtube, can you receive these in other countries?
You might like:
Allo Allo,
Just Good Friends,
The Good Life,
Goodnight Sweetheart,
To the Manor Born,
If you get the British senses of humour: The fall and rise of Reginald Perrin,
If you like Dr Who there’s always: Torchwood,
An old superhero type thing: The Champions
For a film try watching: Passport to Pimlico
The Two Ronnies sketch, The Phantom Raspberry blower of Old London Town. Absolutely hilarious had me laughing so much the tears ran down my cheeks.
Canada came to the assistance of Britain at its darkest hours ….. at the start of its darkest hours.
Yeah I get it I never watched got
OMG did you call The Chase silly. How many questions could you answer.
2144 comments soo far. You will never see this.
But for the LOVE OF GOD if you do… watch "Have I got News for YOU" that you have already recommended with Boris Johnson on it. Just search YT for it.
Then you might understand why the UK fell under his spell.
And.. this is from a FORMER very right Conservitive. Brexit broke me. The actions after that alienated me. And for the 1st time in my life I **might** vote Labor in a marginal seat as long as Kier keeps making sense.
This may be comedy. But it also has a massive influnace on British policy.
Her…… Bullseye
Me…….she’s a keeper 🥃
Scott and Bailey, best TV UK police show.
Your right flea bag is amazing!
‘Allo Allo is timeless x
I don’t watch Dr Who either. My favourite WILTY moment is Kevin Bridges’ Bulgarian horse story. I watch it every few months to cheer myself up 🙂 Anyway, back to scratching the bottom of the barrel…
I love The Chase …..Bradley is a funny guy …https://youtu.be/jl1Zfz-Widc

I’ll send you the link to HIGNFY with Brian Blessed!!!!!!
Black Books, the IT Crowd, Father Ted, League of Gentleman (possibly and acquired taste… it’s a bit dark), Catherine Tate, Red Dwarf, Edge of Darkness (very old now but still good) Life and Loves of a She-Devil, The Prisoner, Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister, many more I cant think of just now…
Have you seen only fools and horses?
Watch Last of the Summer Wine
‘Would I Lie To You’ is fabulous. Lee Mack is so quick! We have a lot of awful TV, but we also have great comedy and dramas. Pleased you have appreciated some of them.
Wow! I’ve been gone too long! After 41 years in Canada I can honestly say that after watching this video and also ’11 weird shows’ that I’ve never heard of or watched ANY of them. Guess that my watching history must have stopped in the 70s!
If you’re into crime drama’s us Brits do some great shows ranging from 2 old lady gardens who solve crime (Rosemay and Thyme) to murder capital of the world (Midsomer Murders) to old lady doing an impression of Cheryl Cole (Vera) to WW2 crime drama (Foyle’s war)
what to watch next, father ted, the young ones, bottom, blackadder, mr bean, qi, the vicar of dibley, only fools and horses, hale and pace, alas smith and jones, spitting image, a bit of fry and laurie, french and saunders, the fast show, goodness gracious me, harry enfields television programme, kytv, canned carrott, alexei sayles stuff, not the nine o`clock news, monty pythons flying circus, the goodies, threads, survivors, the day of the triffids, blakes 7, hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, oranges are not the only fruit, gbh,
I thought Kyle was sacked.. Arrogant bastard anyway. All provocation and ego!!! Total disgrace and truly copied from America.. Bullseye? Nothing in this game for 2 in a bed!!
Everything on this list is great! Try Line of Duty on BBC for a great police/detective drama!
You do realise that The Chase and Dr Who have someone in common? 🙂
Glad WILTY got on the list because I was trying to figure out a way to tell you to watch it without you hating me 🙂 Also funny how you used the phrase ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ a couple of times, that was another show that was very funny, but I am not going to tell you to watch that one either 😉
Dr Who originated in 1963 and out of the 13 different Doctors, only 4 have made it a good program. However, it introduced a lot of concepts to society and paved the way for later sci-fi shows such as Star Trek.
Bullseye! Talk about rubbing salt in the wounds – "Here’s what you could have won". Showing contestants what they missed out on by losing and sending them home with a tat statue? Cringeworthy but British to the core!
Every program needs a hook to get viewers interested, there are at least 5 on your list that I have never watched. For whatever reason they just didn’t grab my attention, but that’s not to say they aren’t worth watching- everyone has their own preferences.
Mention Last of the Summer Wine, Dinnerladies, Only Fools and Horses, Dad’s Army to anyone and they will probably tell you about their favourite episode, and are some of the best written comedies on British TV.
Cats does countdown!!! 🤷🏼♂️
I love and enjoy the same comedy shows as you….. have a look at Lee Mack (he’s Northern btw) being a cockney … enjoy x..https://youtu.be/5ZQQ5FJXJaY
You should watch Green Wing, an irreverent comedy set in a hospital. By far the most I’ve ever laughed at a TV show.
Black Books is a very good dark humour show, it’s about a mess of a bookstore owner played by Dylan Moran.
My favourite drama would be The Last Kingdom, which can be found on Netflix these days (though the Netflix produced series (#4) wasn’t as good).
Bake off, Masterchef, Ready, Steady Cook… To name three
You can just say The Bakeoff, to keep from having that mouth full of oysters
Killing Eve – yes – the rest… erm…
If you like a good drama then check out Broadchurch, a masterpiece. Also after life , 👌👌
Red Dwarf
If you like detective shows try to get your hands on Strike. Pretty good
A must watch comedy quiz is … Never Mind the Buzzcocks!
Irony and absurdity are critical elements of modern british culture (and in no small measure, all british culture). Moving from monty python through to douglas adams to things like the mighty boosh even. There are a million flavours. Don’t miss out on radio comedy, as there are not only more panel shows there, but entirely different types of show. There are also some absolutely brilliantly innovative and clever comedians who experimenting in pretty much every form. I’d actually recommend trying state of play, which feels like an underappreciated miniseries. Obviously you pretty much have to watch some staggeringly large amount of doctor who, not least as it has been intimately connected to so many british cultural mainstays, including Adams. Consider Dirk Gently if you haven’t. And of course there’s a brilliant and diverse line-up of educational and documentary programmes covering almost every topic. Again, don’t miss out on radio.
To be British is not to assume God has a sense of humour. And whether or not you believe in God is irrelevant to that. God still has a sense of humour, and sometimes you’re the joke.
Interesting but somewhat long winded.
The whole point of getting politicians on HIGNFY is to make them squirm and embarrass them. I like the show Forget About It – isn’t that Canadian? Trailer Park Boys! But I was/am a big Rush fan. Rebus, have you seen that? Inspector Morse, based in Oxford. I have a story you should know, a while back, I was working in a Bistro and he and a friend came in, Bob was Bob and had fun, he also drunk a lot and two of us had to call his home and put him in a taxi and pay it as he was Bladdered! Bob you owe me nothing it was fun to meet you. Stay sober mister.
This Hour has 22 minutes, the Rick Mercer Report, and Canadian Airfarce have been running for years. (The last two, unfortunately have run out.), Canada now has the Great Canadian Baking Show, it’s just as pleasant and sweet as the British one.
Check out Absolutely Fabulous! Give it a few episodes– it’s broad humor, but absolutely hilarious! 🙂 Enjoy!
I agree with many of your choices, especially HIGNY and WILTY. I would also include comedy shows like The Inbetweeners, Friday Night Dinner, Peep Show, etc.
Have I got News for You, see if you can see of the old clips with Boris Johnson on. They ripped the piss out of.
