12 Most Common Kitchen Layout Mistakes to Avoid #kitchenlayout #mistakes

Here are some common kitchen layout mistakes and how to avoid them: https://homeia.com/12-most-common-kitchen-layout-mistakes-to-avoid/

The kitchen is the hearth and the hub of your family, so it is natural to want to keep it updated as your needs change. When remodeling a kitchen, there are many, many things to factor in that can be easily overlooked.

1. Picking Cabinets That Are Outdated is a common mistake: Outdated cabinets can ruin the effect of your remodel. Go with an updated, modern version of new cabinets for your all-important space.

2. Choosing Cabinetry That’s Too Small will be a bad decision for your layout. Then you will not have enough storage space, and worse, your kitchen will look out of proportion.

3. Failing to Install a Backsplash as both a practical and design element is a mistake. The backsplash can enhance the overall beauty of the kitchen. It should be color-coordinated with the rest of your kitchen.

4. Not Picking the Right Countertop Material and Style is another problem, as is its color. The color of the countertop should embellish the rest of the colors in the kitchen.

5. Not Lighting Up the Right Spots is an unfortunate oversight in your planning. A dimly lit kitchen is neither functional nor appealing. You should plan for adequate lighting in your remodel.

6. A Lack of Kitchen Storage Space will frustrate you in the long run. You need to map out storage spaces for your food, dishes, cookware, cutlery, glassware and small appliances, to name a few.

7. Not Considering the Workflow will prove to be another misstep. The workflow is based on how the person can move easily and quickly between the cooktop, the refrigerator and the sink while working in the kitchen. The layout design must take this workflow into consideration when planning.

8. Choosing Appliances Last is a very common mistake when trying to plan for a remodel. The appliances should be the first items to be chosen. You need to figure the right dimensions of all the appliances and map out precisely where to put them so that they are near each other but not too close.

9. Picking the Wrong Island can be both a design and space problem unless you choose wisely. Make sure it is not an obstruction. You should get an island to fit the dimensions and shape of your kitchen.

10. Forgetting About the Budget can happen as you get into the process. You may find yourself wanting the most expensive cabinets and appliances. At this point a good step back from the process may be in order.

11. No Landing Space planned in will make the kitchen hard to navigate. A. You’ll need landing spaces next to the refrigerator, stovetop and sink which are empty spaces where you can set heavy, cold or hot things down.

12. Improper Planning can lead to a plethora of problems. Spend extra time doing all your planning well ahead of starting your remodel so that things go smoothly and the outcome is what you want.

Conclusion: If you get stuck, a professional will know how to best plan for your kitchen remodel and will understand the dimensions of each part of your space as well as the proper way to install every item in the room.

My husband and I own a countertop manufacturing business. About the backsplash – something you didn’t mention – they are essential so that water can’t get behind the top and flow down the wall, where it can cause damage to the drywall, and worse, could cause mold down the road. We’ve seen it happen. Also, if you are considering replacing floors and wall color, as well as countertops, we suggest you choose your countertop color first. There are lots of colors available, but there are way more flooring and paint color options. I’ve seen too many people struggle to find a color of top they like because they’ve already painted the walls and/or had their new flooring laid. Something else we know can be an issue for DIYers – we recommend you buy the best cabinets you can afford, even if you have to settle for less in countertop until you can save enough up for your dream tops. There is nothing sadder than seeing a brand new, gorgeous countertop on old cabinets that a facelift won’t fix. We had a family member who bought Silestone countertops for her existing kitchen, then 3 years later wanted new cabinets. It was unknown if the tops could be taken off the old cabinets without breaking them. And the new cabinets had to be custom made, so that they would fit the exact footprint of the old ones. The changes she could make was limited. Just thoughts from someone who’s been doing this a long time and has seen a lot of unnecessary mistakes made.

Very interesting things to keep in mind! We’ve been perplexed with what color to paint the walls (other than white) to go with the light gray shaker cabinets we want, and for the backsplash color scheme. I never though about incorporating the countertop color elements. The granite sample we like "New Caledonia" from HD has gray, black, white, silver, brownish-gold colors mixed together.
