Van Life Appliances – Fridges, Cook tops, Ovens, ETC.
I plan to do more talks with Dan because I feel he thinks about things way outside the box which is great because it opens up so much for discussion.

More images of the products you discuss would be great. An a video about hot water and showers. Thanks
Could u address HEAT stress on all the electronics. If you park for an extended period, leave it all day in the heat, temps can get well over 120Β°. To me it seems that would cause problems. Just like I see on a lot of builds where peeps pack all their batteries, charge controller, etc. In one small tight space with no ventilation.
Also, I wish you’d do something on a Dodge/Any minivan. A lot of us can’t afford the high top vans and are going to have to work with what we’ve got. Thanks for ur time and attention.
Would love to know more about the recirculating shower πΏ also if domestic is the only one who does diesel tap cook appliances
Hey, what is this p trap alternative (flange ?) mentioned?
I know I didn’t hear him say that he has 20 grand in a 200 amp-hour lithium system… I know that I didn’t hear that!
Combo microwave/convection/air fryer/grill or slow cooker units are very affordable. They don’t take up much space. Could one of those combo units be used in a camper? I like an eye level fridge. Is there a reason I don’t see many of them?
Did I miss which model of Isotherm fridge you are using? I don’t see it in your URL list. Thanks so much for all the information you provide!
You can reheat in an instapot.
I bought my three way dometic 33l chest refrigerator in 2004. Still work perfectly most of the time running under butane in my van. I just cleaned and take some rust out from the back once two days ago, because im prepairing my new van. π
The chest style actually barely loses any cold – you can literally feel the heat difference when you stick your hand him, whereas when you open a door fridge what happens is that the cold air drops out, but also the hot air rushes in to replace it. Have a look at the Technology Connections to really see how much of a difference that makes, but overal a chest style freezer running at -18 is more efficient than a fridge of the same size running at ~6c.
How much electric power is enough.
U talk all these crops and never show the appliances and how they work!
Shhhhhht!
I tried running 200ah lithium ion batteries in my build and after the first trip I realized that wasn’t enough. I was only powering LED lights, my Dometic CRX110 fridge, and charging my phone. I often woke to 40% – 20% charge remaining so a cloudy or shady day was going to be a bad thing. Plus I still need to install my petrol heater, water pump, and water heater so my power profile still needs to grow. I do have shore power connections available but outlets are not always around. I’ve since ordered another battery and a DC to DC charger so I can charge on the road. Because electrical systems are so expensive I wanted to make sure I needed things before buying. If I had the DC to DC charger already maybe the 3rd battery wouldn’t be required but I also don’t like the thought of having to drive or run the engine just to charge.
I came here because I need to decide on my cooking solution. My Dometic oven/range has been on order for 3 months now and I need something soon. Considering going camp cook stove to simplify but I can’t get past the nagging thought of NOT having an oven and having use for it. Retro fitting one later would be such a pain.
Hi Jarrod, I think you made an error in your 12Vdc vs 120Vac vs 220Vac (240Vac) and that your 120 & 220Vac powered fridges will use more power. A fridge uses an x amount of energy to maintain the absorption process that cools/freezes the content of your fridge. If a fridge uses 4 Amps at 12Vdc, the power consumption will be 4×12=48 Watts. This will most likely be around the same when running on 120Vac, jet the current will be around a tenth of when it runs on 12Vdc. I write around as if you have a multi voltage fridge, the internal voltage conditioning, to run the fridge, will used some power too. When you have a 120 or 220Vac (240Vac) fridge you need the convertor and, besides the in efficiency of the convertor consuming power when operating as you mentioned, there is also another expensive component required. The use of a convertor for an appliance like a fridge will be 24/7 and adds up on your cost of ownership using this fridge. In my opinion a multi voltage fridge will be the way forward as βless is moreβ. The good thing of a multi voltage fridge is that it automatically switches over when you either connect to a grid or switch on the convertor for your cooking.
Thanks for the video!
I wish you would have talked about coffee pots and how much power they pull and what’s the best ones for van living, rather than instant coffee, because I love coffee! LOL
I agree with Jarrod, I’d prefer using electric everything in a van. It’s scary to have propane and gas as a heating source within the van. My thought is you come up dead from carbon monoxide. I’m sure it’s some downfalls to all electric, probably electrical wave sensitivity.. always everything to consider.
I was just trying to look this stuff up for a future van
Spends $20,000 on solar setup so he can have heated floors…smh
I purchased the Camp Chief oven stove combo and noticed it reads for use outdoors only.. so wondering about venting. Have special venting been added to use this oven appliance inside the van? Thanks
I’m all for all electric, but would love to have an oven. How bought a countertop convection oven? Would it draw too much energy?
I thought they was going to show actual appliances. But no they like for people to here them tak
so informative. thanks for this
The ashamed pint bareilly reign because arch appropriately influence above a nosy credit. useful, humdrum cone
I love the tip: "Whatever your cooking style is now….Look into ways to mimic that"
26:00 "We make cookies for festivals"…. "Oh yeah, you make some gooood cookies"
Vita mix? I would be blending alot! I went from 220lb in the beginning of 2019 I’m down to 185 by pretty much just living off of a Vita mix blender. It’s crazy the older you get you start to think about your health alot more.
technology connections made a good video on comparing the efficiency of (at home) chest vs door fridge/freezers
Does anybody ever put a small washer and dryer in the van?
Hi, I have seen debate on using a regularly powered fridge and spending extra money on your power system. The extra power can be utilised all over the van and itβs cheaper to replace a regular fridge. Any opinion?
has to be one of the most informative, useful van conversion channels. But seriously, what’s with the sheetrock (?) end wall? As a professional designer I can’t believe how that blank white wall cancels out any benefit from the natural wood of the side wall. Personally a great fan of contrast in design but it isn’t working for me here. Maybe Tocci has already already addressed this in his videos which I’m admittedly new to but from a design point of view I hate seeing that detracting from what is brilliant content.
Use a cast iron skillet for pizza!!! boom problem solved.
Thanks ππππ π
Just a quick comment. You can bake in an instant pot. The best banana bread ever! I wrapped foil over the top. So moist. Google it, many ideas.
π
Would it be advisable to get a small chest freezer since I have a Instant Pot?
What is your opinion about a Microwave Convection Oven?
But what about toaster ovens/tabletop convection? π
I have a 1995 Roadtrek which has a microwave (not terribly helpful for boondocking). I want to change that out and use the space for a Camp Chef oven. I’m already running propane for my fridge and furnace and the existing cook top, which of course would be replaced by the Camp Chef. I love this stuff, lolπππ¨π¦
Do convection microwaves really roast well (chicken, leg of lamb)? How about cakes and cookies? I like mine slightly crisp on the outside but moist on the inside. It is hard for me to believe that this could be achieved. I like having a microwave for heating leftovers (from eating out) and cooking frozen dinners. So, if it really did nicely for both functions it would be a nice space-saver.
A/C is an Absolute MUST!!! Cooking/heat is EZ. My build is focused on power for A/C First, then add from there.
Great info. Glad to have found your videos. I think Messi’s opinion on cooking starting at 25:08 makes zero sense though. To claim that reheating leftovers takes the same amount of time as cooking fresh is absurd. I think it’s way more efficient in both time and energy to make a couple of meals worth of food when cooking and eat the leftovers over the next day or two. Yes, it all depends on personal preference but I think having a microwave makes a lot of sense. I wish you had had a more in-depth discussion of the pros and cons of having one.
Jarrod, would your systems work in winter on Northern B.C. island @ 51 parallel and further North? Or would you consider LPG for fridge/freezer as an alternative to the the electric only cooling systems?
Thank you, guys!
My van is a 1977 Dodge tradesman 300 4×4 with a Cummins 5.9 L DIESEL
In my van I am mostly 12 volt, 2 drawer refrigerators and another chest accessible by openings the back doors then pull out a slide with a 95 L. I have a 2 burner induction cooktop 110 ac 1800 watts. 12 volt DC air on top + a power vent over the stove area. 8 batteries and 600 watts of Solar power. There are 2 300 watt alternators on my Engine. The van has a smart start that will start automatically if the voltage drops/ Engine water gets below 30*.. it will also start if the inside temperature risers above 90* Fahrenheit (air comes on) or fallβs below 30* ( heat comes on) inside. I have over $100,000. Dollars invested in it. 30 gallons of water, 128 gallons of diesel in 3 tanks. Queen bed and also diesel heater. 8 inch lift and 37β tires.
I spend most of the winter months around Quartzsite, Arizona. The Summer back and forth between Sandpoint, Idaho and Branson Missouri. I have be up to Prudhoe bay, Alaska and as far south as the Panama Canal.
I’m loving your channel so much great info!! Truley appreciate you guys taking time to share ! πππ
Thank you Jarrod!! Sorry for being such a pain. I’m new at this and I guess I should have kept scrolling on videos. Thank you for your time and help.
Btw, I’m planning a butterfly rack system that will handle 6 panels on my minivan roof. The slide panels will be adjustable up and down to maximize the sun angle.
What about convection microwave
I can teach you how to bake anything on a Coleman to fire, with a Turkey roasting pan. If you are interested let me know. bjohnstun@mail.com
