$649 Dyson Fan vs. $15 Walmart Fan: The Hard Truth

$649 Dyson Fan vs. $15 Walmart Fan: The Hard Truth

When I was young, I was a little obsessed with how cool Dyson fans were. But are they actually worth that amount of money? In this relatively silly video, I’m going to compare it to my $15 Walmart fan with wind speed and sound level tests!

  2. Stv on September 5, 2021 at 11:02 pm

Get a xiaomi battery operated fan.

Vornado is better than any other fan 💯💯💯

What colour you have on your wall?

  5. C Greenfield on September 5, 2021 at 11:05 pm

I love the products that dyson makes, they are innovative and original. But their fans are just plain stupid.

  6. Syaufi Shaharuddin on September 5, 2021 at 11:07 pm

my neighbour has a 3 blade rotating fan that can consistently blow out air from all angles. that i think is much cooler

omg they made an even worse version of siri remote

Honestly i am just waiting for a Apple fan / purifier

  9. Oliver Allen on September 5, 2021 at 11:10 pm

If you put a filter on the Walmart fan, you’d see a change.

  10. JT on September 5, 2021 at 11:11 pm

Loud fans put me right to sleep.. But for $500? I’m good.

  11. Mohit Jouhari on September 5, 2021 at 11:15 pm

    Also compare their power usage

  12. That Guy on September 5, 2021 at 11:15 pm

Uhh … Did we miss the fact that taking a single sample of the tower of air coming out of the dyson might be slightly different than the more focused doughnut of air coming out of the walmart fan? Either way, I do love a good doughnut. Oh shoot, airspeed must be more important than volume. Wait … Meh .. back to the 🍩…

  13. H Koizumi on September 5, 2021 at 11:17 pm

Over engineered just to be "different". As a engineer myself, that’s one of the cardinal sins I try to avoid thru my career.

$650 Dyson fan VS $15 walmart fan.
Me: Just buy $200 AC that actually cooling your room.

  16. anthalas9 on September 5, 2021 at 11:19 pm

    Thank you for this!

  17. Mat on September 5, 2021 at 11:19 pm

let’s face it though, who buys a $650 fan.. i hope that who pays that money is someone legitimately interested in the air he/she breaths in. i would buy a dyson pure firstly as a purifier, then as a fan. and to be honest i think Dyson’s is the only purifier that gives the option to be a fan too, rather than shooting air to the ceiling.

  18. Lokemms Lokemms on September 5, 2021 at 11:20 pm

as always, companies wanted to sell new things that you dont need and you pay big bucks on things you dont need. economics 101. There’s a sucker born every minute.

  19. noel996 on September 5, 2021 at 11:24 pm

I can imagine repair cost vs buying another $15 fan.

  20. Suhaib on September 5, 2021 at 11:24 pm

It’s all about aesthetics to me. Agree, doesn’t justify the cost for most but I can’t stand a conventional/ugly fans around my house.

  21. Diegienismo on September 5, 2021 at 11:26 pm

Thanks that make sense to me. why need to spend more.

  22. Michael on September 5, 2021 at 11:26 pm

Yeah but air purifiers that are hepa are like $200 so it’s $200 + $15 fan lol. If you pick one up on black friday type sales or other good deals argument could be made there not that much more money.

Probably shouldn’t buy one though otherwise $300+ is a waste $300 under not bad

  23. Rabby Calicdan on September 5, 2021 at 11:27 pm

Dyson is just flex material. I agree, get two separate devices for separate functions

  24. Jagor Jurekovic on September 5, 2021 at 11:27 pm

to be fair, moving a bunch of air through a filter, having very user-friendly software to change anything on the fan, detector and tracker for your air quality, all seeable on an actually useful mobile app, a machined aluminum controller for the fan if you’re not into their app, along with a very nice looking and solid metal frame

    vs

a fan that has 3 speed settings

is not just a matter of airspeed and loudness

and also I understate how hard and loud it is to move air through a filter

  25. Aman Kikani on September 5, 2021 at 11:27 pm

Ive always wanted a dyson fan but now I’m rethinking my decision. could you also test a *vornado* fan please

  26. Adam Merebi on September 5, 2021 at 11:27 pm

Can i get an ID on your computer screen? Thanks

Isn’t dyson thing literally pretty novelty item for rich people?

  29. ET on September 5, 2021 at 11:29 pm

Dyson fan looks cool. Ordinary fan makes cool.

  30. FuxionXD on September 5, 2021 at 11:31 pm

Better to just buy a purifier and stick them to the wallmart fan

  31. Peter Twining on September 5, 2021 at 11:32 pm

I have always thought Dyson products after their bagless vaccum cleaner inventions were over rated and quite expensive for what they are. I owned one of their bagless vacum cleaners some years back and it was good overall but did have problems that shouldn’t have been there for what I paid for it so changed to another brand and it actually performs better and was cheaper. I wouldn’t buy one of their fans I think they are ugly and there are better separate units around to buy.

  32. el es on September 5, 2021 at 11:35 pm

A suggestion: include test for power rating

I think this is why dyson is very expensive, due to its low power consumption (well if it is inverter, if not…meh)

  33. Roi Catanghal on September 5, 2021 at 11:37 pm

Nah, as devout Dyson Owner, there’s one thing that $15 Dollar Fan can’t match: The Name. Ya can’t flex with a $15 Dollar Fan but you can with a $700 Dollar Fan! lmao.

  34. jjjacer on September 5, 2021 at 11:38 pm

i love how they always called it a bladeless fan, when infact it has blades its just inside the base and pushes the air up into the exhaust chambers (although iirc its a squirrel cage fan so not the type of blades like a normal box/desk fan but more like the ones found in cars and hvac units)

  35. tommays56 on September 5, 2021 at 11:39 pm

Dyson invented so many new ways for something to be unrepairable and obsolete

  36. Emmanuel Charlot on September 5, 2021 at 11:42 pm

Dyson is a tax evading company with a xenophobic agenda (brexit) supporting an extreme right and corrupt government. Please use your buying power to make the world a better place!

  37. ak101farhan on September 5, 2021 at 11:45 pm

Where to find your screen saver?

  38. DavidFrostbite on September 5, 2021 at 11:47 pm

What about a Box Fan + Furnace Filter? The Dysons main selling point is the air filter, and thats probably why the air speed is lower than a standard fan.

For 40 bucks you can get a box fan and stick a really high quality 20" filter on the back – I have one in my house for wildfire season, and it works great.

  39. bwbadger on September 5, 2021 at 11:47 pm

Nice analysis. I wonder, did you also measure what air *volume* is moved by each fan vs air *speed*? Do you think there is there any practical difference between volume vs. speed?

  40. theWanderer521 on September 5, 2021 at 11:47 pm

do their vacuums as well 🙂 love to see a comparison with cheaper machines

  41. Justin on September 5, 2021 at 11:48 pm

The wind speed is different as the airflow is evenly spread out compared to the Walmart fan at it flows on one spot

  42. Alah Mak on September 5, 2021 at 11:49 pm

    but its a dyson

  43. Glyne Martin on September 5, 2021 at 11:49 pm

    When less is more…

  44. Sharon just sharin on September 5, 2021 at 11:50 pm

There isn’t a link to the cheap Walmart fan that was tested (I like how quiet it is) and the link to the alternative fan is not the one that was tested. My luck would be that the Amazon fan would be noisy. That’s just my luck in suitability like this.

  45. Cary Cameron on September 5, 2021 at 11:51 pm

I agree with the findings but the chart at 3:23 is kinda misleading graphically. Looking at the windspeeds at 6ft away … how is 3.1 so low compared to 5.1?

  46. G.H.C on September 5, 2021 at 11:52 pm

Why does anybody NEED an air purifier? What’s the actual real world benefit. If you have nasty stuff in the air at home then a costly air purifier is the wrong solution

  47. Mark Spurrell on September 5, 2021 at 11:52 pm

In an effort to stop people from all commenting the same thing, here’s a list of frequently commented things and my response to them:

*Comment:* You’re comparing an Air Purifier to a fan. That’s like comparing an apple to an orange.
*Response:* Dyson markets this product directly as the "Dyson Pure Cool Air Purifying Fan." The box is plastered with phrases like "Cools you in the summer," or "powerful air projection," along with all of their purification branding. Consumers that go to the store to buy one of these are looking to buy a product that works well as both an air purifier AND a fan. If the Pure Cool purifies the air just fine but is completely inferior as a fan, then it is a poor design and consumers should simply buy a fan and a purifier separately instead of spending over $600 for an inferior product.

*Comment:* The Dyson will last much longer as it has a brushless motor.
*Response:* True. But you could buy several cheap fans and replace them as they wear out and still have saved hundreds of dollars.

*Comment:* A 10dB difference is ten times louder in a technical sense, but humans don’t perceive that large of a difference.
*Response:* Also true. We perceive it to be about twice as loud. But that’s still significantly louder than the cheap fan.

*Comment:* You should have compared the cheap fan with the AM07 Dyson fan that doesn’t have a HEPA filter restricting its air flow.
*Response:* This was the only fan at my local store, so it was the one I tested. I think the point I was trying to make about the efficacy of this particular Dyson fan still stands, but if Dyson is confident that one of their other fans is able to beat up some cheap fans in a wind speed test, they can send over one and I’ll shoot another video with more tests.
