10 Video Games With Unique Art Styles

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder … except with these games where beauty is objectively the correct word to describe them. From the eerie minimalism of Limbo and The Unifinished Swan to the painterly worlds of Okami and 11-11: Memories Retold, here are 10 Video Games With Unique Art Styles.

Hope Killer7 is here, that game was weird.

  2. Altheron on February 19, 2021 at 9:30 pm

Oh great, Triple Jump has just misgendered Amaterasu.

  3. Dagan Mott on February 19, 2021 at 9:30 pm

Anybody know what the game at 0:40 is?

  4. Rattamatt396 on February 19, 2021 at 9:33 pm

Pretty much every game before the era of online with consoles.

  5. Jai Brough on February 19, 2021 at 9:34 pm

I watched this list wondering if Gorogoa was going to show up

  6. uponangelwings on February 19, 2021 at 9:34 pm

Armikrog. A video game made in claymotion.

  7. Block Facts on February 19, 2021 at 9:37 pm

11-11: Memories Retold has a really similar style to Dreams

  8. Craig Adams on February 19, 2021 at 9:38 pm

    Fez, Braid, Ori, Bioshock

  9. Nostalgia in 3D on February 19, 2021 at 9:39 pm

A bit of a stretch, but I really like the visual design of Comix Zone. Probably the most literal comic book game.

  10. ゴーストghost on February 19, 2021 at 9:39 pm

*w h y* is hotline miami not on this list

  11. Egbert Aethelbald on February 19, 2021 at 9:42 pm

You were FOOLISH!!! for not including the Zeno Clash games, which are both bonkers along multiple dimensions. Slightly less FOOLISH!!! for not including The Void, although that game is probably even more obscure than the Zeno Clash games (if nothing else because it is insanely difficult and inaccessible). The Music Machine is another fairly obscure one with a jarring art style, made by the guy who made Dusk before anyone knew who he was.

  12. Jolgeable on February 19, 2021 at 9:43 pm

    Another honorable mention: Hollow Knight.

  13. Bassquake on February 19, 2021 at 9:49 pm

Braid is a good one too.

  14. Ryuzaki Taiyou on February 19, 2021 at 9:50 pm

"goodest of bois". Isn’t the doggo from Okami a female?

  15. Damien Noise on February 19, 2021 at 9:50 pm

Just to put a suggestion out there…El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron

  16. Michael Purdy on February 19, 2021 at 9:51 pm

  18. MJP TV on February 19, 2021 at 9:53 pm

Superliminal broke my mind, but I don’t know if that is the art style, or the gameplay, or both. Maybe a good addition for future lists.

  19. dawn cline on February 19, 2021 at 9:54 pm

The unfinished swan is beautiful and has a great story. Cuphead animation is beautiful and nostalgic but I still haven’t finished it.

  20. Ken Okoye on February 19, 2021 at 9:55 pm

Return of the Obra Dinn holds the patent to this entire list

Edit: I posted this comment before I started the video. Boy was I satisfied by the first entry on the list. Well done bois

Second edit: I should have noticed the video tag

  21. D T on February 19, 2021 at 9:55 pm

  22. Adam Mateja on February 19, 2021 at 9:56 pm

Type Rider is a wonderful journey through the history of writing and typography.

  23. Rory Keeson on February 19, 2021 at 9:56 pm

I think Superhot is pretty unique looking

  24. Michael Hillberry on February 19, 2021 at 9:58 pm

  25. Ben Cooper on February 19, 2021 at 9:59 pm

Journey, Wind Waker, XIII, Jet Set Radio, Burly Men at Sea, Thomas Was Alone, and (to a point) Minecraft.

  26. Ameya Mainde on February 19, 2021 at 9:59 pm

    Few other games – Counterspy/ Stick it to the man/ Comix Zone/ Fandango Remastered/ Manual Samuel/ Transistor/ Hotline Miami 1 and 2

  27. Electric Elephant on February 19, 2021 at 10:00 pm

This has to be one of my favourite videogame vids out there. I’ve always been interested in narrative, highly visual games and I know it takes some digging to find them, so kuddos to the TripleJump crew. (that should be a dancing crew name)
Also, pls enter here any games that are different, artsy, explorative, narrative-driven, wacky, insane or whatever else comes to mind that doesn’t roll well in the mainstream.

  28. Jeffrey Heinze Fry on February 19, 2021 at 10:02 pm

Adding to the list, courtesy of the Wii’s lack of power inspiring artistic creativity:
    Mad World
    Kirby’s Epic Yarn
    Lost in Shadow
    Ivy the Kiwi?
Muramasa: The Demon Blade (or Odin Sphere)
    Wario Land: Shake It!

I feel these are all worthy of consideration, although some fit beside other games on the list (Mad World with Limbo, Wario with Cuphead, Ivy the Kiwi with Apotheon)

And if we’re going unique, but don’t require good, lets get some TIS-100 in there.

  29. N P on February 19, 2021 at 10:04 pm

    11-11 is an underrated game.

  30. Crabman Gaming on February 19, 2021 at 10:04 pm

You showed Elijah Wood at 4:04 and then didn’t mention he voiced Harry in 11-11 Memories Retold. 🦀

  31. hazrover on February 19, 2021 at 10:04 pm

Got me very curious about Gorogoa and Elegy for a Dead World now…

  32. Ravi: A Modern Epic on February 19, 2021 at 10:05 pm

Return of the Mack reference 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 10/10

  33. Jonathan Kulesa on February 19, 2021 at 10:06 pm

You are foolish for not including Mad World (Wii) on this list!… ❤

  34. Astraldragon Gaming on February 19, 2021 at 10:06 pm

The are so many other games I love the art style from; FAR Lone sail, Mark of the Ninja, The Shape of Worlds, Manifold Gardens, The Room series, The creature in the well.

  35. uponangelwings on February 19, 2021 at 10:06 pm

So you’ve never played past the first level of Unfinished Swan, huh?

  36. skorpiius on February 19, 2021 at 10:08 pm

What system would allow for playing the highest number of these?

  37. VSLazer on February 19, 2021 at 10:10 pm

I’m came for Cuphead, I was not disappointed.

  38. Mark J on February 19, 2021 at 10:10 pm

Love the art style on Auto Modellista and the Zero Escape Series.

  39. ATARI Duckman on February 19, 2021 at 10:11 pm

SUPER HOT has a pretty unique art style.
Same goes for Antichamber and Q.U.B.E. (1&2).
Outlast with the voxel graphics has a cool style too.
I also like the art style of "The Saboteur",were in the beginning it’s all black, white and red, and only after you liberate parts of Paris, color comes back into the liberated parts of the world.
I hope for a new list with more games with unique art styles. So many games to choose from.
    Keep it coming

  40. tyler fun on February 19, 2021 at 10:12 pm

Breath of the Wild and Spiritfarer are, in my opinion, beautiful examples of cumulative style techniques being applied masterfully in games.

On the opposite side of the coin Hellblade and Naughty dog’s games are beautiful examples of stylized realism that is beautiful in it’s own way.

From Software has created an entire genre of games that is made all the more impactful because of their ability to immerse players in terrifying worlds.

Fun list. I would love to see one focused on interesting/impactful music.

  41. supaultrapimp on February 19, 2021 at 10:12 pm

You guys gotta’ get Jet Set Radio/Grind & Jet Set Radio Future on the next list <3

  43. A S on February 19, 2021 at 10:15 pm

Hollow Knight is one of the most visually striking games I’ve played in a long time.

  44. Anthony Morabith on February 19, 2021 at 10:16 pm

Based on the awards for art and art direction won, I think the original Bioshock should be on here.

  45. Timothy Oswald on February 19, 2021 at 10:17 pm

    Minimalism. 🤯

  46. aipaloovik on February 19, 2021 at 10:18 pm

Never Alone, inspired by my peoples’ culture, the Inuit.

  47. James Kaye on February 19, 2021 at 10:19 pm

I came for valkyria chronicles and was left disappointed

  48. Jack Robinson on February 19, 2021 at 10:20 pm

‘Limbo’ was just ripping off 1991 Amiga slash-em-up ‘Blade Warrior’ though, wasn’t it?

  49. Ameya Mainde on February 19, 2021 at 10:26 pm
