this is so sad…my old computer is not able to let me create proper paintings on 300 dpi with bigger file-sizes adna new one costs more than i can afford by selling my paintings.

  9. Apu Sista on January 16, 2021 at 1:56 am

Wow! Brief yet comprehensive. So I would go with Intel i9 10th Gen, budget permitting. Motherboard? Could you recommend an Asus one? And an AMD Radeon Pro minimum model? Would 5500 be ideal? Your HDD suggestions are deadly too! Thanks much and thanks in advance for your reply!

I’m deciding between two desktop pc’s, one has an i5-10400 and the other has an i3-9100f. Which would be better for intensive Photoshop and Lightroom use? Great video by the way!

Found this and was impressed, was in market for Laptop having had 4 faulty ones from major manfacturers in last 6 weeks, chatted on phone and then used your site to cutomise one.

I work on RAW files produced by Sony A7r2 and A7r4 and I’m confident you need at least 32GB of RAM, but my next setup will have 64GB for sure. When you edit such big files with 10 layers that have luminosity masks then you have at least 10GB file size which occupies 24GB in RAM. So don’t be foolish by "16 GB is enough", no it is not. Next, if you are serious to what you do in PS then you need 10bit video output, no questions. Of course you can work easily with a regular 8bit output but it produces a very annoying artifact like banding on your monitor. The file does not have banding but you see it during editing. If you are on a budget, then you don’t have to have special video card like GeForce or Radeon, an integrated graphics card works way smoother than a cheap professional card. And Photoshop does not utilize heavily Vram, even 2 gigs will work fine.

i9 9900k/ i7 9700k is still the sweet spot cpu for lightroom and photoshop and all around gaming IMHO..with the latest bios updates. i7 9700k is now very cheap like $180!

Hey, I usually use Photoshop for heavy manipulations and Digital art. Lately it’s been lagging and crashing.
    My specs –
    1.5TB HDD
    240GB SSD
    Ryzen 3 1200g
    Nvidia Gtx 1060 3gb
    16gb 3000mhz RAM
    What should i Upgrade?

  19. Peter Pagh on January 16, 2021 at 2:05 am

Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Regarding multiple disks, in in ideal world, wouldn’t i just have one 2 gb pcie 4.0 NMVe drive, and have windows and all scratch disks and project files on that drive? So the PC doesnt have to move things around from drive to drive? Or is this simply not a concern because it has to use the same motherboard bandwith anyways?

Would you recommend anything different for Lightroom Classic as well?

    I understand that:
Single Thread Hi speed is the priority.
Multi Core? / Anything up to 8?

Thank you again and best of luck to you!!

My pc is not powerful to load photoshop or coraldraw.

  42. Fabio Di Bernardi on January 16, 2021 at 2:31 am

I am a digital painter, I use Photoshop solely and exclusively for this. Concept Art and illustrations, working with files in 4k resolution. However, my current CPU is not working. Do you think a ryzen 5 2600 would do the job? Or maybe an R7 2700 … For the low cost. Hugs.

Just perfect! Came here looking for advising my uncle what specs to look for in a photography computer and now I know what I should be looking for. "Diolch yn fawr" from this Welsh man.

  48. ElukkaWarfare on January 16, 2021 at 2:37 am

Ok, so let me correct some things he said. Photoshop does not need a dedicated graphics card unless all you do is use the few features that DO get benefit from a dedicated gpu:

    Camera Raw
    Image Size – Preserve Details
    Select Focus
Blur Gallery – Field Blur, Iris Blur, Tilt-Shift, Path Blur, Spin Blur (OpenCL accelerated)
Smart Sharpen (Noise Reduction – OpenCL accelerated)
    Perspective Warp
    Select and Mask (OpenCL accelerated)
    Scrubby Zoom
    Birds Eye View
    Flick Panning
    Smooth Brush Resizing

I have 50 adobe users at the company I work for and we have switched to on board GPU i7 laptops and nobody has noticed. We used to have ones with nvidia quadros witch is WAY overkill.
Rasterisation of 2d images does not need graphics memory like at all. 3d does.

    Save your money.

i3 9100f with gtx1660. Good enough for learning photoshop and illustrator?

  50. Lars L on January 16, 2021 at 2:39 am

I’m only working in Lightroom :
Is the GTX 1660 super an option or only the TI version? Or will you rather recommend a different card instead?
