Top 10 Greatest Video Games of the 1990's

Top 10 Greatest Video Games of the 1990's

Considered by many to be the greatest decade ever for games, the amount of time it took me to select ten of the best was only surpassed by the amount of time it took me to make this video thanks to Windows Movie Maker’s usual constant crashing.

I wanted to make the list as fair as possible (hence the somewhat rigorous restrictions), so when I chose these ten, it had to be more than just about personal taste. Aside from considering their basic attributes (gameplay, design, etc.), I also thought about critical response, popularity, impact on the industry, and other key factors. Trust me, this wasn’t easy, and yet I’m still leaving you the option of flaming me for not including your favorites =D

Also, I’m well aware that I spelled “Gran” Turismo wrong, so there’s no need to point that out =)

Enjoy, and feel free to comment about anything!

Only one platformer could be chosen, and I went with Super Mario 64 for its innovation and stellar gameplay.

I’m sorry, Metal gear should be second, FPS should be half life, and first should be Resident Evil (aka. the horror genre) But it wasn’t a bad selection.

  10. ZhangtheGreat on April 27, 2021 at 2:01 am

No one will ever agree on what the best RPG was. They were all brilliant in the essential elements (design and gameplay), so I had to look elsewhere to break the tie. In the end, the tiebreaker came down to impact: FF7 took the genre into 3D and it propelled the PlayStation to victory in the 5th generation console war.

    zelda. yes.

  14. ZhangtheGreat on April 27, 2021 at 2:06 am

Unfortunately, that’s all MK had going for it: violence. Break down the game design and you’ll notice that, blood and fatalities aside, it really wasn’t anything special. It had a subpar fighting system, and when MK2 debuted with one of the best fighting systems ever, it only made MK1’s look worse.
Critical reviews prove MK was only about blood: the Genesis version got praised for leaving blood in, but the SNES version was panned despite better controls and gameplay.

I can use the same argument and say the same thing for any genre that was red hot in the 90s:
    – Dune 2 put the RTS on the map, so C&C, Warcraft, Starcraft, etc. were gigantic attractions
    – Wolf3D and DOOM put FPS on the map, leading to great franchises like Duke Nukem, Half-Life, and the game GoldenEye
    – RPGs took off thanks to great titles: Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, a slew of Final Fantasy games, and even Pokemon
Fighters were not the #1 genre. They were one of the many outstanding genres.

No he doesn’t. He just asked me where a game is. If he had a point, he’d’ve made it.

    Nintendo fans suck

  22. ilovelctr on April 27, 2021 at 2:12 am

Lol, glad to see a top-10 list that differs from the vast majority out there. Zelda OOT being the ultimate champion is a no-brainer for me too. But personally I’d place MGS2 higher than the original MGS, because imo the 2nd installment has made a huge improvement on gameplay, whereas the first one is more of a cinematic experience, so basically this is all about personal preferences.

Btw, it’s a fun fact that I found out about you in the comment section of a Sino-Japanese War video, and 我也是中国人,哈哈哈。

You’re STILL going at it? Geez, move on already. You’ve said your piece, you’ve made your point, and you’ve heard mine. What do you want, the whole world to worship your point of view and dismiss all others?

  26. ZhangtheGreat on April 27, 2021 at 2:18 am

Yeah, and so were these ten games. In the end, there were too many awesome games to choose from, and with a list limited to ten, expect plenty of snubs.

  27. goof 1987 on April 27, 2021 at 2:19 am

donkey Kong for the super Nintendo should have been on the list

  28. ZhangtheGreat on April 27, 2021 at 2:21 am

Well there’s your reason why they made the list. If they’re still well-known today, they did something right during their initial release that made us keep going back for more and demanding re-releases.

  29. k.e.y. on April 27, 2021 at 2:21 am

There is SF but not MK.
    _Dislike_

  30. EastCoastLifestyle on April 27, 2021 at 2:22 am

Probably gonna get some shit for this but Goldeneye 64 was better than Doom.

  31. ZhangtheGreat on April 27, 2021 at 2:22 am

You’re pitting an entire genre of games versus two individual games. Obviously, the genre will outsell the individual games. Plus, while sales numbers signify something, they’re never the whole story.
No, SF2’s impact was not bigger than Mario64. SF2 changed one genre that never dominated then as much as the FPS clearly does now. Mario64 changed the how the entire industry designs and develops games.

  32. Jin Kazama on April 27, 2021 at 2:29 am

Those numbers are more then what Mario 64, or OOT has ever even touched upon, in fact its an annihilation. Not to mention SFII was the 3rd highest Selling Arcade of all time, yet again only after Pac-Man and Space Invaders.

You want to talk numbers, impact, relevancy, and what it did to its genre and how it made FG’s dominate the greater half of the 90’s, It’s SFII. It’s impact was Bigger then Mario64 or OOT.

  33. ZhangtheGreat on April 27, 2021 at 2:29 am

Yeah I do: Final Fantasy VII.

  34. MrSpNPap on April 27, 2021 at 2:29 am

    FINAL F @ K I N FANTASY VII

    You forgot TES II Daggerfall

  37. David Nyman on April 27, 2021 at 2:32 am

    The music is unbelievably good!

  38. ZhangtheGreat on April 27, 2021 at 2:34 am

No, fighting games did not dominate the 90s. Fighting was one of the many genres that made 90s games so diverse. That’s why this list is limited to one-per-genre (unlike my Top 20 of the 2000s).
Mario 64 is credited in the industry as the true prototype 3D game. It wasn’t the first, but developers hold it in higher regard than VF.
OoT was the greatest overall game. Gameplay alone was enough to sell it as such.
It’s all right if you’re into fighters, but I think you overemphasize their impact.

  39. BiggRedButton on April 27, 2021 at 2:39 am

To me it looks like their most just first releases of todays most know games. I srsly didnt play any game on this list other then doom.

  40. Infrared Toa on April 27, 2021 at 2:40 am

5 must be smash bros and not that game

  41. ZhangtheGreat on April 27, 2021 at 2:40 am

Like I said, the lines separating the games were razor thin. You can argue in different, justifiable ways for any of these games to be higher or lower.
I will disagree with your claims that the top 3 didn’t shift the landscape the way SF2 did. Mario 64 shifted the industry into the 3D era, DOOM launched the popularity of the FPS (arguably the #1 genre today), and OoT showed us how to design a well-polished, open-world, 3D game with amazingly executed gameplay variety.

  42. ZhangtheGreat on April 27, 2021 at 2:41 am

Nope. I cut it. With so many outstanding RPGs and only room for one, expect plenty of snubs.

  43. Alterra Studios on April 27, 2021 at 2:41 am

    Half life anyone?

  44. Infrared Toa on April 27, 2021 at 2:43 am

Gran turismo and no mario kart 64?,nope,thats not how that works

  45. Daniel on April 27, 2021 at 2:44 am

what about the neverhood it is one of the awesome games

  46. ZhangtheGreat on April 27, 2021 at 2:46 am

No, you’re just choosing to ignore what I’ve said. I’ve made my point crystal clear in all my responses to you. If you want to outright dismiss it because you feel everyone should subscribe to yours, that’s an issue for you to deal with. I think I’ve been tolerant enough of your "my way or the highway" comments.

  47. ZhangtheGreat on April 27, 2021 at 2:46 am

That’s a good argument. If this list were weighed on impact alone, it would probably be ranked higher. However, other factors count too, and thus, SF2’s #5 position is justifiable.
The lines separating the positioning of these games is razor thin in many cases, so several of them could easily have been one or two positions higher/lower.

  48. G O D on April 27, 2021 at 2:50 am

    Doom at #2?

    You’re Goddamn right.
