This Is Poland: From communism to video game wellspring

This Is Poland: From communism to video game wellspring

Six longform written features. Two video documentaries. Three of Poland’s largest cities and nearly two dozen developers. Polygon Goes To Poland.

This Is Poland: With hit titles like Dead Island, The Witcher, Dying Light, and Gears of War: Judgment, Poland is a wellspring of video game entertainment. But how did a former communist country get that way? Polygon took a trip to Poland to find out.

Poland was the biggest and one of most powerful countries in Europe during XIV, XV, XVI and XVII ages
Russian Empire? – Poland captured Moscow twice…
Austrian Empire? – Poland saved Vienna twice against Ottoman Empire…
German Empire? – Poland kicked Germany from East Europe in XV century for ages
Part of this movie regarding polish history (everything what I saw) was made by idiot and ignorant,

I emigrated to Germany from Poland, about 6 years ago. Through that I was able to build a great (imo) gaming collection, spend an awful lot of time in bars and pubs and meet a lot of people from all around the globe. At the company in which I’m working, there are over 70 different nationalities present. Oh, and not to mention playing in a hard rock band for over 4 years. Those things would never happen to me if I stayed, and I didn’t belong to a poor family.

Painkiller, Bulletstorm, Gears of War: Judgement, Call of Juarez, Dead Island, Chrome, Earth, The Witcher, Hard Reset, Two Worlds, Shadow Warrior (remake), Sniper: Ghost Warrior… Yeah, quite a long list for such a small country in central Europe. And it’s not all.

It’s a nice movie about Poland. A little differently, however, sees this place a young Polish citizen. Many emigrate. Emigrating, young Poles much more liked by the movie about poland as an example of the 51 U.S. A. state ub missing parts of the British Kingdom. And even if it is not the whole truth is surely somewhere near the truth. 🙂

  18. Endek on October 17, 2020 at 4:40 pm

Chmielarz’s version of 1989 transformation is laughable, that’s the official fairytale for the braindead

  19. strelok1988 on October 17, 2020 at 4:40 pm

Yeah video its about games but if u want to know geopolitical truth, after USSR collapse there was no power given to the people. Local high rank soviet agents who stay in country begin to build economic net that fit in to new reality of open market with them as puppet master, they burn all intel docs and put on tie as new free-world businessman. Old national industries are taken and sell to outside corps, they begin to have money, power, grow the corruption, some of them start political carrier and control government and law. This net is holding Poland up to modern days, and its not only Poland, lots of post-soviet countries have the same problem. This video real piss me off by showing fake market image, if u don’t believe come and try to run business.  Any way i hope that Wither will be epic game, and all of u will enjoy it.

  31. Czerwona Roza on October 17, 2020 at 4:54 pm

If Poland is so beautiful place to live, so why milions of Poles are leaving their country and put down roots on the west? Poland is ruled by powerfull political and buisness group of people, who grab whole post communism property for a few symbolic dolars, all factories, everything has been sold to the "party friends" from the earlier system for the buck. People losed their jobs, goverment is taking credits from the bank for the bilions dolars borrow people more and more and created totally different political system than from the west. Poland didnt have ANY survey to clean this country from communists in the goverment, courts, prosecution in the security agencies and other offices. You really don`t want to live in this country, nobody want, there are no place for people, who just want to live worthily. Thats all about my "beatiful" country.

  32. Jagielski Gaming on October 17, 2020 at 4:55 pm

Also guess why Polish games are polished? It’s in our nationality – we either do something perfectly or not at all. The only exception is our ball-less government who can’t say to US: either we get no-visa traffic to us, or you’ll have to go through extremely complicated visa process with low success ratio.

    Who watch this in 2077?

  34. 86Corvus on October 17, 2020 at 5:00 pm

Correction, from socialism , not communism. Russia had communism. It was way worse, compared to the wretched socialism.

    Mr.Chmielarz and his socks…

  36. Yagi on October 17, 2020 at 5:03 pm

Witcher was not the first nor first good Polish game, it hasn’t started anything. We had the Earth series, Painkiller, Polanie and some others. The CDP’s history of gamemaking is actually only about 20% of their whole history.

Foreigners like to think that Polish games equal quality, but that really only applies to the Witcher series. Techland is churning out their zombie rehashed games, People Can Fly was bought and raped by EA, only the new Call of Juarez: Gunslinger represented some quality (after the previous game was absolutely awful).

Also, government helping small companies, I lol’d.

If any of you honorable YouTubers desires to become just this little bit more acquainted with Poland – have a look at my humble channel. I’d be more than happy if you did that!

  41. Yes No on October 17, 2020 at 5:10 pm

Sure CD Project RED and other developers are awesome but credit goes to them and them ONLY.

Don’t listen to Obama’s bullshit. It’s just a pile of diplomatic bullshit. Here in Poland the government does nothing to support new business. People are on their own. Taxes are high and at the top of that we just had our retirement age rised. It’s not that sweet.

This should be named "Video game industry in Poland" or "Gaming in Poland". I expected something about history and society of Poland and what actually people out there know about it. Good job though, I enjoyed it.

  48. tomasz markowicz on October 17, 2020 at 5:17 pm

  49. GarlicPudding on October 17, 2020 at 5:17 pm

A bit short, but still a facinating subject. And the Polish President (or was it Prime Minister?) giving "Big O" a game makes me smile…maybe the world world would be a better place if our heads of state got together for a gaming session once in a while.
