The Best Memory for AMD Ryzen – A Beginner's Guide to RAM Performance

The Best Memory for AMD Ryzen – A Beginner's Guide to RAM Performance

The AMD Ryzen 5000 series might facing availability shortages but that’s bound to change soon. In this Ryzen memory buying guide for beginners we cover memory performance for dual rank vs single rank, the best speed and how to buy with memory latency in mind along with plenty of RAM benchmarks to help through the process. All of this should lead to picking the best memory for Ryzen 5 5600X, Ryzen 7 5800X, Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 9 5950X but it will also help with the Ryzen 3000 series too.

When I was watching "Guardians of the Galaxy" and first saw Star-Lord, the first thing that came to my mind:
"Hell, I have seen this guy somewhere else before, and it’s outside of MCU…where was that?!"
Took me several weeks before that "aww" moment came to me…

wonder why 95% of "ram for ryzen 5000" reviews never show 3800hz always only 3200 and 3600

  3. Timm Spinn on April 30, 2021 at 3:16 am

Hey guys, need some help on this exact subject. New build with a Ryzen 9 3900XT, ASRock X570 Taichi mobo, and Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 MHz RAM – 2 x 16 GB. The system is stable if I leave the RAM setting on 2133 (Auto) or manually set it to 2667. But if I set it to 3200 or use the XMP profile that pops up (exactly matching the Corsair’s specs), it’s BSOD or total system shutdown after just a minute or two in Windows. Yes, that RAM is on the supported list on the ASRock site, and I have the two modules installed in the A2 & B2 slots per the manual. What am I doing wrong here? Other than the timing settings that the XMP profile sets, is there something else I need to change? Or should I just get different RAM? And go with 3600 MHz? Appreciate any help you can give.

    I think I’ll stick with my 3950x… it works great with my G. Skill 16GB’sx4 64GB 3600mhz memory…

  5. whitebuffulo on April 30, 2021 at 3:19 am

So as long as I get 3600 cl16 duel rank and I should be right yes? Got my cpu 5900x and snagged a 3080 in the mythical forest, it’s this last piece to the puzzle I am having difficulty with though.

  6. DeathMetroll on April 30, 2021 at 3:19 am

Hi, I’m planning to go for a new build with a 5800x, Gigabyte AORUS x570 Master, question is which is bestn 2x8GB of 3600mhz C16 or 3800mhz c14 ? Thank you very much. Regards.

  9. Shiro on April 30, 2021 at 3:23 am

I know you sort of mention it, but Isn’t it a serious error in your testing methodology that your 1x 8GB single rank stick isn’t a 16GB single rank stick? As for memory intesive tests, which most of them are, most of the difference you’ll be seeing will be because of that extra 8GBs? And despite shortly mentioning it, most peoples perception will be that the tests with huge margins are indictive of actual real world differences. (Not sure if 16GB single rank sticks even exist but nonetheless)

Also you didn’t test 4x dual rank.

As a memory noob, this video was great to go through. If you could do a video about the tools you used to tune your memory and frequency, I’d love to see it. I plan to get a 5900x and X570 Master so it’d be perfect for me.

More videos like this!! And this translates to laptops as well? For example, the Acer Swift 3 with Ryzen 7 4700 with 8gb of ram on dual channel. Would that laptop beat my old Intel i7 – 2670QM CPU and 12GB of RAM? It’s been tricky to compare older CPU’s with an extra RAM. How can we measure performance based on GPU AND RAM? That would be an interesting topic for a video

Wait this other video I just watched lead me to believe that 4x8gigs single rank was better than 1x32gig dual

  18. David Xavier on April 30, 2021 at 3:31 am

One unanswered question is if all 4 dimms are loaded with dual rank (8 ranks total) is there a performance gain their, or is it a loss similar to the 4x8GB-4 rank

  20. tigerpjm on April 30, 2021 at 3:34 am

    Hardware Canucks usual excellent content.

    Great stuff!

  21. UnCrunch on April 30, 2021 at 3:38 am

Now if only I could find 2x32GB at 3600C16, or better 4×32 same speed specs, validated by my MB. Now I see why to spend more on other boards. Should pay better attention in the future to those the main CPU manufacturers are helping to develop. But often balancing the budget means getting less than one wants on everything to get something acceptable in all aspects.

  25. timotmon on April 30, 2021 at 3:42 am

Crucial is annoying in that it doesn’t list what rank a certain module might be on their website.. seems like important info to know. I’m sure other vendors are the same as well IDK.

  29. BigMikeGaming on April 30, 2021 at 3:51 am

omg, a good tutorial that doesn’t have loud ass music and i can actually hear what he is talking about, i am learning a lot for my first ever build, currently waitin on parts to be in stock, only have a case right now. Great job m8

  30. Cruizer A219 on April 30, 2021 at 3:52 am

Since all NEW Ballistix 16Gb sticks now seem to be SINGLE RANK, this video has changed from "extremely helpful" to "misleading/confusing." I tried to find exact dual rank sticks, 3600, recommended, but there is no way to tell by shopping whether they are dual or single. Reddit posts suggest most recent purchases seem to be single rank. So, that doesn’t help those that wanted 2 sticks dual rank.

  31. Laurence Lagden on April 30, 2021 at 3:53 am

Great video 👍🏼. Question: does Ryzen master support the 4650g pro. For the life of me I can’t get it to run. I’m on a MSI X470 mobo. (In case that makes a difference)

I’ve bought 2 of those steel series mice that were sponsored in this video (had to return first one it was so bad). Even the one I’m using right now is horrible. The right click on the mouse is very stiff, impossible to play games that require constant right clicking (like mobas or fps’s). Would not recommend it to anyone because of the horrible build quality. Only sticking with it because its the only mouse I own right now sadly.

  35. Jonathon Allegretti on April 30, 2021 at 3:58 am

Would you say this applies to a Ryzen 3400g? I know you mentioned that it applies to the 3000 series but i will be completely dependant on the integrated graphics once my computer arrives. I got a 32GB dual rank kit (16×2) at 3200mghz because for some reason the Tomahawk Max motherboard doesn’t support 3600mghz. This is my first PC build.

  36. Jeffrey Sickels on April 30, 2021 at 3:59 am

About to retire my Ivy Bridge Xeon e3-1240v2 platform(i7 3770 sans gfx). Since I’m looking toward a R5 3600X and know nothing of DDR4 and Infinity Fabric, etc. I found this vid. Speed and proper tuning matter now…and physical configuration! With DDR3 I never bothered to because it was widely believed that returns on overclocking and tuning were minimal, and not worth the effort.
Thank you for sharing that bit of next gen expertise…

  44. Ivan Godinez on April 30, 2021 at 4:08 am

I am having trouble deciding what RAM to get for my R5 5600X system. I am stuck between a 16gb DDR4 dual rank 3600mhz kit or a 16gb DDR4 dual rank 4000mhz kit. Both are from OLOy. Both RAM kits have a cas latency of 18 but I am confused regarding the infinity fabric ratio. Can someone advise me on what would be better. Thanks!

  45. MatteoSteam on April 30, 2021 at 4:08 am

So are the Ballistix 16gbx2 dual rank or not? I can’t find it anywhere. I’m talking about the BL2K16G36C16U4B

  46. Leon on April 30, 2021 at 4:10 am

    should 3200 be enough for a r7 2700x

  47. Omeer Rahman on April 30, 2021 at 4:10 am

So does that mean dual rank and populating all 4 slots will have twice the benefits? Cuz I just pulled the trigger on that. 64GB RAM here I come!

  48. Skunk Realm on April 30, 2021 at 4:10 am

I just bought 2 x 8 GB 4000MHz CL17 RAM for my AMD Athlon 3000G and Asus ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING II.

I think I might have overspend a bit on the RAM, they even have RGB.
