Most Popular Computer Brands 1996 – 2020 (by market share)

Do you remember the first computer?

This video shows the performance of the top computer brands in terms of market share. Apple dropped by a lot in the late 90s, hence why they brought back Steve Jobs. I did not include them with the “others” because they have been very influential to the computer industry. Those that dropped to 0% were either acquired or left the computer market. Computer brands that sold less than 3% are part of the “others” group, those included brands like Sony Vaio, Packard Bell and hundred others. In the 90s computer sales were based on price and performance instead of style since they were seen as a business tool.

I included popular computers from each year so you can see the progression of computer designs and so you can have an idea of what was selling at that time. I did not include many laptop images because it’s difficult to see their progression other than thinner bodies.

    I always try to buy HP, HP was my first computer. I did have an acer at one time. Recently I wanted to buy an HP Chromebook, but they were sold out so I bought a Samsung…I am not a happy camper!

    My first computer was a Compaq. It cost $2500 in 1997. It had the best speakers but damn was that screen heavy. I used it to play Asheron’s Call. I was so addicted to that game. One of the first mmorpg’s.

    Sad Sony Vaio didn’t even join…… Compaq was my 1st laptop 2gb ram , 512 gb hdd,ATI graphic card, core2duo ,window 7 , bought in 2011, it lasted 2016. Believe me I played devil May Cry4 in this laptop without getting any issue.
    Also I bet It was more powerful in performance then from my current dell laptop bought in 2018,currently m having dell Vostro 8gb ram ,1tb hdd ,no graphic card ,i3 7th gen … It feels like I bought cheap box ..slow performance always irritate me in browsing, file explorer, update, reboot you name it. U can’t play single game in it…what a downgraded generation on same budget segment….It feels like oldy
