Best TV of 2020 (Shootout): LG CX vs Pana HZ2000 vs Philips 935 vs Samsung Q90T vs Sony A8

Best TV of 2020 (Shootout): LG CX vs Pana HZ2000 vs Philips 935 vs Samsung Q90T vs Sony A8

We picked the best TV of 2020 in our annual TV shootout where the LG CX, the Panasonic HZ2000, the Philips 935, the Samsung Q90T and the Sony A8 were compared vs a Sony BVM-X300 reference mastering monitor.

All competing TVs were 55 inches in screen size, and were calibrated in SDR and HDR modes to the common standards used within the film and broadcast industry, perceptually matched to the Sony X300.

Eight categories (with more subcategories) were judged, namely blacks & shadow detail, colour accuracy, HDR tone mapping, colour accuracy, video processing, screen uniformity, bright-room performance, as well as gaming.

Many thanks to UK electrical retailer Crampton & Moore for providing the TVs and the venue to make this year’s shootout a reality under extremely challenging circumstances. If you’re interested in getting a new TV, even if it’s not the LG CX, the Panasonic HZ2000, the Philips 935, the Samsung Q90T or the Sony A8, please support this channel by considering buying from them. Call 0113 244 6607, mention HDTVTest, and you’ll receive great price and service.

Thanks to CYP Europe too for loaning an 8-way HDMI splitter and premium HDMI cables for the shootout. Here are the results:

Best Home Cinema TV: Panasonic HZ2000
Best Living Room TV: Sony A8
Best Gaming TV: LG CX
Best TV of 2020: Panasonic HZ2000

  6. Nick Yung on January 6, 2021 at 2:52 am

Am I the only one who is super confused when it comes to DTS support being missing on most of the TV? I wanted to get a Sonos Arc but that also doesn’t support DTS.

On9 搵OLED同埋 QLED 一齊比 個優缺點天生就唔同 一個燒屏已經玩完 色幾靚都唔襟用 你估個個家庭二三年就換電視啊

  8. Frans De Groot on January 6, 2021 at 2:57 am

Samsung is not oled. All the others well. It is not a good test of only oled or no oled.

  9. Monarchist on January 6, 2021 at 2:57 am

No love for the Philips 805?

  10. Anthony on January 6, 2021 at 2:59 am

CX is literally the best all around besides the burnin possible issue.

  11. Jinxx2 on January 6, 2021 at 3:00 am

You’re the coolest man! Thanks so much!

  12. Chris Rios on January 6, 2021 at 3:01 am

A8 ! Isn’t the A9G a better representation of SONY’s oled TVs? Not that it would beet the HZ2000 just thought it’s to be a better panel

  13. Neonmirrorblack on January 6, 2021 at 3:02 am

So glad the Panasonic sets are finally being sold in the US now. Now it’s a choice between the best gaming TVs (LG) and the best looking set with HDR for shows/films (Panasonic). Sony is an automatic loss just because of its UI and contrary naming scheme.

  14. David D. on January 6, 2021 at 3:05 am

This is really disappointing, I thought the CX was the best consumer grade TV on the market. Have one on order as I got a really good deal on it but might cancel it now. Although, the Panasonic can’t actually be bought anywhere and from what I can tell is ridiculously expensive and the A8H lacks HDMI 2.1 which automatically disqualifies it for me. Didn’t realize the A8 had so much better color volume though, really annoying that LG messed this us seeing as it’s the same panel.

  15. Howard Sladen on January 6, 2021 at 3:05 am

Good video but with the Sony A8 nearly £200 more than LG CX, its really hard to see why you’d get a Sony. Unless cx requires a lot of calibration out of box?

  16. GX 13 on January 6, 2021 at 3:07 am

🤣 the tie joke 🤣🤣🤣 had me cracking up

  17. # dragon on January 6, 2021 at 3:11 am

  18. Dave C. on January 6, 2021 at 3:13 am

Great job Vincent, thanks for all your hard work and i will probably purchase the LG CX since I am very interesting in Gaming using my MSI GS65 Stealth notebook!

  19. Edwin1980LWD on January 6, 2021 at 3:13 am

Dear Panasonic, I need 77" inch.

  20. savedfaves on January 6, 2021 at 3:13 am

Regarding best living room TV you should have included ease of use of the on-screen operating system as one part of the rating. Trusted Reviews knocked the Sony A8 for "Android TV isn’t the most user-friendly smart system". For the majority of owners I see this as being a big deal and potentially a deal-breaker for many.

  21. Silk Lion on January 6, 2021 at 3:15 am

This is the weirdest video Ive ever seen.

  22. HVYContent on January 6, 2021 at 3:17 am

That A8 is a silent assassin

  23. Rilind Shabanaj on January 6, 2021 at 3:18 am

    Philips 935 or samsung q8?

  24. SteNo on January 6, 2021 at 3:20 am

    why no Sony XH95?

  25. Asadian Belifont on January 6, 2021 at 3:21 am

All I know is that I got my CX like 2 weeks ago, and I still am shocked how freaking amazing that picture looks in comparison to every other TV I have owned. OLED is really something to behold on a giant screen

  26. Zbigniew Cichowski on January 6, 2021 at 3:22 am

Vincent, I hate you. I just spent the last money for Panasonic 65HZ2000. I hope, I won’t be disappointed…If I am, you’ll get the thumbs down the first time from me.

  27. Chris Gault on January 6, 2021 at 3:23 am

Hopefully get a 2021 Panasonic oled with hdmi 2.1 and over 900 nits. Fingers crossed.

  28. Rob Bird on January 6, 2021 at 3:25 am

I came here because Quantum TV is a jealous hater 😂

  29. David Cupra on January 6, 2021 at 3:25 am

LG BX is up there with the best of them too. It got no mention tho. It and the cx are very close.

  30. nsw72 on January 6, 2021 at 3:26 am

Happy to see that my two top picks for when we went shopping for a new tv were the Panny and the Sony.
Sadly, Panasonic has decided to stop selling their tv line here in Australia However, having bought and lived with the A8 for about 4 months now I can confidently say that the Sony was well worth it’s asking price. 👍

  31. Bob Tahoma on January 6, 2021 at 3:26 am

Are the full results available anywhere? I can’t justify over £2k on a TV so would like to see how the others compare relatively on price.

  32. Red5StandingBy on January 6, 2021 at 3:27 am

How is the "best tv of 2020" something you can’t even buy?

  33. Brian Luzny on January 6, 2021 at 3:27 am

Hi, you mentioned that the Sony A8 is the best Living Room TV for sports, partly because of its motion interpolation and BFI. I’m very new at configuring so could you please provide what settings you used for those? Motionflow, Smoothness, Cinemotion etc. I know to turn these off for Netflix HD content but I really want it optimal for hockey and other sports. Thanks so much if you can help me.

  34. Albert Manzo on January 6, 2021 at 3:28 am

Vincent, David, Excellent work on this show of OLED TV shootout Review!! When will an 8k TV shoot out happen? We all want to see this for buying? Overall fantastic!

  35. Ben Dynamics on January 6, 2021 at 3:28 am

Excellent comparison and perfect for me at this time 👌💯👀😎🌟🎉

  36. John Dude on January 6, 2021 at 3:31 am

I’m sure you could tell which tv was which while the sets were being calibrated 😏. But i don’t doubt your final results.

  37. Bo Robin Larsen on January 6, 2021 at 3:32 am

Does hz2000 have dolby atmos passthrough ? I Got a Sonos arc and sub

  42. Mikael Fredriksson on January 6, 2021 at 3:38 am

Got the q90t 55". Fantastic tv! Using a 2080ti PC with my ps5.

  43. Cryer24597 on January 6, 2021 at 3:38 am

Let’s be honest, if price was included as one of the factors then the CX would win this. The HZ2000 costs £1000 more than the CX. I can’t see how you can justify the minimal improvements in quality costing £1000.

  44. Jaber Tagi on January 6, 2021 at 3:39 am

    Silly sense of humor

  45. Richard Chris on January 6, 2021 at 3:39 am

Love this guys dead pan humour 😂

  50. Nvidia Shieldtv on January 6, 2021 at 3:44 am

As always 100% given in your vids. But I have to ask. Why are you using the Oppo as your reference blu-ray player for this test when the Panasonic DP UB9000 (mine) is clearly a better reference player?
