Top 5 Everyday Desktop Linux Distros | 2020 Edition!

Top 5 Everyday Desktop Linux Distros | 2020 Edition!

Here is my magnum opus of 2020 and my topmost requested video – my list of Linux distros that I recommend for everybody.

Obviously, my preference for Linux distros is on the desktop side of things so if you were expecting to see some super technical “hacker” type distros, you will be disappointed! I much prefer my Linux distro to just work and perform its best right out of the box rather than having to tinker and configure it just to do basic things.

Besides, the vast majority of other Linux YouTubers out there are recommending distros like Fedora and Arch so this video is for grounded people who just want a distro that works.

"Ubuntu ma-té" lol. It’s mate. Rhymes with gate

  2. Jared May on February 18, 2021 at 10:04 pm

    KDE gang unite

  3. Adrian Wolff on February 18, 2021 at 10:05 pm

I will use pop os only if they change the name.

  4. DestherCZE on February 18, 2021 at 10:06 pm

KDE Neon is great. I tried default Gnome Ubuntu and PopOS, but didn’t really like the UI.

  5. Abdh on February 18, 2021 at 10:07 pm

    You should say Manjaro first

  6. Mochamad Rezzafri on February 18, 2021 at 10:08 pm

love the ending, you should do it more often

  7. Jeffrey Ocaya on February 18, 2021 at 10:09 pm

I’m a Peppermint user who has gone through Ubuntu, Mint, Manjaro and MX. You should try Peppermint, it’s also a simple and yet extremely useful out of the box.

KDE Neon is the best — Also I like Q4OS and trinity desktop for old computers (and yes that is also KDE version 3)

  9. Trenton on February 18, 2021 at 10:13 pm

I’ve been using ZorinOS for over 2 years and it is my fav so far. Uses only 300MB of RAM on idle, a windows-like desktop, and easy to customize.

  10. plazma on February 18, 2021 at 10:13 pm

    try arco 🙂

  11. Qushy Qushy on February 18, 2021 at 10:14 pm

So much Ubuntu bloat. Manjaro is the best one out there for noobs just because you can install anything you want via GUI. Fight me.

  12. John Young on February 18, 2021 at 10:15 pm

    What???? Only Ubuntu based Distros????

  13. Will Njundong on February 18, 2021 at 10:16 pm

Did he just pronounce Ubuntu Mate as Ubuntu Maté? There’s no accent on the e; why?

  14. Smiley PB on February 18, 2021 at 10:18 pm

"Because intros suck." Especially when people are 3-5 minutes into their video then put up their intro. At that point you wonder why they even have an intro.

I am running the latest pop os on my 12 year old desktop computers that have 4 GB of RAM. Pop os runs fast on all of them. I was surprised as heck AND I never thought I would say this. Pop is is excellent and I’m starting to enjoy the interface. I have the tiling option on all the time. So far it works fine! 😀

  16. changelog on February 18, 2021 at 10:21 pm

    I love Fedora and Manjaro

You were doing great until you mentioned that 15GB dumpster fire Endless.

Nice vid, though I’d recommend putting a title before each segment
    Thanks

  24. Phat Meow on February 18, 2021 at 10:26 pm

i know most suggest debian based distros for newbies but when i first explored linux i loved manjaro (dumbed down arch) and gecko linux (dumbed down opensuse) and have machines running both ^^

  25. Amit Sarkar on February 18, 2021 at 10:26 pm

I have a perfect Distro suggestion for you to review , its based on Ubuntu, Called
    LinuxFx 10 / Windowsfx OS

This is a Brazilian Distro thats a total clone of Windows 10.
It also has Cortona working and out of the box support for .exe files.

Check this link out : https://windowsfx.org/

  26. Egee on February 18, 2021 at 10:27 pm

I ran into some glitches while making this video but I managed to cover 5 distros in less than 5 minutes! That’s gotta be a record, right? Also, the video from the intro can be seen here – it’s a coding video! – https://youtu.be/88DS3Z8nOdY

  27. Roberts Karimovs on February 18, 2021 at 10:28 pm

Linux Mint is the top of the top for average user, and the most stable.

  28. Fubar AlAkbar on February 18, 2021 at 10:29 pm

I despise Elementary and will never use it again. Missing the most basic apps, windows are clunky to handle even for a Gnome 3-based DE, and wireless performance sucks.
I did rather like Pop OS, and have given some thought to using it again. It’s a bit clunky, but very fast, and the app grid is slick and very simple.
My girlfriend (at the time) used KDE Neon for a while and seemed to like it. Never used it myself and don’t know much about it.
But my home for many years has been with Kubuntu. Reasonably fast and boringly reliable. Love it to death 😀

  29. Ashwin Nanda on February 18, 2021 at 10:31 pm

Well I use Debian with KDE and that’s much much fine for me.

  30. TJ Wolf on February 18, 2021 at 10:31 pm

I really loved this video! Nice Moved on to different distro didn’t stay on to long Awesome! How did you get yours to say LIKE or DISLIKE not show how many?

  31. Shriker Vangmey Vaddadi on February 18, 2021 at 10:31 pm

What was the name of the third os on the list?

  32. Julio Oliveira on February 18, 2021 at 10:32 pm

Is that KDE neon something new? Cause KDE was a window manager just like gnome. And thise effects look like compiz.

  33. Rajat Pandita on February 18, 2021 at 10:32 pm

    Neon for me! Thanks

  34. Florin on February 18, 2021 at 10:33 pm

Best distros for beginners are :
    1 Mint XFCE
    2 Mint Cinamon
    3 Ubuntu
    4 Ubuntu Mate
    5 MX Linux
What the heck KDE Neon? This is a showcase for the KDE developers, the only full KDE distro, install it if you want latest KDE on a stable base.
It’s important to choose a regular release instead of a rolling release

  35. Leron Tolmachev on February 18, 2021 at 10:35 pm

Was Solus considered for the list?

  36. Nerrufam on February 18, 2021 at 10:35 pm

Not mentioning manjaro is a sin.

  37. Godot on February 18, 2021 at 10:36 pm

Geez Louise, enough already with the defaults

  38. Adam on February 18, 2021 at 10:37 pm

PopOs is amazing gnome is kinda meh but its Linux so u can install any DE you want PopOs even has instructions to do so at: https://support.system76.com/articles/desktop-environment/ . PopOs with KDE Plasma is perfect for me 🙂

  39. Victor Rueda on February 18, 2021 at 10:40 pm

Sweet, clean and straight to the point. Very helpful. Thank you.

  40. Sonu Lohani on February 18, 2021 at 10:43 pm

    No manjaro 😠😠😠

  41. ADITYA CHUADHRY on February 18, 2021 at 10:43 pm

No mint for daily driver distro? Awesome defaults, unparalleled stability and probably the best mix between a modern desktop environment while still managing to not eat up all your resources

  42. Jerome A. Grossman on February 18, 2021 at 10:43 pm

Zorin OS is the only one that comes close to operating well on my 2-in-1–especially in tablet mode

  43. Kaeside Iwuagwu on February 18, 2021 at 10:43 pm

I think the best way to answer what Linux distro is great for everyday use is to ask which distro out of the box would you feel most comfortable giving to your parents (granted that they are not tech savvy or if they call you for all tech issues). The distros app store needs to have all the common apps they use or it should be easy for them to go to an app’s website and download and install the app that they need. To me that seems to be Debian based distros.

I’d say pop or elementary are top because they come with Eddy.

Hey Mom or Dad go to this website. Click download. Click on deb. Then open the file. Then click install.

Easier than guiding them through the terminal or installing a gui for the AUR and guiding them to select the proper repo. Sometimes there’s multiple repos for an app you’re trying to install that solves some problems in one whereas the other hasn’t caught up yet.

Personally I love the AUR but guiding someone that is not tech savvy through it would be a nightmare imo

    oo ban tu ma htay?

  45. Emmo Hernández on February 18, 2021 at 10:47 pm

Is Elementary really faster and more lightweight? I was kinda avoiding it because I thought exactly the opposite, guess I was wrong.

  46. Zoltán Somogyi on February 18, 2021 at 10:50 pm

Only the Hungarian blackPanther OS is missing from the list 😉 ( https://www.blackpantheros.eu )

  47. nico. on February 18, 2021 at 10:52 pm

btw i use arch with the zen kernel and kde plasma

  48. Ritam Chakraborty on February 18, 2021 at 10:54 pm

I switched to elementary from kde yesterday, and was in a dilemma about if that war a good decision or not, unless I watch this video.

  49. Tech Ring on February 18, 2021 at 10:54 pm

    What about Zorin os ?

  50. Nathan Hatch on February 18, 2021 at 11:01 pm

Real question: What is wrong with the Pop OS name?
