The rule for my extended family is kids only get cell phones in the final years of high school. I don;t have kids but my sister & cousins have followed this. We even discussed this as a group. When they turn 17 or 18 and go away for college its a really good gift to get them. My sis & bro-in-law bought phones for their two oldest boys who are now in their early 20s so when my niece turns 17, I will buy her one.

My kids get a cell phone as a grade 8 graduation present. And that makes me a not cool mom as kids have phone now days at 8 or 9 years old. Their phone is also the base model $120. Cheapest one I get. I will also only 1 phone for them!! They break it – they pay for it.

I also make my kids pay for most of their own phone bill. For grade 9 they have to pay $20 a month. Grade 10 they have to pay $25 a month. Grade 11 they pay $30 a month. (They get the basic koodo plan. $30 for text, unlimited calling after 5 and only 100mb of data that usually gets used up in 20minutes of scrolling). We have no wifi available for them either. (Crappy internet at home). They just learn to live without it.

Another thing I make my kids do is they have to pay for their phone a year at a time. So every July they owe me a year worth of phone bill. I am not going to go after them every month looking for money. They need to plan and save.

Also I make them sign a contact before they get a phone. With rules that are required to follow to keep your phone. (Attend school, no skipping, not getting in trouble, and no phone during school hours (and yes I check the phone bill for times their phone is used) they also have to turn in their phone every night at a set time (1 hour before bed). Their phone goes in my room for the night where I have a charging station for their phone. Once they get home they are not allowed on phone until chores is done. They also not allowed to be glued to their phone. They will be told to put it away if on too much.

My oldest has been great. He did lose the right to take his phone to school for 4 months in grade 9 and 2 months in grade 10. But he just finished grade 11 and have had no issues with school and phone for over a year and half.

Twin A – never wanted a cell phone. So that had worked out.

Twin B – had his phone from July – October. Then he lost it and had not been able to turn his behaviour around so I disconnected his phone in January. Probably won’t be getting it back anytime soon.

I know this wasn’t a kids and cell phone vlog. But some.of things I do regarding phones.

I also asked my boss for a cell phone allowance. And she agreed and I now get $50 a month (my plan comes to $51 a month). I was only hoping to get $20 a month. But it never hurts to ask. To that is a great tip!!!

Great tips Jenn! Have you ever heard of Public Mobile? My husband and I both have plans through them and they’ve been amazing! They have a $15/ month plan that gives you unlimited talk and text plus 250 MB of data. You also save an additional $2/ month if you set up auto-pay. So between my husband and I we pay less than $30 a month! The only "catch" is that you have to bring your own phone and everything is done online so there is no call center. It has never been a problem for us though, they are super fast to reply with their online chat! The company is actually owned by Telus and they use Telus networks so they have great coverage. Ok, I’ll leave it there because this is starting to sound like a sales pitch. Haha! Thanks for another great video!

You really don’t need data ☺️ we can get data for free almost everywhere! When I see how much they charge for data it makes me know I don’t need it!!!
