Vaio SX12 Review (2020)

Vaio SX12 Review (2020)

Lisa Gade reviews the 2020 edition of the Vaio SX12, one of the lightest and slimmest 12.5” Ultrabooks on the market. The laptop has the 10th gen Intel Comet Lake 6-core i7 CPU. Despite its small size, it has myriad ports, including 3 USB-A, USB-C, Ethernet, HDMI and even VGA. The casing is made of unidirectional carbon fiber and there are full HD and 4K matte IPS display options. There’s also a 14” SX14 model for those who prefer a larger laptop.

    1) Isn’t Vaio dead yet? Really? Why?
    2) 4K on a 12 inch display!?!?!?!? Is there a way that we can report these devices like we can report videos?
How is it not cheating giving 4K displays giving crappy 30Wh cells and sub-par color gamuts? (It has a lower accuracy than my Nitro 5!)

Apple just copied them and patented this design and knowing steve jobs loved sony Vaio laptops in the 2000s i can tell they just site this design like they did htc phone m7 after the iPhone 5 everyone copied htc antenna banding and unibody design

It’s strange that Vaio isn’t controlled by Sony anymore, but the Vaio team seems to have copied Sony’s Xperia strategy anyway: build a nice product, but then don’t let anyone know it’s there. Then, for those who do find it, charge a premium. I suppose those who hunt for a Vaio these days are self-selected for being willing to pay more, but I’m still not sure this is sustainable.

  24. Kevin Garvey on January 11, 2022 at 4:03 pm

Having raised a bunch of kids through to college level I have had a lot of laptops go through our house. The Sony VAIO is extraordinarily resilient – evidently immortal [so far] – outlasting every brand you can name. If the present product imitates the past, the future is good! Lisa – thanks again to you as well, for being the best at what you do.

They could put this settings into the BIOS instead, not to make it dependent on the pre-installed operating system…

  26. Heyguys Guys on January 11, 2022 at 4:04 pm

I still use my 2012 Sony Vaio with i3 2nd gen and 1gb Radeon graphics Card and 4gb ram. Other laptops launched on 2012 is dead… I have never seen a laptop come this far.

Ps: Sony Vaio lasted more than my relationship

  34. Benlee Benlee on January 11, 2022 at 4:16 pm

Good and accurate review thanks. I had 2 previous Sony Vaio, last one had 100 GB on the C drive, was full and slowing it down. Upgraded to the SX11 recently, with 237GB storage. Great little machine, BUT wished I had paid more attention to Lisa comments at around 6.03. The speakers are HORRIBLE, esp. compared to both my old Sony Viao. Even with an external speaker attached, doesn’t seem to really improve them. Very disappointed about that as I listen to music all day at work and cant use a headset.

  35. lopwidth on January 11, 2022 at 4:16 pm

FullHD on 12" ? No thanks, 1366×768 is small enough already and really needs a 13-14". Its so hard to find a laptop with a small enough resolution and not a complete entry level with emmc. I’d love a pentium silver with hdd and 13-14" HDready VA or good calibrated TN. How is ips in terms of input lag these days? They were unbearable couple of years back

I have this. It’s perfect except for one thing – the palm rests are unbelievable fingerprint/smudge magnets.

  40. maxdeniel on January 11, 2022 at 4:19 pm

I haven’t seen this laptop on best buy, is it only available on the VAIO website?

  41. S hussein on January 11, 2022 at 4:19 pm

Is SX12 or SX14 are good for adobe illustrator or adobe photoshop????

  42. Ricardo Martinez on January 11, 2022 at 4:22 pm

Sony VAIO was the only reason I got excited about laptops. Now the new trend is pathetic.

Watching this video from my 2010 Sony Vaio C series. Till now not a single issue. Battery lasts after 8.5 years. One of my best in my life

  46. Marc Raskinski on January 11, 2022 at 4:26 pm

    Greetings,

Just to verify, the memory chip is soldered and there is NOT an upgrade slot? So, you get what you get and that it? 8GB is fine, however, down the road, for those who keep their laptops, it may not be suffice and as a result, one may want to foot the $$ for the model with 16GB.

  47. Thomas Kinkade on January 11, 2022 at 4:27 pm

It sucks that they don’t offer LTE in the US.
